clipper's remarks: While I welcome the decision of a judge who will call it like he sees it in spite of constant and documented pressure from the Pentagon, I question the absence of things that were not said.

Mainly, if a threat is sufficient to constitute torture, how is the gauntlet of abuse detainees are subjected to by Gitmo interrogators not considered torture?

Judge tosses detainee confession citing torture

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba – A U.S. military judge barred the Pentagon Tuesday from using a Guantanamo prisoner's confession to Afghan authorities as trial evidence, saying it was obtained through torture.

Jawad, who was still a teenager at the time, is accused of injuring two U.S. soldiers with a grenade in 2002. He allegedly said during his interrogation in Kabul that he hoped the Americans died, and would do it again.

But Henley said Jawad confessed only after police commanders and high-ranking Afghan government officials threatened to kill him and his family — a strategy intended to inflict severe pain that constitutes torture.

Stevens faces long odds in Senate race

WASHINGTON – For most politicians, a guilty verdict on seven felony counts — eight days before an election — would guarantee the end of a political career.

But Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens is not like most politicians. After his conviction Monday on charges that he lied about free home renovations and other gifts from a wealthy oil contractor, the 84-year-old Stevens refused to drop out of his re-election race against Democrat Mark Begich.

While Begich has run a strong campaign, "Stevens has been blanketing the airwaves too," Shepro said. "Even though he's not here, he's had a lot of air time."

One of the most prominent of those colleagues, Republican presidential candidate John McCain, called Tuesday for Stevens to step down because he "has broken his trust with the people." The verdict, McCain said in a statement issued by his campaign, was "a sign of the corruption and insider-dealing that has become so pervasive in our nation's capital."
