Heat a skillet over medium heat. Butter one side of each slice of bread. On the non buttered side of one slice, layer the feta cheese, Cheddar cheese, red onion and tomato. Top with the other slice of bread with the butter side out.

Want to celebrate the predictable tragedy that your life has become by eating waffles shaped like the very instrument that invisibly shackles you to your desk? Artist Chris Dimino has modified an old typewriter to produce keyboard-shaped waffles perfect for honing those typing skills before you get to work. The waffle maker is just a one-off, but hopefully some geek-minded, breakfast-loving entrepreneur will get cracking on a retail version soon (make a pirate toaster while you're at it).

If you end up having to be the one that prepares it, pour some coffee, grab the newspaper, and hop back into bed for an hour once your breakfast is made. It's the weekend, no one will care, and besides - you worked hard all week so treat yourself!

We love breakfast food around here, and are certainly no strangers to some French Toast variations. One of my favorite recipes for the morning is Raspberry Chocolate French Toast, a little twist on the original.

For the French Toast:
2 eggs
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
4 slices white (or enriched) bread
Whip the first three ingredients together and dip each slice of bread in the egg mixture. Pan fry in a pat of butter over medium heat, ensuring that the egg is fully cooked on all sides of the bread.Filling:
Blend the following ingredients together:
1/4 cup cream cheese
1/4 cup raspberries, diced

Cut each slice of toast on the diagonal and spread the cream cheese mixture on one half. Top each slice with the other half of toast.

Garnish:
Top each "sandwich" with icing sugar and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Decorate with raspberries.

Tags: food, recipe, cooking, breakfast

<clipSource>http://www.slashfood.com/2007/01/27/chocolate-raspberry-french-toast/</clipSource>

What I did over Christmas vacation - hint: it involves candy.

clipped by: coconutshell
clipper's remarks: Don't I wish I could have done something that productive?

Clip Source: missedmanners.wordpress.com

I just wanted to share with you guys what I did over Christmas vacation. That’s it.

This past Christmas Vacation my brothers, sister, myself and my girlfriend built a scale replica of the battle of Helms Deep, from the second book of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Two Towers penned by the late, great, J.R.R. Tolkien. Here are some pictures:

This is the zoomed out view. The whole thing was constructed out of cardboard, glue, icing and… well, candy. It clocked in at about 7 feet long by 3 feet deep by 2 feet tall. We used over 500 Gummy Bears as orcs and Uruk-Hai. The Elves, Dwarves and Men were represented by sour patch kids. Most of these were of course corpses.

This is the reverse view. As you can see, my mom has a bitching rug. Also you can see that by this point the evil army of Saruman’s creation has broken through the wall and is streaming in for the sweet sweet sugary kill.

We made some siege machinery as well. The Catapults were Tootsie pops. Leaning against the Jolly Rancher wall is a siege tower made of other tootsie type stuff. There are some red licorice ropes as, well… rope.

Here you can see how skilled we are at cardboard mountain creation. Seeing this again almost makes me aroused at my own awesomeness. Notice the brutal carnage happening on the walls as the men and orcs battle.

Alas! The evil host is through the walls! And up the carefully crafted stairs of Starburst candies. Is there no end to their cruelty? The answer is most definitely NO, as you can see from the piles of dead men and elves. They are covered in the sweetest candy blood we could find (red Nerds and more licorice rope).

One last charge for glory. Theoden and Aragorn charge forth from the castle atop mighty steeds (gummy Target dogs), with mighty spears (toothpicks, not actually candy), into the teeming multitude of evil. I’m pretty sure they’re doing it for wrath and ruin, or something.

Tags: interesting, lord of the rings, entertainment, candy, food, sweets, holiday, vacation, art

<clipSource>http://missedmanners.wordpress.com/2007/01/12/what-i-did-over-christmas-vacation-</clipSource>

Banana Pancakes

clipped by: brios86
clipper's remarks: Looks gross but must taste good, otherwise why would Jack Johnson make a song with it as the title.

Clip Source: allrecipes.com

                                        1 egg, beaten

                                        1 cup milk

                                DIRECTIONS

Combine flour, white sugar, baking powder and salt. In a separate bowl, mix together egg, milk, vegetable oil and bananas.

Stir flour mixture into banana mixture; batter will be slightly lumpy.

Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Cook until pancakes are golden brown on both sides; serve hot.

It's exotic, colorful, and full of antioxidants, Vitamin C, polyphenols, and flavonoids. When I heard all this news, I bought a pomegranate the next time I was at the grocery store. I brought it home, cut it open, and then thought, "How do I eat this? I think something's wrong with my pomegranate."

Nope, that's what a pomegranate is supposed to be like. If you want to just chop the fruit in half and eat it with a spoon, go for it. But I should warn you that pomegranate juice stains, so be careful. If you're not wild about the the idea of being covered with red stains, here's how to remove the fruit and seeds without getting squirted.

First, cut off the crown of the fruit. Also cut the fruit as if you were quartering it, but instead of cutting all the way through just cut through the skin and a bit of the fruit underneath. Next, soak the whole fruit in a bowl of cool water for five minutes. While the fruit is still underwater, pull apart the four sections (that way the juice won't squirt on you.) Now, the rind and membrane will float to the top of the dish while the fruit-covered seeds will sink. Throw away the rind and membranes and pat the seeds dry. They're ready to eat!

Check out Nubella's article on pomegranates for more information on the new "it" fruit, including how to choose a good pomegranate at the supermarket.

Email this

Linking Blogs

Comments [0]

Tags: food, fruit, health, pomegranate, howto

<clipSource>http://www.thatsfit.com/2006/12/10/theyre-the-new-it-fruit-but-how-do-you-eat-a-pomegranate/</clipSource>

Holiday drinks - healthier than you thought.

clipped by: coconutshell
clipper's remarks: I think the eggnog's on the next page which I didn't get to clip. These four classics all contain ingredients with proven health benefits. How joyous is that?

Hot Cocoa

But not all hot chocolates are created equal, cautions Lauren Slayton, MS RD, a nutritionist in New York. The key is to use dark chocolate, which has the highest concentration of good stuff. Look for cocoa mixes that list dark chocolate as their first ingredient, or simply melt a bar of dark chocolate that contains at least 70% cocoa. To make your hot cocoa even healthier, make it with low-fat milk, which cuts fat and calories.

Mulled Wine

Red wine just can't get enough good press, so how lucky that it's found in several warm punch-like libations, including glogg and mulled wine. Studies have shown that powerful antioxidants found in grapes -- flavonoids and resveratrol -- have a bevy of benefits. They have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects that might help slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Resveratrol may also reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration, a painless eye disease that affects more than 10 million people in the U.S. It is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 55.

There's also evidence that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with lower death rates from heart disease. Wine can increase "good" HDL cholesterol and may lower the risk of heart attacks by modestly reducing the ability of blood clots to form in the heart.

Another recent finding, published in the December 2003 issue of the journal Cancer Research, showed that red wine reduces the activity of an enzyme called aromatase, which plays a role in breast cancer.

Apple Cider With Cinnamon

Cinnamon has been shown to improve glucose and cholesterol levels in the blood, which makes it particularly good for people with type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol.

Tags: health, holidays, drinks

<clipSource>http://www.webmd.com/solutions/healthy-holidays/drinks?page=1</clipSource>

Pumpkin-Ginger Cake w/Cinnamon-Bourbon Caramel Glaze

clipped by: dreamoo

Clip Source: www.hgtv.com

Pumpkin-Ginger Cake

If a cleaner flavor is desired, stand back and light the sauce so that the alcohol burns away.

GUESTS:
Dennis Stewart
