When we hug or kiss a loved one, oxytocin levels drive up. It also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain. In fact, the hormone plays a huge role in pair bonding. Prairie voles, one of nature's most monogamous species, produce oxytocin in spades. This hormone is also greatly stimulated during sex, birth, breast feeding, and the list goes on.

<clipSource>http://www.psychologytoday.com/basics/oxytocin</clipSource>

philosophy

clipped by: daevidd5

Clip Source: www.psychologytoday.com

Psych Basics

Gizmodo, however, has you covered on nearly any platform.

John Herrman runs down the best, easiest, and cheapest methods for backing up iPhones, Android units, BlackBerries, Windows Mobile, and Palm smartphones. Some involve backing up right to your computer's hard drive (which you can then back up to an online service or elsewhere), while others drop your data onto SD cards or onto free or cheap web cloud storage space. Not every platform supports every kind of data backup, but most allow you to put enough aside that a lost, stolen, or memory-wiped phone wouldn't cost you a whole day's worth of re-configuring.

Hit the link for Gizmodo's full guide. As cars become smaller and sleeker with our changing energy needs, the experience of driving is likely to morph too. Enter the VentureOne, from a California manufacturer and a Dutch engineering firm. It's one of half a dozen three-wheel concept cars being developed that combine the fuel savings of hybrids with the excitement of riding something like a motorcycle. In this case, the car is the same height and length as a Mini Cooper, but the car's pilot--er, driver--is enclosed in the single front seat by a glass canopy. (Another passenger can sit in the single backseat.) And on a quick turn--yee-ha!--the vehicle tilts to one side. The cars are priced at about $25,000 and go on sale in early 2010.

<clipSource>http://www.rd.com/your-america-inspiring-people-and-stories/four-ways-of-looking-at-a-car/article107692-1.html</clipSource>

exercise for men at 40

clipped by: daevidd5

Clip Source: www.parade.com

first. But what if one's sole objective is to learn French, for example?

Marilyn responds:

Richard: In either case, I wouldn't study Latin first. To learn several languages, I'd study
etymology, which focuses on the historical development of word forms as they're transmitted from
one language to another. This targets the most useful aspects of studying Latin and covers other
languages, such as Greek. Studying etymology helps one's understanding of English, too.

To learn only one language, I would study just that one.

Marilyn: I was somewhat disappointed in your answer to the question about whether a bicycle
can be used to power appliances during a power outage. Although technically accurate, I found your
answer incomplete. It's true, you can't power a refrigerator with a bicycle. As an amateur racer, I
can put out about 300 watts for an hour before collapsing. Even Lance Armstrong can manage only 500
watts over that period of time. However, if I use that bicycle to instead make a trip of 25 miles,
I save about one gallon of gasoline. That amount of gas could power a 2000-watt generator for 12
hours. When you look at the entire system, you see that bicycles are great for personal
transportation versus (relatively) energy-inefficient automobiles. The fuel saved can then be used
more efficiently to generate electricity.

        Deals With Prosecutors

Marilyn: Another difference between the deals a prosecutor makes and bribery is that the
deals are not hidden. (May 3, 2009) They are exposed in Court so the people making the
decision--whether judge or jury--can take that fact into account when deciding whether to believe
the testimony. We've all seen court dramas in which witnesses are asked, "...and did my office
offer you anything in exchange for your testimony?" by the prosecution (if no deal was made) or,
"Is it true that you have been offered a reduced sentence in exchange for testifying here today?"
by the defense.
Marilyn: You published a letter from a woman who deposited $200,000 into a savings
account at a bank and then had an investment counselor at that bank convince her to move the money
into a "supposedly safe" stock account. (May 31, 2009) The stock account then fell in value
to $139,000. This is an example of why I dislike the government's allowing savings banks to get
into the stock-brokering business. Some people assume that the FDIC insurance on their savings
accounts at banks also carries over to the banks' stock accounts, but the stocks are in fact
uninsured.

When the Earth was new, did the oceans have freshwater?
—Robert Oshust, Bayonne, N.J.

Yes, virtually. All water—even pure rainwater—contains chemicals called “salts.” Freshwater,
though, tastes saltless compared to ocean water with its immense amount of salt, which has
accumulated in the seas over hundreds of millions of years. Experts say the volume of salt in the
oceans would cover the Earth’s land surface hundreds of feet deep.

As ocean water has gradually become unfit for nearly all animals to drink, the process is an
example of natural environmental change.

Another big hitter is the Swiss-ball pushup. Say what you want about Swiss balls, this spin on a classic exercise adds some much-needed core action to a proven chest-and-shoulder builder. Finally, make sure you have the inverted row in your arsenal.
