A state law passed over three decades ago requires Wisconsin businesses and financial entities to turn all WI unclaimed money, stock and objects from safe deposit boxes to the Treasurer’s office for safekeeping after one to five years of dormancy. There is no time limit for collecting Wisconsin unclaimed property and a record $25 million Wisconsin unclaimed money was returned in 2007 by the State Treasury Department. According to the Treasurer, a total of 24,616 unclaimed money claims were paid out last year.

“We have about $330 million that belongs to Wisconsin citizens,” said the Treasurer. “It’s a big deal; $330 million is a lot of money. Gustav Follows Evacuees to Texas

The same storm they fled threatens to dump up to 2 feet of rain on parts of Texas and Louisiana, possibly keeping many evacuees from going home as quickly as they would like, and extending their stays in hotels and overcrowded shelters.

Nerves were already fraying at a shelter in Shreveport, La., where evacuees packed together for three days were starting to fight and question their decision to leave home in the first place.

The evacuees included about 290,000 from Texas and others from Mississippi and Alabama, but the vast majority were from Louisiana.

"We owe bills," said Pratt, 38. "We was told to leave, and (I used) all the money I had. We're just wondering what the hell we're going to do now."

Manufacturers are "experiencing higher prices for their inputs while demand for their products is slowing," Norbert J. Ore, chairman of ISM's manufacturing business survey committee, said in a statement accompanying the report.

Cooper and other manufacturers say they had been honoring the six-month price guarantees they gave customers before oil prices spiked 50 percent higher, hitting an intraday record of $143.67 a barrel earlier this week. When those price guarantees expired, manufacturers raced to recoup their increased costs.

The unemployment rate rose to 5.5 percent in May, up from 5 percent in April. The increase was the largest in two decades. Economists surveyed by Thomson Financial/IFR expect the same rate when June's number is released Thursday.

Economists continue to worry that higher prices will stifle growth. Lehman Brothers economist Michele Meyer said she expects higher prices to push the manufacturing reading below its break-even level next month.
