Ocean Dead Zones May Be Worse Than Thought

Oxygen-starved ocean dead zones may be more widespread than thought.

Spanish researchers found that many species die off at oxygen levels well above what is now considered uninhabitable. The new study suggests that the extent of dead zones in coastal areas that support fishing industries is greater than previously known.

"The dead zones are occurring in areas that are very productive fishing grounds," said Diaz. "Everything is pointing towards a more desperate situation in all aquatic systems, freshwater and marine. That's pretty clear. People should be worried, all over the world."

Doha's "Wall": The World's First Underground Stadium

When the new "Wall" Stadium set to be built in Doha, Qatar is completed in 2010, it will be the first underground stadium ever constructed. Nicknamed "The Laptop" for obvious reasons, the stadium will have no traditional floodlights. Instead, the lights will be embedded into the architecture, which adds to the clean futuristic look. Apparently, the unique underground design will serve as a natural air conditioning system of sorts, which saves money that could have been spent on a traditional domed, temperature controlled facility.

The Wall is expected to host a number of major soccer events in the future, but with a capacity of only 11,000, I have a hard time believing that will be possible. To be honest, it seems as though the design has taken precedence over common sense here. Why else would you build such a tiny stadium on what is obviously a large piece of real estate? [above] welcome to ronda (google maps here), a beautiful city in southern spain which is split in two by el tajo gorge. as a result, certain buildings have been perched on the edge of the gorge’s verticall walls, enormous cliffs bridged by the 200 year old peunte neuvo. now, although living on the edge of that gigantic 130m crack would give me the shakes, i’d much rather live there than bonifacio…

[above] this is bonifacio in corsica (google maps here). this fragile looking citadel sits precariously above limestone cliffs which over the years have been battered by the mediterranean sea, a process which is apparent by both the piles of eroded stone at the base and the overhang of the cliff walls. how long before the next building gets swallowed? no idea, but from the look of the first photo it can’t be long.

anyone know of any more frightening clifftop towns?

Hi-tech tombstones in Japan let mourners link to images, videos of deceased

The tombstones are being sold by stone processing company Ishinokoe. Behind doors on the tombstone that can be locked is a QR code -- a square code read by mobile phones that can link to Web addresses. Grave visitors can use the code to access images and photographs of the person while they were alive.

KOFU -- A gravestone manufacturer here is helping bereaved families remember their loved ones with a touch of technology -- mobile phone QR codes on tombstones that link to photographs and video clips of the deceased.

"Tombstones change with the ages," said Ishinokoe president Yoshitsugu Fukazawa. "If my grandfather who started the company could see this, he'd probably be really surprised."

The QR codes can also be added to existing graves, for a price of about 200,000 yen.

I don't want to turn Kurt Cobain into an apostle, but let's get serious... Doesn't he deserve better?! The sneakers would be one thing - but did Courtney have to allow images of his personal sketches and actual words from his diary to be emblazoned on the shoes? Literally and symbolically speaking, you are WALKING ON HIS WORDS. When you consider the context, the creativity, the angst and the emotion that was likely going on in those diary pages - isn't it sacrilegious to continually (and in the worst way, some might say) cash in on someone's artistry - their life's work?

Now putting this aside - I can't fault Converse.

Did I mention....; They got Jerry Garcia too?! - Yes, Virginia, there will two (here & here) Grateful Dead Converses coming to a shoe store in a Mall near you

iPhone 3G Launch Date Confirmed

In Spain, for example, the 3G iPhone will be available for sale at the June 18th grand opening of Telefonica's megastore—an Apple Store-like shop located in the company's historical building in Madrid's Gran Vía— with nationwide availability the next day or after a few hours. The other European countries with iPhone availability will have similar launch schedules.

We all suspected it, but now it is confirmed: someone very, very close to the 3G iPhone launch has told me that Apple will announce their new model at the WWDC Keynote on June 9th. The second-generation iPhone will be available worldwide right after the launch, and not at year's end, as previously thought. The new model will also herald new sales policies in some countries.
