One cold, windy afternoon I stood on a street corner thinking uncharitable thoughts about the differences between men and women as I waited for my wife to pick me up. She was, at that moment, 15 minutes late, despite having called from her office to say that she was on the way and would be right there. "Why," I thought, "do so many women have such a vague attachment to the concept of on time"? There are those who argue that that’s not the case, that women don’t have a problem with being on time.

To them I offer as collateral argument, womens' watches. On a woman. a watch is jewelry first, and a timepiece second. Only women to whom time must matter, such as nurses, wear watches that you can really read. Most womens' watches are so small you have trouble telling it’s a watch, much less what time it is. If you see a watch like that on a woman, be prepared to spend time cooling your heels as you wait for her.

While I'll be the first to admit that my chances of ever entering into a meaningful relationship with someone special are practically non-existent, I staunchly refuse to admit that it has anything to do with some inherent problem with me. Instead, I am convinced that the situation can be readily explained in purely scientific terms, using nothing more than demographics and some elementary statistical calculus.

A TEENAGER has turned down £8.5million to sell his website.

Nick Coates, 17, runs Sharpenews — the first global news site aimed at young people.

It has had 89million hits in 18 months and rakes in £2,500 a month from advertisers.

Several firms have made big offers but Nick insists he doesn’t need the money.

He said: “I could walk away with about £4million — but I’m not interested in that at the moment.”

Nick, of Cheltenham, Gloucs, started the site when he was just 12. It now has 70 volunteer staff worldwide and has won awards including website of the year.

The whizzkid is also studying for four A-levels and even does ten hours a week working at a Comet store.

There is an art to checking yourself out and it must be done subtly. If you can pull it off, stray wisps of hair, extra sauce in your whiskers and untucked shirts will be a thing of the past.

Back seat windows can be nearly as clear as a bathroom mirror and if anyone catches you baring your teeth at a BMW just play it off like you were checking out the car.

If reflective surfaces are nowhere to be found another easy way to keep yourself in check is to use the people around you. Carefully worded and leading questions can provoke people to clue you in to any mishaps that may befoul your current state of grooming.

If you know another guy as conceited as you in your workplace, partner up.

A series of hand gestures, code phrases and body language can be used to alert each other of grooming mistakes.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to a lesser extent, perhaps so is grooming.

Mother kept girls locked away from the world for seven years

Three girls who were imprisoned by their mother in a house of indescribable filth for seven years may never recover from the ordeal, experts said last night.

The girls’ ordeal was apparently sparked by their parents’ divorce, after which their mother, a 53-year-old lawyer, suffered a breakdown. But she won custody of the girls — then aged 7, 11 and 13 — and withdrew them from school, claiming that she would give them private tuition at home.

The girls, Viktoria, Katharina and Elisabeth, were rescued only when police broke into the house after a neighbour, who had reported his suspicions several times, threatened a local council official with a lawsuit.

Although that was in October 2005, and the three have been in a specialised therapy centre since, the scandal was only revealed at the weekend.

The mother is now being held in a special remand prison branch for the mentally unstable. She will appear in court in a few weeks on charges of grievous bodily harm and torture, and is facing between five months and five years in prison.

Waltraud Kubelka, a therapist who is now treating the three girls, said that their psycho-social and physical development was “catastrophic”.

It is believed that the children had contact only with their mother during the seven years of captivity and, as a consequence, developed an almost unintelligible language of their own, described as a “singing-like” form of German.

But according to her carers, the youngest of the three, Viktoria, could soon be discharged from therapy to join her father, who now is in constant contact with his daughters.

The mother’s legal training and knowledge of the law has reportedly enabled her to postpone the trial. The case will he heard in front of a court in Klagenfurt in the next weeks, as both she and her husband are well known in the legal community of Linz.

	A HAPPY THOUGHT: People in a happy mood perform better than others on a task that requires them to be creative, but do worse when asked to cut through distractions and focus on one thing.

Despite those who romanticize depression as the wellspring of artistic genius, studies find that people are most creative when they are in a good mood, and now researchers may have explained why: For better or worse, happy people have a harder time focusing.

University of Toronto psychologists induced a happy, sad or neutral state in each of 24 participants by playing them specially chosen musical selections. To instill happiness, for example, they played a jazzy version of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. After each musical interlude, the researchers gave subjects two tests to assess their creativity and concentration.

In one test, participants in a happy mood were better able to come up with a word that unified three other seemingly disparate words, such as "mower," "atomic" and "foreign." Solving the puzzle required participants to think creatively, moving beyond the normal word associations--"lawn," "bomb" and "currency"--to come up with the more remote answer: "power."

Interestingly, induced happiness made the subjects worse at the second task, which required them to ignore distractions and focus on a single piece of information. Participants had to identify a letter flashed on a computer screen flanked by either the same letter, as in the string "N N N N N," or a different letter, as in "H H N H H." When the surrounding letters didn't match, the happy participants were slower to recognize the target letter in the middle, indicating that the ringers distracted them.

