Tom Fagan was a number of things during a lifetime of newspaper reporting, raising a family and assuming legendary status in the comic book community.

But in Rutland, where the 76-year-old lived before his death on Monday, he was known as "Mr. Halloween" — the man who helped create an All-Hallows-Eve procession of ghosts, ghouls and costumed greats in the 1950s that endures today as the biggest Halloween parade in the state.

In that sense, the parade, which celebrates its 49th year next Friday, represents his most crowning achievement.

The annual event attracted more than 10,000 people last year and has been visited by caped crusaders sent by DC Comics and Marvel Comics — two heavyweights in the comic world.

Perhaps an even bigger distinction and honor, both the Rutland parade and Fagan have appeared in the pages of such comics as "Batman" and "The Avengers."

"Without Tom, there wouldn't be a Halloween parade in Rutland," Marro said. "That's his legacy."

Japanese comic industry profits from political crisis

Tokyo - Producers of Japan's manga comic books are rejoicing over the political hubbub after the surprise resignation of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, a Japanese business daily said Wednesday. Shares of animation companies shot up since former foreign minister Taro Aso, an avid fan of manga, is touted as the most likely candidate to succeed Fukuda at the helm of the Liberal Democratic Party and as prime minister.

Nikkei, Japan's leading business daily said that shares of Broccoli, a company selling animation products rose 21 per cent to 70 yen (0.65 dollars) Tuesday after Aso announced his candidature.

When approached by CBR, representatives of Platinum declined to comment. In e-mail correspondence with publishers, Ellison said: "It is my understanding that the delay in reconciliation and payments for the Q2 royalties is a result of the ongoing transition of the Wowio acquisition. Naturally, we were assumed and hoped to have all accounts reconciled on the 15th as promised, but it has taken longer than we expected. I wish I could give you an exact date on the Q2 payments, but I honestly don't have one. Payments are going out as quickly as we can get them sent."

Ellison assures Wowio creators their payments are forthcoming, but most are not content to sit idly with their Q2 revenue in the wind.

HULK to be first Universal Blu-ray DVD

Universal has announced that The Incredible Hulk will be the studio's first Blu-ray release.

The Marvel Comics film, which stars Edward Norton and earned $250 million at the worldwide box office, will make its high-definition debut on October 13.

Extras exclusive to Blu-ray include deleted scenes, an alternate opening, a scene explorer and interactive BD-Live functions allowing viewers to chat to friends while watching the film and share their favourite clips.

But that wasn’t enough. For Q1, we got our first significantly late payout. The money only arrived in the nick of time to help us meet some important expenses. Now, for Q2, the payout will be even later, if indeed it comes at all. If I hadn’t made another business arrangement in the interim, I’d be in real trouble. It’s my understanding that as of this writing, almost none of the publishers have been paid.

Q3’s payout is hardly relevant, because thanks to the changes made to the site in the last two months, our earnings have dropped 97.3%. I’m not going to fight over less than a hundred dollars. So all Wowio had to do was pay me for Q2 and I’d be out of their hair. Sadly, they couldn’t even manage that.

But when Comic Foundry made the jump from online to print publication last year, it did just that. The new quarterly publication offers easy access to comics for a new generation of comic readers with great writing, a hip emphasis on lifestyle—from tips on “comic book fashion” to a list of “cute creator couples”—and an editorial embrace of comics of all kinds, from indie and superhero comics to manga and everything in between. It's even got an issue on politics coming up.

Virgin Comics Closes New York Office

Virgin Comics, the high-profile 2006 international joint venture between Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and the India-based comics publisher Gotham Entertainment, has been shut down. The company’s New York office and publishing unit has been closed and the eight people that staff it have been laid off.

The company produced about 17 different comics series in addition to publishing about 18 trade paperback collections and 3 hardcover titles. It is unclear what will happen to the rights to these properties.
