The permanent display at the Shima Marineland Aquarium in the town of Shima includes a 96-tentacled Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) that weighed 3.3 kilograms (about 7 lbs) and measured 90 centimeters (3 ft) long when it was captured in nearby Matoya Bay in December 1998. Before dying 5 months later, the creature laid eggs, making it the first known extra-tentacled octopus to do so in captivity. All the baby octopi hatched with the normal number of tentacles, but unfortunately they only survived a month.

The preserved octopus actually has the normal number of 8 appendages attached to its body, but each one branches out to form the multitude of extra tentacles

believed to be the result of abnormal regeneration that occurred after the octopus suffered some sort of injury

most well-known specimen is an 85-tentacled Common Octopus captured in 1957 at nearby Toshijima island

Toba Aquarium has exhibited 6 other mutant octopi

most of them alive for a time

each with between 9 and 56 tentacles

Armpit Advertising A First

Armpits aren't exactly the most desirable location to stare and (not to mention the awful smell in a packed train during rush hour), but it is something most people cannot avoid when taking public transport. The advertising world has decided to take this particular lemon and make some lemonade by introducing a new concept that sees digital TV displays built straight into the armpits of shirts. This concept will be developed by deodorant manufacturer Right Guard, paving an interesting method to market its products. Of course, I would assume these displays will be waterproof since some of us tend to sweat it out a whole lot more in that particular body part.

You can find out more about Halsman here : www.temple.edu/photo/photographers/halsman/phbio.html and i fully reccomend looking at some more of his work - his collaborations with Salvador Dali were some of the most innovative work around.

And something to note - you could do this in photoshop now easily but Halsman did not - this was shot live. It took 26 tries to get it over five hours - Halsman counted to four, Dali leapt, 3 assistants threw the cats, one threw the water from a bucket and Halsman's wife held the chair. Its all done in the camera.

A Biblical Beard: Jacobs tried to follow every commandment in the Bible, including the one about avoiding the barber shop.

After A. J. Jacobs spent a year reading the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica for his book “The Know-It-All,” he figured he had the yearlong experiment thing down. How much harder could it be to follow every rule in the Bible? Much, much harder, he soon discovered, as he found himself growing his beard, struggling not to curse and asking strangers for permission to stone them for adultery. One cold, windy afternoon I stood on a street corner thinking uncharitable thoughts about the differences between men and women as I waited for my wife to pick me up. She was, at that moment, 15 minutes late, despite having called from her office to say that she was on the way and would be right there. "Why," I thought, "do so many women have such a vague attachment to the concept of on time"? There are those who argue that that’s not the case, that women don’t have a problem with being on time.

To them I offer as collateral argument, womens' watches. On a woman. a watch is jewelry first, and a timepiece second. Only women to whom time must matter, such as nurses, wear watches that you can really read. Most womens' watches are so small you have trouble telling it’s a watch, much less what time it is. If you see a watch like that on a woman, be prepared to spend time cooling your heels as you wait for her.

EYES WIDE SHUT

In 1947 Life Magazine asked some famous comic strip artists to to draw their famous characters while wearing a blindfold. The results are interesting; they sort of remind me of that famous nature film that I was shown in Health Class where they blew marijuana on a spider and then watched him make crazy freaked-out webs. I have to confess that I've not heard of half of these comic strips; However, for the sake of preservation I've scanned them all. In my opinion Chick Young's Dagwood and Chester Gould's Dick Tracy are the best, but Dixie Dugan's artist John Striebel seems like he wasn't even trying!
