The ongoing anti-trust lawsuit against Microsoft in the state of Iowa has uncovered evidence that the Redmond-based company considered halting Mac Office development to "do a great deal of harm to Apple immediately," and that the company used Mac users as test subjects for new features of its Office application prior to a more "critical" Windows release.

An email memo dated June of 1997 from Microsoft founder Bill Gates to Ben Waldman

describes dumping Mac Office as "the strongest bargaining point we have, as doing so will do a great deal of harm to Apple immediately.

Tags: business, computers, ethics, mac, microsoft, bill gates

<clipSource>http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/03/05/mac.users.test.subjects/</clipSource>

Bored at home? me tell you about five of the other enemies we face from within. The
first enemy that you've got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference.
What a tragic disease this is. "Ho-hum, let it slide. I'll just
drift along." Here's one problem with drifting: you can't drift
your way to the top of the mountain.

The
second enemy we face is indecision. Indecision is the thief of opportunity
and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future. Take
            a sword to this enemy.

The
third enemy inside is doubt. Sure, there's room for healthy skepticism.
You can't believe everything. But you also can't let doubt take over.
Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt
the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities.
Worse of all, they doubt themselves. I'm telling you, doubt will destroy
your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank
account and your heart. Doubt is an enemy Go after it. Get rid of
            it.

The
fourth enemy within is worry. We've all got to worry some. Just don't
let it conquer you. Instead, let it alarm you. Worry can be useful.
If you step off the curb in New York City and a taxi is coming, you've
got to worry. But you can't let worry loose like a mad dog that drives
you into a small corner. Here's what you've got to do with your worries:
drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get you, you've
got to get it. Whatever is pushing on you, you've got to push back.

The
fifth interior enemy is over-caution. It is the timid approach to
life. Timidity is not a virtue; it's an illness. If you let it go,
it'll conquer you. Timid people don't get promoted. They don't advance
and grow and become powerful in the marketplace. You've got to avoid
            over-caution.

Tags: psychology, fear

<clipSource>http://www.joshhinds.com/goals/goals_jrohnenemies.html</clipSource>

The 2 Faces of Change

clipped by: coecoe321
clipper's remarks: I couldn't have read this at a better time in my life. faces, the face of danger and the face of opportunity. The danger face is usually seen
first. You may have to look hard to find the opportunity face.

Change begins with loss.

Change always involves danger because change always begins
with loss. In order to change you must let go of where you are to get to where you are
going. You leave something behind. Such loss is usually experienced as a threat and
    therefore a danger.

The "Letting Go" phase of change involves losses
which can range from giving up the security of a routine task, to saying good bye to a
familiar environment, to losing meaningful long term work relationships. Such a series of
losses may be the result of having received a promotion and new career opportunities.
While this is a positive change, it still involves loss. Whether a change is positive or
    negative, loss is always involved.

The Dangerous/Opportunity

The Chinese word for crisis is similar to the faces of
change. The Chinese ideogram for crisis is composed of two separate characters. One means
danger and the other means opportunity. The proper translation is, "Crisis is a
dangerous opportunity." Often the danger of a crisis is readily seen while the
opportunity can be well hidden. Frequently, crisis and change are seen as the same. When
confronted with either it is important to recognize both the danger and the opportunity.

Seek the opportunity

However, once you have scanned for the danger of change
remember to seek out the opportunity. The opportunity may not be obvious or immediate. The
opportunity may be subtle such as the chance to learn something new. It may involve the
taking on more responsibility which later opens new doors. Opportunity could give you more
time with your family. It might make you a more mature person. You could receive financial
rewards. Opportunity can be well disguised. Remember to seek it out.

Always look for the positive face of change.

Tags: change, life, psychology, motivation, career

<clipSource>http://www.lessons4living.com/faces.htm</clipSource>

25 Things You Should Have Learned by Middle Age

clipped by: coecoe321
clipper's remarks: Love this!

Clip Source: desiredcreations.com

It is like if I were to say to you now - do not think about a pink elephant. No matter how hard you try not to the image of a pink elephant pops into your head.

Likewise, if you have an exam coming up or a driving test, it is natural to worry about it. At the same time those natural worries are keeping you awake at night or the constant worry during the day is wearing you out.

Well here is a tip that might help. Have a worry hour. Pick a time of day and say to yourself - I am going to allow myself to worry about X, Y or Z at that specific time and the rest of the time I am not going to think about those worries. So you have made a date with yourself in the future to worry about your problems. You don't need to worry about them now. You have your worry hour for that. The same goes for trying to sleep at night. You don't need to worry then you have your worry hour tomorrow for that.

Give it a go. It worked for me...

Tags: success, psychology

<clipSource>http://www.accomplishlife.com/blogs/16/The-Worry-Hour.html</clipSource>

The Golden Rule

clipped by: coecoe321
clipper's remarks: It's so simple...

Clip Source: www.chaos-works.com

Christianity:

Reduces stress and creates psychological security

Helps improve interpersonal relationships

Helps develop the ideal organizational climate

Give criticism in private.

Do not sound threatening.

Keep the criticism balanced.

Focus on the problem, not on the person's personality.

Don't overstate the problem by using words such as "always," "never" or "worst."

Give criticism soon after the event.

Pose questions that let the person do the work for you.

Stick to one subject. Don't string together criticisms at one sitting.

Don't remind people of previous instances that were resolved.

Use the "I" mode.

Golden Rules of Receiving Criticism:

Welcome feedback.

Listen to the criticism.

Maintain eye contact and open body language as you listen.

Restate the criticism to make sure you understand it.

View the criticism as an attempt to fix a problem, not a personal attack.

Focus on possible solutions to each criticism.

Here’s why…

Working toward your goals and achieving them brings you long term happiness. But in the short run, the primitive part of our brain that wants to move away from pain and toward pleasure kicks in.

Study after study has shown that activities make us happy. An article from the USA Today titled Psychologists now know what makes people happy, archived here, has this to say:

Life satisfaction occurs most often when people are engaged in absorbing activities that cause them to forget themselves, lose track of time and stop worrying. “Flow” is the term Claremont Graduate University psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced cheeks-sent-mee-hi) coined to describe this phenomenon.

People in flow may be sewing up a storm, doing brain surgery, playing a musical instrument or working a hard puzzle with their child. The impact is the same: A life of many activities in flow is likely to be a life of great satisfaction, Csikszentmihalyi says. And you don’t have to be a hotshot to get there.

This brings us back, though, to how easy it is to be lazy. Biologically, our brains (like the brains of any other animal) want us to have pleasure and shrink from pain, with the least amount of effort.

So in order to get going — to achieve that satisfying state of flow — it requires an initial burst of special effort to get past that short circuit in your mind. But after that, you’ll feel a deep, long-term bliss.

Tags: psychology, motivation

<clipSource>http://www.overcominglaziness.com/laziness-is-a-short-circuit-in-your-brain/</clipSource>
