Training kids to use the big potty is always a bit of a “crapshoot”, isn’t it. I was lucky that a high school girl at daycare was able to teach my kids in about two days — so I never had to mess with the details. But keeping them interested in sitting on the potty can be tricky!

Here’s a perfect toddler toilet training accessory - and why not let them learn two skills at once? Sit them on the seat. When they make their business bells and whistles go off with a jackpot sound. I wish I were kidding….and yeah, I’m still searching to see if there is an adult version. A perfect dinner party conversation piece.

It's designed to show the relationships between awesoments, and often one can even predict how awesoments interact simply by their positions on the table.

When you’re at San Diego Comic-Con, it’s nearly impossible to walk more than a few feet and not run into a fan in costume. Every year the convention center is flooded with various versions of superheroes, video game characters, horror film icons, pirates, steampunk kids, vampires, werewolves, manga and anime favorites, food mascots and of course lots and lots of Star Wars characters. Even though it seemed the Joker costumes dominated the con, the 501st and Rebel Legion were out in full force, as were fans dressed as Yoda, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, Jedi and even a couple of TIE Fighters.

Who says the guys should have all the fun dressing as Darth Vader? This was one of the best kids’ costumes of the convention. If Princess Leia went to the dark side, it might look a little like this. Who knew Sith Lords could be so darn cute?!

WHAT: An alarm clock that wakes you up with the smell and sizzle of cooking bacon.

WHY: No one likes to wake up, especially by an alarm. This clock gently wakes you up with the mouthwatering aroma of bacon, just like waking up on a Sunday morning to the smell of Mom cooking breakfast. Unless you're Jewish.

HOW: A frozen strip of bacon is placed in Wake n' Bacon the night before. Because there is a 10 minute cooking time, the clock is set to go off 10 minutes before the desired waking time. Once the alarm goes off, the clock it sends a signal to a small speaker to generate the alarm sound. We hacked the clock so that the signal is re-routed by a microchip that in responds by sending a signal to a relay that throws the switch to power two halogen lamps that slow-cook the bacon in about 10 minutes.

Phillip Toledano: Days With My Father

Photographers can sometimes try to hard to imbue their photos meaning. Not Phillip Toledano. Though he has previously produced series on a number of different subjects — phone sex, video gamers, the Arctic — his latest is a very personal photographic journey. After his mother passed away, Toledano began to take photos of his 97-year-old father with dementia, to keep, as he writes, “a record of my father, and of our relationship.” In his collection, “Days With My Father”, the images are powerful without being self-conscious, and the brief statements he writes next to some give us a glimpse into the deep character of the man he is capturing on film. It’s all the more heart-wrenching because you can see that man slipping away.

The permanent display at the Shima Marineland Aquarium in the town of Shima includes a 96-tentacled Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) that weighed 3.3 kilograms (about 7 lbs) and measured 90 centimeters (3 ft) long when it was captured in nearby Matoya Bay in December 1998. Before dying 5 months later, the creature laid eggs, making it the first known extra-tentacled octopus to do so in captivity. All the baby octopi hatched with the normal number of tentacles, but unfortunately they only survived a month.

The preserved octopus actually has the normal number of 8 appendages attached to its body, but each one branches out to form the multitude of extra tentacles

believed to be the result of abnormal regeneration that occurred after the octopus suffered some sort of injury

most well-known specimen is an 85-tentacled Common Octopus captured in 1957 at nearby Toshijima island

Toba Aquarium has exhibited 6 other mutant octopi

most of them alive for a time

each with between 9 and 56 tentacles

Armpit Advertising A First

Armpits aren't exactly the most desirable location to stare and (not to mention the awful smell in a packed train during rush hour), but it is something most people cannot avoid when taking public transport. The advertising world has decided to take this particular lemon and make some lemonade by introducing a new concept that sees digital TV displays built straight into the armpits of shirts. This concept will be developed by deodorant manufacturer Right Guard, paving an interesting method to market its products. Of course, I would assume these displays will be waterproof since some of us tend to sweat it out a whole lot more in that particular body part.
