Parents of children at a primary school have been banned from taking pictures of their own children at the annual sports day.

Mrs Ethelston's Church of England Primary School, in Uplyme, Devon, prohibited photos and video filming, claiming it was due to changes in child protection and images legislation.

I saw a TV demo of this machine long ago but for some reason it has become almost impossible to find information on this Japanese invention.

Is it possible to create a sonic washing machine which cleans the laundry by bombarding it with soundwaves? It would be similar to the machines used in hospitals which use soundwaves to break up kidney stones. The sound waves would break down grease and dirt and leave the laundry clean and fresh without the need for water or detergents.

After 30 years of trying, scientists create first-ever acoustic black hole

Stephen Hawking once theorized that black holes would emit a stream of electromagnetic radiation named, what else, Hawking Radiation. However, in the 35 years since Hawking made his prediction, no one has observed the phenomena. Now, a team of Israeli scientists are working on a way to make their own Hawking Radiation by creating an artificial black hole in their lab.

As reported in a recent paper on the physics website arxiv.org, the scientists simulated the black hole by sending sonic waves through a form of matter called Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). BEC is a gas the exists only at the freezing temperatures near absolute zero, and the same equations that explain how sound moves through the condensate also describe how gravity effects light.

And while researchers have yet to observe any Hawking Radiation, they are clearly well on their way. Using sound to create a black hole? Chris Cornell would be proud.

Washing machine uses just one cup of water

An eco-friendly washing machine, which uses just one cup of water to wash a normal sized load of clothes, has been revealed.

The machine, which could go on sale as early as next year, was developed by boffins from Leeds University.

It replaces most of the water with reusable nylon polymer beads which attract and absorb dirt, cleaning clothes in the process.

Experts say this leaves clothes just as clean, but uses over 90 percent less water and 30 percent less energy.

Finally the breakthrough means that smelly hippies won't have an excuse not to wash their clothes.

Inventor Professor Stephen Burkinshaw said: "Nylon polymers have an inherent polarity that attract stains. Picture how white nylon garments can get dingy over time as dirt builds up on the surface despite repeated washing."

"Dirt is not just attracted to the surface, it is locked into the center. This is exactly what happens when Xeros nylon beads are gently tumbled with dampened garments."

THE Vatican seldom approves of scientists meddling with God's creation. So the decision of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences to back oft-demonised genetically modified crops as an answer to world hunger and poverty may come as a surprise.

GM crops were heartily endorsed at a week-long seminar held by the academy in mid-May. Participants agreed that the crops offer food safety and security, better health and environmental sustainability. That verdict is not shared by the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development, a global UN-backed think tank that last year rejected GM as a solution to hunger.

Some say the seminar excluded dissenters within the church who fear that GM technology allows multinationals to control agriculture at the expense of the poor.

A 16-year-old will continue to be held without bail in Indiana, despite his mother’s attempt to demand his release through habeas corpus.

Annette Lundeby filed a 14-page brief in federal court acknowledging her claim that her son was with her in church at the time of the February 15 telephone call that summoned a bomb squad and evacuated the Mechanical Engineering building at Purdue. Lundeby moved from North Carolina to Indiana to personally fight for her child’s freedom. She has even challenged the authority of her son’s prosecutor to represent the United States.

The case is sealed because Lundeby’s son is a minor. The judge dismissed her petition on Wednesday. The lawyer representing her son sought a pre-trial for the case that was denied and has yet to appeal the loss.

Quite honestly, my social media attention is primarily allocated to Clipmarks and Amplify because these two sites provide the type of experience i'm looking for - the abilty to understand the world better by seeing it through other people's eyes. I genuinely believe i am a smarter, more well rounded person because i've had the opportunity to see what other people are reading and what they have to say about it.

clipper's remarks: Clipped from an interesting article that illustrates the one vulnerability of Google - that people may some day not need it to find what they're looking for. I myself rarely use Google to find things. Between social media sites, RSS readers, news aggregators and ecommerce sites, it's rare that i need Google to help me find what i'm looking for.

Honestly find it surprising that their stats are still so strong...but i suppose it would not shock me if someday we look back on search and think of it as being so web 1.0. That said, even if Google Search ultimately slows down, they are well positioned to be the advertising partner for whoever/whatever takes their place.

Pirate Party wins seat at EU Parliament

A political party which is made up of pirates is to set sail for Brussels after winning a seat at the EU Parliament.

But fans of swashbuckling sea-goers could be sorely disappointed, the party is focused on the reformation of copyright law.

The Pirate Party (PiratPartiet) was set up in Sweden in 2006 to compete in domestic and European elections and yesterday gained 7.1 percent of the vote in EU elections winning them a seat in the European Parliament.

From there they will continue to fight for the abolition of the patent system and to strengthen the rights to privacy online.

A spokesperson for the party said: "The Pirate Party wants to fundamentally reform copyright law, get rid of the patent system, and ensure that citizens' rights to privacy are respected.

"Not only do we think these are worthwhile goals. We also believe they are realistically achievable on a European basis."
