Skulls, rib cages, and tibias create corridors of bones in the catacombs of Paris. Ovecrowded cemeteries in the 18th century caused severe hygiene problems. Bodies were exhumed and transferred to the tunnels, which can be toured today.

I came across these psychedelic-looking roses at the county fair the other day and just had to snap a few photos. Yes, they're real! The signage at the event explained that the flowers hail from the Netherlands, and that the multi-hued effect is created by injecting various dyes into the stems during the growing process. The effect is very surreal, like a wedding bouquet a Deadhead might carry. Does anyone out there have any more information about these wild and crazy roses? More photos in the CRAFT Flickr pool. According to the natives, there was a magic stone in the wilderness that possessed the ability to swallow anything that passed by. The Native Americans avoided the mysterious area near Glastenbury Mountain and considered it to be cursed, using it only for a burial ground.

This was long before the strange disappearances of people occurred. The first white settlers did not take the legend seriously until their families and closest friends began to disappear without trace.

Not one clue was ever found. Paula Welden just simply vanished into thin air!

More recently, UFO sightings, strange creatures and hairy "wild men" were reported to be seen in the woods close to the Bennington Triangle.

Not only does sea claim its victims, the mountain just does the same...

Here’s the story of how scientists unlocked the secrets of the worst natural disaster in the history of the West African nation of Cameroon… and what they’re doing to try and stop it from happening again.

Overnight, something had killed nearly 1,800 people. Plus more than 3,000 cattle and countless wild animals, birds and insects—in short every living creature for miles around.

The official death toll was recorded as 1,746 people, but that was only an estimate, because the survivors had already begun to bury victims in mass graves, and many terrified survivors had fled corpse-filled villages and were hiding in the forest. Whatever it was that killed so many people seemed to have disappeared without a trace just as quickly as it had come.

There was no evidence of bleeding, physical trauma, or disease, and no sign of exposure to radiation, chemical weapons, or poison gas. And there was no evidence of suffering or “death agony”: The victims apparently just blacked out, fell over, and died.

Any librarian who has pulled a tour of duty on the circulation desk of a public library has a few tales to tell about the curious objects people use, and then forget to remove, as bookmarks.

"People leave photos, Social Security cards and driver's licenses," said Kate Porter, assistant director of the Upper Arlington (Ohio) Public Library, "gum in wrappers, letters that need to be mailed, prescriptions, airline tickets _ some that are unused and some that are used _ ponytail holders, fines that they owe the library."

"We've seen a condom as a bookmark," said Vi Yarman, head of circulation of the public library in Mount Vernon, Ohio. "It was not used. The patron was renewing the book. My staff opened the book up, and the patron said, 'Oh, that's my book mark.' "

Haeckel describes the wide variety of sea-squirts as "usually living alone as single organisms, they sometimes form colonies of mushroom-like bodies clustered around a central core or collective mouth." The single squirt from Sumatra (top left) resembles a pincushion: its mouth, the red-flanged central figure, is segmented into four lips with many wart-like sacs. The translucent shells or "tunics" of these creatures is composed of cellulose, a rarity in the animal kingdom. Their intense coloration and surface glisten has resulted in one of Haeckel's most decorative illustrations, resembling a collection of Russian Easter eggs or Faberge enamels.
