Our government will keep our personal information safe from identity theft.

If you believe that statement, I have a nice bridge for sale - cheap….

Unfortunately, our government isn’t doing a great job to protect us from identity thieves. It’s been almost two years since millions of our veteran’s names, SSN and birth dates were made available in a huge security breach. You’d think they’d have learned a lesson from that, but I guess there’s just too much red tape needed to actually get the ball rolling in Washington to implement tighter security.

Besides the Feds, our local governments need to tighten up on security measures, too. The Davidson County Election Commission Building in Nashville, TN lost 370,000 registered voter’s info in a break-in on 12/28/07. On the same day, the US Air Force lost a laptop with info affecting 10,501 active and retired Air Force members and the Minnesota Dept. of Commerce lost a laptop with info on 219 identities.

WOW.. Identity theft has hit the big time….

Today I got a letter from the US Postal Service address to "Resident" and the envelope said, "Identity theft Prevention Tips." Inside it was a nice letter from the Postmaster General and a brochure put out by the FTC about identity theft.

I'm guessing every household in the US is getting one of those this month. I really can't recall getting anything like this before.

Nashville Voters Had Social Security Numbers Stolen

Not going to be a Happy New Year for thousands.

Registered voters in Nashville, TN or Davidson County may get more than the big credit card bills in January they accumulated from Christmas shopping. They could get bills from credit card accounts they didn't even open.

Thieves broke into the Elections Commission building over the holidays and stole computers containing personal information on all registered voters including their social security numbers.

Monster.com waited five days to tell its users about a security breach that resulted in the theft of confidential information from some 1.3 million job seekers, a company executive told Reuters on Thursday.

Hackers broke into the U.S. online recruitment site's password-protected resume library using credentials that Monster Worldwide Inc (MNST) said were stolen from its clients in one of the biggest Internet security breaches in recent memory.

On August 21, Symantec published a report on its Web site that said it had found copies of scam e-mails that the engineers of the attack were using, with the aim of getting information that was more valuable than just the names and contact details of Monster.com users.

Pretending to be sent through Monster.com from job recruiters, the e-mails asked recipients to provide personal financial data, including bank account numbers. They also asked users to click on links that could infect their PCs with malicious software.

'Margin Debt' Hits Record $353 Billion on NYSE

Investors are borrowing record sums of money to finance trades on the New York Stock Exchange, according to data due out from the Big Board today.

NYSE officials attribute the trend to recent regulatory changes effectively allowing both small and big investors to take on more leverage, or borrowed money, from their brokers. So-called margin debt, a broad measure of leverage, jumped 11% to $353 billion at NYSE in May, up from nearly $318 billion in April.

Wall Street has had a love affair with leverage in recent years, typified by hedge funds and private-equity firms that make use of it to buy companies and stocks and bonds.

Human pheromones have captured the imagination of many people around the world.

The thought that an invisible chemical picked up by an organ known as the VNO (Vomeronasal Organ) can carry signals between individuals has excited the scientific world.

Lenders in the past had relaxed their rules on borrowers. Quite a number of Chicago mortgage shoppers found it very easy to get mortgages for homes they could not afford if using traditional mortgage products. Many were enticed by adjustable rate mortgages, interest only mortgages and other vehicles that hid the true cost of home ownership by offering initial monthly payments that made it easy to qualify for the loan.

Unfortunately for those who have these mortgage products the initial rate are transitioning to the adjustable period after 3, 5 or 7 years. At this point the rates adjust upward to more closely match the going rate for money. This can cause the monthly mortgage payment to balloon upward by several hundred or thousand dollars a month. Homeowners who were near the limit of their capability to pay monthly bills and living expenses are now scrambling to pay the increase in their home loan bill.

The first thing to do is call all the creditor with the account you believe is fraudulent and tell them it wasn't you who opened that account. Document your call with the phone number, extension, date, time and who you spoke to. Write notes about your conversation.

Make sure to understand the process of how this creditor handles fraud claims. Make sure you understand what is expected from you. Ask what you can expect from them. Again, write all this down during the conversation.

Next, protect yourself with a 90-day security alert with the three credit reporting agencies - Equifax, Transunion and Experian. A 90-day security alert gives you time to verify if you are a victim of fraud. If you determine you are a fraud victim, you may add a 7-year victim statement to your credit report.

After the investigation on the fraudulent account is finished, ask the creditor for a document that states you are not responsible for the debt.

Did you hear about the woman who stole an identity to get a job at Equifax?

Now why would somebody do that?

My best guess is she was able to get access to the 'mother lode' of identity information. Like social security numbers, birthdates, credit card accounts, current address, past addresses and any accounts you have that are open or closed. This info is immediately sold all over the world - not once, but over and over.

Why do you think someone would steal an identity to go to work at Equifax? I’m guessing it gave her access to the mother lode of identity information ripe for stealing. Not just your social security number or credit card number, but also your date of birth, previous addresses, jobs, other lines of credit - everything a thief needs to, well, become YOU.

By now, most of us know the basics of protecting our social security number, don’t write your PIN on your ATM card, shred pre-approved credit card offers, on and on. The truth is, thieves are now targeting large groups of identity to steal - not just one at a time.

Identity fraud, in particular, where identities are stolen or fictitious identities are created, is becoming an increasing problem due to emerging (and rapidly evolving) technologies which enable such crimes to be committed. Thieves from all around the world are very clever at hacking into sites or 'phishing' for information. But an even easier way for someone to commit id fraud is to go through trash looking for credit card offers or even mortgage offers. If you own a house, you know what I'm talking about - every week somebody is going to give you a better interest rate if you refinance with them.
