The Pitch: "Coffeehouses have always leaned to the left. We give conservatives a place to feel comfortable and rally around their values. We have got TVs tuned to Fox News. Our four blends are Liberal, Moderate, Conservative, and Radical Right. Conservative is our top seller, but Liberal, a decaf blend, is popular, too. We serve food and sell T-shirts with slogans like 'Peace Through Superior Firepower.' We are looking to raise capital to begin franchising and bring on an experienced partner. We have received more than 50 requests from prospective franchisees. We would like to start with four stores in 2009, then open 10 more in 2010."

There are images that break your heart. The news is filled with them today and they can easily sway you to think that all of the situation in the Middle East comes down to a picture. How horrible, truly tragic, unacceptable and wrong it is to have a child die.

1. Palestinians decided to use the United Nations school as a launching base to attack innocent civilians. This wasn't the first time they had used the school. Months ago, Israel filed a formal complaint to the United Nations. Clearly, nothing was done to stop this abuse and so we come to reason # 2.

Digging Conservatism: Some of the digs against Digg, the community-ranking site, is that it's biased against women and weighted in favor of liberals. On the latter, enter #diggcons, an effort under the banner of the conservative #dontgo movement that aims to aggregate the weight of the right-leaning to promote their preferred content on not only Digg, but StumbleUpon as well. Twitter messages marked with the diggcons hashtag will sound the alarm on stories that could use a thumbs up. Will even the amassed voting power of online conservatives be enough to lift conservative content out of the ever-churning cauldron of Digg content? We'll see. But along with Top Conservatives on Twitter, it's another smart attempt to conquer social media from the right -- efforts largely unmatched on the left.

I don't know what if anything will come of this, but it's fascinating -- beginning at about 10:30 a.m. today, Scott Monty, the head of social media for Ford (yes, there is such a function now), began a Twitter conversation with Michael P. Leahy, head of a new Twitter-powered conservative group called Top Conservatives on Twitter (#TCOT).

Even if you don't have a Twitter account, I believe you should be able to follow this search link, which currently shows the "Tweet" below as the first result:

Town of Merrillville Indiana promotes Howard Fink

Howard Fink promoted at Town of Merrillville

Howard Fink's responsibilities in Merrillville will increase starting Monday, but Fink said he is ready for the opportunity.

Fink, who has served as the town's community development director since 2006, was named town administrator Tuesday.

The Town Council decided to promote Fink about a week after a second town manager candidate declined the job.

Fink is familiar with working with Merrillville residents. He led several informational meetings regarding stormwater management fees and also fielded several calls when the town decided to reduce to a single waste hauler.

If Fink proves he can handle his added responsibilities, the Town Council could later offer him the town manager position. Fink said he would be interested in the job if given the opportunity.

A number of 'tweeps' showed up today for a 'tweetup' -- don't ask. LOL. We heard 'names' like...

...and a girl named Tabby who has a dog named Bruce.

...and a guy named Bruce who has a cat named Tabby. Go figure.

We discussed how Twitter, Facebook and other social-networking sites can help missions and global awareness in general.... eg. the recent Mumbai story... being reported minute by minute among tweeters onsite at the hotels under seige.

Indiana cities and towns slashing budgets

Cities and counties across the state are slashing their budgets and will face even more cuts next year when the HB1001 property tax caps come partially into play. The property tax reforms passed in the 2008 Indiana General Assembly followed tax protests across the state in 2007 that came on the heels of the defeat of more than 40 percent of the state’s incumbent mayors that November. A number of municipalities are also preparing to seek a variety of new local option taxes to make up for some budgetary shortfalls, heeding the advice of Gov. Mitch Daniels, House Speaker B. Patrick Bauer and Senate President Pro Tempore David Long who made that appeal in 2007 in a rare joint statement. The Lake County Council slashed its budget by $15 million on Tuesday night, cutting 112 jobs.

Gary, facing a huge budget shortfall, laid off 15 firefighters on Monday. The cuts are coming later this year after the Department of Local Government Finance extended the budget deadlines to December.
