Facebook has a worm. It was bound to happen: As the web increases in popularity, it was just a matter of time before security bad guys started targeting web applications in earnest. Recent research from IBM suggests that the pace of security vulnerabilities on the web is accelerating.

The worm spreads when a compromised user's account is used to send message to others with a title such as "LOL. You've been catched on hidden cam, yo:" and a link to a random URL. The linked website is a YouTube-like page that shows a video player along with what looks like a standard browser message to update your Flash installation. Clicking on the button begins a malware installation of a file called "codecsetup.exe."...

The worm uses the friend's picture to make it seem all the more legitimate. Once compromised, keylogging and the like kick in.

In other words, it's even worse than Facebook without the worm. :-)

When was it built?

The Eiffel Tower was constructed between 1887 and 1889.

Where is the Tower?

The Eiffel Tower is just south of the Seine river that flows through Paris, in the 7th Arrondissement (district). It is on a field called the Champ de Mars (field of the god Mars).

Why was it built?

It was constructed for a World's Fair entitled the Exposition Universelle, which commemorated the anniversary of the French Revolution.

How high is it?

300 meters or about 915 feet. The antenna is 24 meters high.

Who was Gustave Eiffel?

He was a French engineer of a family of German immigrants. His name was chosen after emigration to France because the French were having trouble with the family's original name, Boenickshausen. Eiffel comes from the river Eifel, which flows past the family original hometown.

Learning protects the brain

KEEPING mentally agile protects against dementia but until now no one has known exactly why. One possible reason was revealed at this week's annual Society for Neuroscience conference in Atlanta—at least, for rats. Thousands of new brain cells or neurons grow each day in the brains of rats and, presumably, in the brains of people, too. But only those animals that actively engage in learning get to keep the new cells. In their mentally lazy companions new cells die after a couple of weeks.

Until relatively recently, scientists thought that no new neurons grew in the brains of adults and that every blow on the head or glass of wine after adolescence cut the number of brain cells. Over the past decade, though, neuroscientists have realised that young neurons do continue to appear in the brains of mature mammals—but what they might do is only now being pieced together. Many of these new brain cells are found in the hippocampus, a structure used to remember events, people and places. This suggested to Tracey Shors, of Rutgers University in New Jersey, that the cells might be involved in forming such memories.
