"Dali Atomicus" by Philippe Halsman - 1948

You can find out more about Halsman here : www.temple.edu/photo/photographers/halsman/phbio.html and i fully reccomend looking at some more of his work - his collaborations with Salvador Dali were some of the most innovative work around.

And something to note - you could do this in photoshop now easily but Halsman did not - this was shot live. It took 26 tries to get it over five hours - Halsman counted to four, Dali leapt, 3 assistants threw the cats, one threw the water from a bucket and Halsman's wife held the chair. Its all done in the camera.

The shaved bumblebee

This image is telling about the bumblebee Bernard who wanted to impress his friends with an experiment.
It was one of these boring days and they were as usual looking for some nonsense to get involved in and
succeeded in switching on an electric shaver. And Bernard, for the first time in his life, completely freed
himself from his beautiful yellow and black fur. But then, under the shouting and cheering of his
mischievous friends, he watched in the mirror and had to recognize that the result didn`t please
him as much as he expected. But hey, it will grow again....

"I bought this expensive camera, but my pictures look Blah!" I have heard a variation of this expression many times. It usually comes from people who have recently upgraded to a digital SLR camera. With Christmas coming and many more photographers hoping to find a box of Digital SLR goodness under a tree, let me state my opinion on this subject as a cold, hard fact:

If you use a digital SLR camera, your images WILL require editing!

The camera's job is to record the scene accurately at a high level of quality. It is essentially creating a digital negative which then needs to be developed.

Notice how blah the file is.

I do the bare minimum of editing.

Cropping

Adjusting exposure

Levels

Vibrance and Saturation

Sharpening

If you are shooting a digital SLR, think of it this way: You capture the image with the camera, you develop the image with the software. A little bit of work with an editing program goes a long way in removing the BLAH.

What I did over Christmas vacation - hint: it involves candy.

I just wanted to share with you guys what I did over Christmas vacation. That’s it.

This past Christmas Vacation my brothers, sister, myself and my girlfriend built a scale replica of the battle of Helms Deep, from the second book of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Two Towers penned by the late, great, J.R.R. Tolkien. Here are some pictures:

This is the zoomed out view. The whole thing was constructed out of cardboard, glue, icing and… well, candy. It clocked in at about 7 feet long by 3 feet deep by 2 feet tall. We used over 500 Gummy Bears as orcs and Uruk-Hai. The Elves, Dwarves and Men were represented by sour patch kids. Most of these were of course corpses.

This is the reverse view. As you can see, my mom has a bitching rug. Also you can see that by this point the evil army of Saruman’s creation has broken through the wall and is streaming in for the sweet sweet sugary kill.

We made some siege machinery as well. The Catapults were Tootsie pops. Leaning against the Jolly Rancher wall is a siege tower made of other tootsie type stuff. There are some red licorice ropes as, well… rope.

Here you can see how skilled we are at cardboard mountain creation. Seeing this again almost makes me aroused at my own awesomeness. Notice the brutal carnage happening on the walls as the men and orcs battle.

Alas! The evil host is through the walls! And up the carefully crafted stairs of Starburst candies. Is there no end to their cruelty? The answer is most definitely NO, as you can see from the piles of dead men and elves. They are covered in the sweetest candy blood we could find (red Nerds and more licorice rope).

One last charge for glory. Theoden and Aragorn charge forth from the castle atop mighty steeds (gummy Target dogs), with mighty spears (toothpicks, not actually candy), into the teeming multitude of evil. I’m pretty sure they’re doing it for wrath and ruin, or something.

Saxton Freymann Gallery

Saxton Freymann is a New York artist who creates emotional animals completely out of produce. His art career began in painting, until 1997 when he paired up with publisher Joost Elfers. Freymann supplied Joost's need for "someone who could carve food beyond the rose radish table garnish". Freymann tried carving animals and discovered his new talent. By using an exacto knife, he turns bananas into octopi, a pear into a bear, or oranges expressing a variety of moods. He uses peppercorns or black-eyed peas for eyes, and beet juice or kernal corn for teeth. His inspiration comes from the produce isle. He claims each vegetable or fruit already has its own personality.

Fly Me To The Moon... A Visual Love Poem For Nico

Yesterday, Nico woke up in his flat in Split Croatia. On his closet door was a map created by his girlfriend, Andrea. The map showed different places for Nico to look as his took his usual route from his apartment to the academy where he studies.

What Nico found was an elaborate love poem done on the streets of Split by Andrea. She had put up stencils, paint, aerosol, collage wheat pastes etc. with last piece reading.... "i love you".
