The main difference here, at least to me, is that in the "vintage" Mac/PC ad, the "PC" is actually a good-looking, vaguely Jude Law-ish character (he's got that "sinister Wall Streeter" look, it's very American Psycho) while the "Mac" pretty much looks like a pre-bust dotcom dweeb who would've fit right into a sidekick role on one of the corny sitcoms of the day. So, yeah, if I had to go out to dinner with one of these young fellers, I'd have to choose the well-groomed PC over the sloppy Mac who thinks he can look swanky by tucking his T-shirt into his jeans. Let's hope the intended "nerd/cool guy" dynamic of John Hodgman and Justin Long has better lasting power than that of the guys in this predecessor. Do you think Justin's garage-band haircut will one day look just as ridiculous as the '96 Mac's?

Tags: computers, apple, macintosh, pc, windows, technology, interesting, advertising, media

<clipSource>http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9689695-1.html?tag=permalink</clipSource>

Human-Powered Cursor

clipped by: coconutshell
clipper's remarks: The link (which I couldn't clip) is at the source...quite amusing for a few minutes...might be more amusing if it was the whole window..

Clip Source: www.uberreview.com

Human Powered Cursor

If it’s already leaning, it doesn’t require the italic tags (probably already in the stylesheet).

Well…I decided to try and top that. I picked the nice round number of 200 for a few different reasons. First and foremost because Firefox “2″ was recently released but also because back in August Mozilla celebrated 200 million downloads of the fantastic browser! Right now they are past 263 million but this is kinda like a belated celebration.

To install the extensions I went through the Mozilla Extension page one by one, like any normal person would be doing. I went through the top Firefox extension page until I had all 200 installed. I did install repetitive extensions (such as the three versions of Forecast Fox) because I wanted to see if they affected each other, but there weren’t too many extensions that overlapped in functionality. The only ones that I really skipped were the dictionaries which there happened to be quite a few of.

After I had installed 50 of them I decided to restart the browser to see how things were going. It took about one minute to startup but everything looked like it installed correctly. Then I moved on and after about an hour I had all 200 installed and was ready to restart the browser. I didn’t think that it was going to work but to my surprise it did…

It was quite a site to see and there was a very limited viewing area for websites because of the toolbars. On my 24″ widescreen monitor I had about 2″ of viewable area at the bottom of the browser. But hey, it was still usable. Here is a screenshot of the overall result of a Google search that I performed:

It is also pretty amazing what the Google website looks like when I have all of those extensions installed. Not to mention how funny it is when you type a search in the search box and press “Enter” just to see it replicate itself amongst all of the toolbars. That was probably my favorite part about the whole experience. ;)

Tags: firefox, internet, computers, extensions

<clipSource>http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/12/06/cybernotes-200-firefox-extensions-installed-at-one-time/</clipSource>

Best Geek Gifts

clipped by: coconutshell
clipper's remarks: Numbers 3-5 please....I know number 4's a little evil and borderline sadistic but I'm sure many would agree.

Clip Source: www.bbspot.com

href="http://clipmarks.com/clipper/coconutshell/">coconutshell
clipper's remarks: What I would like to do is challenge each and every one of you DCoTers to take a look through your older computer equipment and see if you can put together a system that could help out someone in need during the holiday. It may just be a “pile of junk” to you but it can make all the difference in the world to someone in need.

If you have ever done something like this or you plan to do something like this, I want to hear about it. Leave your Christmas Tech Miracle stories in the comments for all to read. Our church had decided to support them in various ways and they petitioned the congregation for help. Since they had literally nothing (They truly knew the meaning of “nothing but the cloths on their backs”), anything that we could give would be useful.

Wanting to help, I dug up the old computer that I had just replaced with a new system. I cleaned it up and talked with the local internet provider to see if they could provide them with free Internet access. They agreed to help.

At the Christmas Eve service, I pulled the father of the family aside and surprised him with the computer. I apologized that it was not the fastest or newest computer but it was reliable and worked well. He and his family were ecstatic! I offered to help set up the system but their oldest boy wanted to try by himself first. Soon after, they quit coming to our church and I never heard from them again until…

A few weeks ago, I received an e-mail from the father whom I gave the computer to. In the e-mail, he apologized for not sending me the e-mail earlier but he wanted to let me know how that computer changed their lives.

The first thing it did was get him his first job. He got a job translating documents but one of the requirements was that they have a computer at home do the work. The system allowed him to do that job!

The other thing it did was strike an interest in his oldest son (the one who wanted to set up the system). He was now attending university in the Computer Engineering field.

Tags: technology, computers, career, people, challenge, society

<clipSource>http://www.dailycupoftech.com/2006/11/30/christmas-needs-tech-support-too/</clipSource>

Belkin Flip

clipped by: coconutshell
clipper's remarks: I just read about this...has anyone tried it out?

Clip Source: www.belkin.com

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/coconutshell/512/7D5FB714-9A2B-40A0-A5BC-44354A0EFB5E.jpg" alt="Flip | Two computers.
One laptop. One desktop. One big monitor.

Laptops offer a great way to work - and play - almost anywhere. But sometimes you just don’t feel like sitting in front of a tiny display and cramped keyboard.

Thanks to Flip, you can now use your big monitor and full-sized keyboard for both your laptop and desktop computer.

Click. Flip.

It’s simple. Just place the remote anywhere on your desk and press to flip your monitor from one computer to the next.

Something old. Something new.

Flip is also great for connecting your old and new desktop computers, giving you instant access to files, programs, and games on both computers.
