Real iPhone killer - BlackBerry Storm

Here’s what we know about BlackBerry’s “Thunder” Storm - the 9500. It has a 3.25-inch TFT touch screen display with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution and an accelerometer for auto screen rotation. It has a 3.5mm earphone socket (thank you), microSD slot for external memory (8GB cards are good to go) and 1GB of internal storage to play around with. The 9500 also has a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera with an LED flash, a media player that supports DivX and XviD formats, internal GPS (with A-GPS) using Blackberry Maps, support for Stereo Bluetooth and USB v2.0. iPhone fans may vouch for its style, features and navigation, but what made the phone truly trend-setting is its touchscreen feature.

Spice Mobile launches Spice X-1 gaming phone in India

No wonder Sony Ericsson is interested in acquiring India’s Spice Mobiles. Their recently launched gaming phone, Spice X-1, looks like something the Swedish-Japanese handset maker may release in the not-that-distant future as part of its “F” series of mobile gaming friendly handsets.

Back to Spice X-1. It’s clearly a mobile phone designed to appeal to the youth audience who dig the idea of playing games on their handsets. It features a 2.4-inch screen, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, FM radio with record and play feature, and a microSD expansion slot. Being a gaming dedicated device also means it boasts a decent sound quality thanks to Yamaha-amplified 3-D surround sound technology, and dedicated gaming keys (like the Sony Ericsson F305).

Samsung TouchWiz now in India

Samsung Telecommunications India (STI), has announced the launch of its full touch screen, ultra-slim lifestyle segment mobile phone – the Samsung TouchWiz (F480)- in the Indian market.

The TouchWiz is being launched to coincide with the Olympic Games 2008.

Announcing the launch of this new phone, Sunil Dutt, Country Head, Samsung Telecommunications India, said, “Given the growing consumer interest in touch screen phones , the Samsung TouchWiz offers a brilliant full touch navigation experience; widgets with ‘Drag and Drop’ technology and User Interface with Haptic Feedback which makes the experience of using the phone highly interactive and easy.”

iPhone to be costliest in India

The much-awaited 3G iPhone is likely to cost a fortune in India, unlike in global markets, with Indian service providers unlikely to subsidise the gadget, like AT&T in the US and O2 in Germany.

Moreover, a fear of unlocking (cracking) and a likely flooding of counterfeit iPhones in the market are also likely to keep Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Essar — the two service providers – from subsidising the handset.

According to industry sources, prices of the latest iPhone (Version 2.0) would be at least double the amount of that in the US. The 8-gb version of the gizmo is likely to be priced between Rs 16,000 and 18,000, while the 16-gb would cost around Rs 24,000 to Rs 28,000 in the country.

As part of its strategy to consolidate its position in convergence field, mobile handset maker Nokia India on Wednesday announced the launch of new mobile phone ‘Nokia 6220 classic’ with 5 mega pixel camera.

“The new handset is designed as per the changing requirements of the mobile handset users,” Nokia India, Head GTM, Program Portfoilo, Raghuvesh Sarup said here on Wednesday. Priced at Rs 19,959, the new set is fitted with Xenon flash, autofocus, Carl Zesis optics and is A-GPS enabled which would allow sharing of photographs.

Nokia India has launched E71 and the slide-to-open E66 dedicated one-touch key models from their Eseries range.

The phones come fully equipped with the Mail for Exchange mobile email client to access emails.

The phones can also download attachments like Word, Excel, Powerpoint or PDF files directly and also support third party email solutions like Seven and Visto. The E71 measuring 114 x 57 x 10 mm, also enables users to edit MS Office documents.

MyScreen files patent for Mobile Advertising in India

Toronto-based MyScreen Mobile has continued to make significant moves in hopes of dominating the mobile advertising space. This time they have taken their technology to India and filed a patent application. Myscreen has filed patents for its technology in the USA, Canada and other parts of the world.

MyScreen recently secured a $10 million investment to grow the company in other countries and it seems like India is the first move. If you are unfamiliar with MyScreen, they are a permission and incentive-based advertising for your mobile phone. It allows mobile subscribers to be compensated for the advertising (images, text or video) that shows up on their device. Supposedly you’re in control of when, what and how the advertisements shows up and the payout is in cash, ring tones, extra air time, music downloads, and games.

iPhone price in India

Vodafone and Airtel started pre-registering customers for the iPhone 3G this week, and ever since, offices and blogs have been abuzz with discussions on what Apple’s much-awaited product will be priced at.

Many think it will be just a shade over Rs 8,000 — the rupee equivalent of the price in the US, which is $199. Now, that’s a fantastic price for the 8GB product, and will certainly have every competitor worried.

Nokia’s 8GB N95 smartphone , for instance, is priced at well over Rs 25,000, and its new N96 is expected to come at over Rs 36,000. But we think the iPhone, expected to hit the Indian market in September, will be priced substantially higher than Rs 8,000.

Nokia goes rural

Nokia has announced that it is taking up several initiatives as part of its strategy to address India’s rural market, which is seen as the next big opportunity for mobile service providers and handset makers.

The company’s strategy includes financing options to reduce up front costs for ownership of mobile phones in cost-sensitive rural markets. The company is working with a micro-finance agency to work out a financing package that will lower the entry cost for rural users, a Nokia spokeswoman said on Friday. Nokia is running pilots of this program in some rural markets, with a formal launch of the program likely soon, she added.

Nokia is also working with service and content providers to be able to deliver information such as agricultural prices and weather to people in rural areas.
