Phillip Toledano: Days With My Father

Photographers can sometimes try to hard to imbue their photos meaning. Not Phillip Toledano. Though he has previously produced series on a number of different subjects — phone sex, video gamers, the Arctic — his latest is a very personal photographic journey. After his mother passed away, Toledano began to take photos of his 97-year-old father with dementia, to keep, as he writes, “a record of my father, and of our relationship.” In his collection, “Days With My Father”, the images are powerful without being self-conscious, and the brief statements he writes next to some give us a glimpse into the deep character of the man he is capturing on film. It’s all the more heart-wrenching because you can see that man slipping away.

PHOTOS: Chile Volcano Erupts With Ash, Lava, Lightning

May 6, 2008—After 9,000 years of silence, Chile's Chaitén volcano (pictured on May 3) is erupting with lava, ash—and lightning (full story).

Since the volcano awoke on May 2, it has continued erupting intermittently, blanketing the area in ash and forcing more than 4,000 people to flee.

The little-understood storms may be sparked when rock fragments, ash, and ice particles in the plume collide to produce static charges—just as ice particles collide to create charge in regular thunderstorms. (More: "Volcanic Lightning Sparked by 'Dirty Thunderstorms,' Study Finds" [February, 2, 2007].)

The mingling of lightning and ash seen above may be a "dirty thunderstorm."

"I bought this expensive camera, but my pictures look Blah!" I have heard a variation of this expression many times. It usually comes from people who have recently upgraded to a digital SLR camera. With Christmas coming and many more photographers hoping to find a box of Digital SLR goodness under a tree, let me state my opinion on this subject as a cold, hard fact:

If you use a digital SLR camera, your images WILL require editing!

The camera's job is to record the scene accurately at a high level of quality. It is essentially creating a digital negative which then needs to be developed.

Notice how blah the file is.

I do the bare minimum of editing.

Cropping

Adjusting exposure

Levels

Vibrance and Saturation

Sharpening

If you are shooting a digital SLR, think of it this way: You capture the image with the camera, you develop the image with the software. A little bit of work with an editing program goes a long way in removing the BLAH.

For Deepti: Pink concert photos

clipper's remarks: Here you go Deepti. They're not much but these are my favourite ones. I took over 1100 photos of Naree, and ended up with just over 100 that I liked.

The lighting during Pink's part was much better and had only taken about 300 or photos but ended up with about 100 as well. I'm very proud of these photos! Best to click on the images. Much larger and clearer.

Okay, so I went to Dubai just to attend Pink's concert. Why? Why would I bother? It's because Naree (Becca) was the opening act. I've known Becca since she was about 8 or so. Her sister, Nina was in my class. It was great of Naree to get me a press pass to the concert so I could take photos.

I've seen Naree perform several times. But seeing her on the stage this time was something else. I felt so proud of her. When we were ushered to the press pit, I got a little teary as she greeted the crowd. Oh boy, did I ever take photos, and here are a few.*

I was ecstatic when she did the Carlton dance.

I don't understand what all the hype is about Dubai. It took ages just to get to the express way. And that was at 2 a.m.

*I know not many people read this, but for those who do stumble upon these photos, please do let me know if they're going to be used.