In a study of 158 women with bulimia-type eating disorders, Australian researchers found that nearly half did not acknowledge a problem with their eating. This was particularly true of those who did not vomit to control their weight.

But there are also non-purging forms of bulimia, where tactics like excessive exercise or strict dieting are used to counter binge-eating episodes.

Still other people have certain symptoms of bulimia but fall short of all the criteria used to diagnose the disorder; they may fall into the category of "eating disorder not otherwise specified," or EDNOS.

The new study, published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, focused on women with "bulimic-type" eating disorders. This included those with purging or non-purging bulimia, as well as women with EDNOS. Some women in the latter group were diagnosed with binge-eating disorder, which involves excessive eating but no purging to compensate]

Women who used self-induced vomiting were nearly six times more likely than other women to recognize that they had a problem, the study found. Continued...

This is partly due to media portrayals of eating disorders, which typically highlight anorexia and purging-type bulimia, Mond told Reuters Health.

But there's also a general perception that excessive exercise and strict calorie-cutting are acceptable, or even "desirable," behaviors, he added.

And that awareness needs to spread not only in the general public, Mond noted, but among doctors and other health professionals.

In some cases where a woman with one of these eating disorders does seek treatment, he explained, the doctor may treat what's seen as the "true" problem -- such as depression or anxiety -- leaving the eating disorder inadequately addressed.

Toronto is truly a "city of neighborhoods" as Mayor Miller has suggested. A trip through TO could bring you in contact with plenty of new cultural experiences whether you pass through Little Poland, Little Jamaica or Greektown, but it's on the eclectic streets of Kensington Market where you'll find the remnants of all of Toronto's communities meshed in one place. Because of this, many of Toronto's new immigrants have called it their first home, and it's also due to this diversity that Parks Canada has just designated Kensington Market a national historic site. This honour is shared with only two other Toronto areas - The Distillery District and Fort York.

Kensington Market can mean many things to many different people. When I was in high school it was a place to shop with friends and pick up vintage jeans. Now it's where I go when I crave something out of the ordinary to eat or a place to explore. Murmur allows everyone to explore the stories of Kensington, both past and present, through audio files available on their site or by spotting the green ear perched on poles around the neighborhood and calling in. You can share your stories too, or choose to get more involved by debating issues like car free days or The Market's growing nightlife scene. While Kensington is a hub for all kinds of people, there definitely seems to be similar priorities for those in the community. They'd rather see free-spirited shops and cafes continue to line its streets than condos and mega-stores. Hopefully, the historic designation will help.

It is a mystery that has for centuries befuddled midwives and scientists alike: why do mothers insist that their scrunched-up, ruddy-faced, newborn babies look just like daddy?

Evolutionary biologists claim they finally have the answer. So deep-rooted in the male psyche is the fear that the baby might be someone else's, that women subconsciously do their best to offer reassurance, they say.

Scientists delved into the delicate issue of mistaken paternity by studying 69 families with 83 children. After assigning the children to groups depending on their age and gender, they asked the parents to rate how much their children looked like themselves and their partner. They then asked independent judges to give their opinion on which parent the children most resembled.

In every case, mothers claimed their newborn babies resembled their male partner. The men in the relationship were less certain, with only 83% believing the child looked like them. The judges were even less convinced, stating around 40% of the time that a newborn baby looked like the proposed father.

Lead scientist Alexandra Alvergne at the University of Montpellier said women seek to allay their partner's doubts subconsciously by proclaiming their baby has the man's features even when it is extremely difficult for others to see the resemblance.

1. Drugs are everywhere. Despite a $40 billion a year "war on drugs" and political speeches about a "drug-free society," our society is swimming in drugs. Cigarettes, sugar, alcohol, marijuana, Prozac, Ritalin, Viagra, steroids and caffeine. The vast majority of Americans use drugs on a regular basis. People always have and always will.

2. Different people have different relationships with different drugs. My wife is someone who can enjoy an occasional cigarette and only smokes when she drinks. I am an addict who cannot control my cigarette problem. If I have one cigarette, I will end up smoking a pack a day. Some people have serious problems with alcohol and can't enjoy even a single drink. I can handle alcohol and enjoy a drink or two some nights, leave it alone on others, and I rarely have negative experiences with it. Different strokes for different folks.

3. People use drugs for joy and for pain. Many people enjoy using mind- and body-altering substances. How many of us enjoy having some drinks and going out dancing? How many of us enjoy a little smoke after a nice dinner with friends? Many people bond with others or find inspiration alone while high on drugs.

On the flip side, many people self-medicate to try to ease the pain in their lives. How many have us have had too much to drink to drown our sorrows over a breakup or some other painful event? How many of us smoke cigarettes to deal with anxiety or stress?

7. Drug abuse is bad, but the drug war is worse. Locking someone up in a cage for using marijuana or some other drug when no harm has been done to anyone else is cruel and inhumane. People who prohibit clean syringes to reduce the spread of HIV have blood on their hands. Denying financial aid to students who have a drug offense is counterproductive. Many of our country's laws are more harmful than the substances they are trying to combat.
