Eight rules for writing fiction:

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

4. Every sentence must do one of two things -- reveal character or advance the action.

5. Start as close to the end as possible.

6. Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them -- in order that the reader may see what they are made of.

7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

Today however, the Chemistry Set is toast. Current instantiations are embarrassing. There are no chemicals except those which react at low energy to produce color changes. No glass tubes or beakers, certainly no Bunsen burners or alcohol burners (remember the clear blue flames when the alcohol spilled out over the table). Today’s sets cover perfume mixing and creation of luminol (the ‘CSI effect’ I suppose).

Blizzard On Diablo Film: "No Comment"

Word has it that developer Blizzard has given the "ok" to a Diablo film adaptation. Legendary Pictures (Batman Begins, 300) listed a Diablo flick as "in development." It has since been removed, but Legendary's World of Warcraft movie is still listed as "in development." Legendary Pictures has a close relationship with Blizzard and is apparently creating a motion picture based on the entire Warcraft franchise and not just the MMORPG as suggested by the movie company's webpage. When contacted about the unannounced Diablo movie, Blizzard said it had "no comment to make on this." No comment or not, at least the Diablo flick is rumored to be in good hands. Brian Ashcraft

What’s the difference between a Lego builder and a Lego artist? The answer is simple. Nathan Sawaya. Formerly studying law, Sawaya decided his life needed to go in a different direction. That direction happened to be a professional Lego artist. He currently displays his “brick” works in exhibitions.

Legos have never held this much cultural significance. Or something like that. I dunno, just trying to sound artsy. But wow, take a look at more of these pics after the jump.

The Geostationary Banana Over Texas is an art intervention that involves placing a gigantic banana over the Texas sky. This object will float between the high atmosphere and Earth's low orbit, being visible only from the state of Texas and its surroundings.
From the ground the banana will be clearly recognizable and visible day and night; it will stay up for approximately one month.

While the US gov't may have trouble keeping track of important computers with sensitive information, there's just something extra special about the way top secret information leaks in Japan. There were, of course, the nuclear secrets leaked via a file sharing program, after an outside contractor was allowed to use his personal computer to store the documents. The latest seems almost as bizarre. Apparently top secret information on Aegis destroyers were passed among a few petty officers in Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force, after one such officer copied the porn directory from a colleague's computer. This raises all sorts of questions, but the biggest one has to be: what person thinks that they'll hide top secret military documents in a porn folder and assume that that's the least likely place that people will end up looking?

Amazing Fact: In 1996, PCs were cuter than Macs

The main difference here, at least to me, is that in the "vintage" Mac/PC ad, the "PC" is actually a good-looking, vaguely Jude Law-ish character (he's got that "sinister Wall Streeter" look, it's very American Psycho) while the "Mac" pretty much looks like a pre-bust dotcom dweeb who would've fit right into a sidekick role on one of the corny sitcoms of the day. So, yeah, if I had to go out to dinner with one of these young fellers, I'd have to choose the well-groomed PC over the sloppy Mac who thinks he can look swanky by tucking his T-shirt into his jeans. Let's hope the intended "nerd/cool guy" dynamic of John Hodgman and Justin Long has better lasting power than that of the guys in this predecessor. Do you think Justin's garage-band haircut will one day look just as ridiculous as the '96 Mac's?
