By burning away all the pesky carbon and other impurities, coal power plants produce heaps of radiation

the waste produced by coal plants is actually more radioactive than that generated by their nuclear counterparts. In fact, fly ash—a by-product from burning coal for power—contains up to 100 times more radiation than nuclear waste.

At issue is coal's content of uranium and thorium, both radioactive elements. They occur in such trace amounts in natural, or "whole," coal that they aren't a problem. But when coal is burned into fly ash, uranium and thorium are concentrated at up to 10 times their original levels.

Mother's extra-large pants prevent house fire

A family home has been saved from fire by a mother's extra-large Marks & Spencer pants.

Jenny Marsey's nephew used her size 18-20 cotton knickers to extinguish a frying pan blaze that threatened to burn down the house.

Darren Lines, 23, grabbed the blue pants from a pile of washing, doused them in water and threw them over the pan after attempts to put out the fire with water only made the problem worse.

"It could have been a lot worse," Mrs Marsey said.

"My family could have been in hospital but the knickers saved the day. I'm just grateful to the boys."

A businessman has spent almost seven years restoring a Spitfire from thousands of parts.

Martin Phillips admits that he is still some way away from realising his dream of seeing the vintage fighter, which he is restoring in a shed, take to the skies again

The project, which has cost nearly £1 million so far, began in earnest when Mr Phillips found the fuselage of a 1944 Mark IX Spitfire, RR232, in Worthing, West Sussex.

The final assembly and first flight of the restored aircraft will take place at the airport, which was a Second World War air base.

It turns out that men have the most children when their partners are around fifteen years their junior. At least for the Sami people of preindustrial Finland, this is true. Would you agree with the figure fifteen? Apparently there is evidence to show that the reason why men prefer young women is due to their high fertility while women prefer older men due to their wealth and high social status, which make them good providers for the offspring.

At $1 per Watt, the iTunes of Solar Energy Has Arrived

A Silicon Valley start-up called Nanosolar shipped its first solar panels -- priced at $1 a watt. That's the price at which solar energy gets cheaper than coal. Curious that this story is not on every front page.

Nanosolar has developed proprietary process technology that makes it possible to produce 100x thinner solar cells 100x faster.

Essentially, they've figured out how to print solar cells on thin sheets of aluminum with a printing press.

IBM's top manufacturing executive has joined Nanosolar

The company raised $100 million to build a factory, and has secured more than 600,000 feet of manufacturing space.

It already has orders for the first 18 months of manufacturing capacity

In 2002 he and Jane Ebert discovered that people were usually happier with decisions that they could not change because they concentrated on the positive aspects. When thinking about reversible decisions they were more objective. The finding, he said, suggested that marriage could prompt love, so he proposed to his girlfriend: “She said yes, and it turned out that the data were right: I love my wife more than I loved my girlfriend.”

Viagra was found to boost levels of oxytocin

Viagra may make a man more loving as well as improve his physical performance, research suggests.

Scientists have discovered that the impotence drug can boost levels of a "cuddle chemical" in the brain.

Oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone", is thought to promote romantic feelings and bonding between couples.

The hormone is released during orgasm in both men and women and has been linked to sexual arousal. It also plays important roles in childbirth and breast-feeding.

Viagra, the brand name of the drug sildenafil, overcomes impotence by blocking an enzyme that limits blood flow to the penis.

The same protein, phosphodiesterase type 5, also acts as a brake to regulate oxytocin release in the brain. Viagra eases the brake off and allows cells in the brain's pituitary gland to generate more of the hormone.

Just as Viagra needs a sexual trigger to cure impotence, the drug will only induce oxytocin release in response to the right nerve messages.

Men who hate supermarket shopping now have the ultimate excuse to leave it to their mothers, wives or girlfriends.

Today, a scientific study says that over many thousands of years evolution has designed women to excel when it comes to hunting down the most fulfilling food.

Women also did better with a high-calorie food, such as a doughnut, compared with a stick of celery.

Traditional methods to test navigating talents have neglected to explore the crucial calorific motivation of chocolate, cake and other high calorie foods, he said.

“It was a dramatic effect,” he said. “Memory for the high-calorie foods like honey and avocados was as much as four times as accurate as memory for the low-calorie foods like cucumber and lettuce,” he said.

Explorer Colonel John Blashford-Snell has had close encounters with vampire bats and angry bees, but his latest brush has been with a rather odd dog.

He spotted a rare breed of Double-Nosed Andean tiger hound, which has two noses, on a recent trip to Bolivia.

He said: "While we were there, sitting by the fire one night, I saw an extraordinary-looking dog that appeared to have two noses.

"I was sober at the time, and then I remembered the story that the legendary explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett came back with in 1913 of seeing such strange dogs in the Amazon jungle.

He said: "This breed could be used for sniffing out mines or narcotics because they have an enhanced sense of smell."

Time travel could be possible ... in the future

It may take more than a nuclear-powered De Lorean or a spinning police box, but time travel could actually be a possibility for future generations, according to an eminent professor of physics.

Prof Amos Ori has set out a theoretical model of a time machine which would allow people to travel back in time to explore the past.

The way the machine would work rests on Einstein’s theory of general relativity, a theory of gravity that shows how time can be warped by the gravitational pull of objects.

Bend time enough and you can create a loop and the possibility of temporal travel.

It is now possible to use any material, even dust, so long as there is enough of it to bend spacetime into a loop.

But now, in Physical Review, Prof Ori has provided some more advanced solutions to the problems of time travel outlined by the likes of Prof Hawking, helping to realise an idea that dates back millennia and appears in 18th century literature, Harry Potter, Dickens, sci-fi movies and much more besides.
