Newer Gmail Accounts Getting Disabled?

There’s some trouble brewing over at Google’s Gmail support group as well as Digg.

Apparently some users cannot log into their Gmail accounts, with an error that says their Gmail account has been disabled. Judging from the number of replies in the thread, the number of affected accounts is considerable. The word is that only new Gmail accounts are affected, however this is hard to confirm at this point.

What’s worse, it seems that Google isn’t doing much about it at this point. “

One thing to keep in mind here is that Gmail is free, and the old proverb about getting what you paid for applies here. Also, Gmail’s terms of use clearly say that “Google also has the right to terminate your account at any time, for any reason, with or without notice.” Comforting, eh?

David Beckham announced this morning that he would no longer serve as England captain.

A visibly upset Beckham read his own statement, in which he stressed that he would continue playing for the England team for as long as he is selected.

The 31-year-old thanked former caretaker coach Peter Taylor for giving him the armband in November 2000 in a friendly against Italy, Sven-Goran Eriksson, his team-mates, the fans and the media.

He said that the decision to stand down was the most difficult of his life, but it was a conclusion he had reached prior to England's defeat to Portugal, saying: "I came to [this decision] some time ago, but I hoped to leave on the back of a successful World Cup. Sadly it was not to be."

He ended: "It has been an honour and privilege to captain my country. I have lived the dream. For that I will always be grateful."

Churchill lived in far more testing times than ours, but he always revered the ancient tradition of Britain's "unwritten constitution". I imagined him becoming flesh again and walking purposefully toward Downing Street - without security, of course - there to address Tony Blair and his aides on their sacred duty as the guardians of Britain's Parliament and the people's rights.

For Blair, that youthful baby-boomer who came to power nine years ago as the embodiment of democratic liberalism as well as the new spirit of optimism in Britain, turns out to have an authoritarian streak that respects neither those rights nor, it seems, the independence of the elected representatives in Parliament. And what is remarkable - in fact almost a historic phenomenon - is the harm his government has done to the unwritten British constitution in those nine years, without anyone really noticing, without the press objecting or the public mounting mass protests. At the inception of Cool Britannia, British democracy became subject to a silent takeover.

Go to any web page.

Click “MyPage” in your bookmarks/favorites.

A red rectangle with a question mark will appear in the top right of the window. You can now select/deselect page elements with your mouse and use key commands to affect them. (In case you forget the key commands, mouse over the red question mark for a guide)

When you’re done, hit [Esc] or reload the page or just go somewhere else.

Adobe Systems on Wednesday plans to release upgrades to its Flash Player software and Flex development tool for building Web applications.

Flash Player 9 for Windows and Macintosh, available as a free download, has been rewritten to improve the performance and "expressiveness," or interactivity, of Flash applications, said Sydney Sloan, group product marketing manager of Adobe's enterprise and developer business.

Sloan said Adobe will release a Linux version of Flash Player 9 but didn't specify a date.

In tandem with the Flash Player 9 release, Adobe is making its Flex 2 product line available, including a free, entry-level Flex 2 Software Development Kit meant to encourage development of more Flash applications.

The company's goal is to expand the audience of Flex developers from a few thousand to 1 million developers in the next three to five years, Sloan said.

Flex Builder 2, a commercial tool based on the Eclipse open-source framework, costs $499 per developer. The new version is designed to speed up development with pre-built components and take advantage of ActionScript 3.0, the latest version of Adobe's scripting language.

Adobe also has changed the licensing for Flex Data Services 2, server software for connecting to back-end applications. Customers can deploy an Express version of the software on single-processor servers for free. The higher-end version, Flex Data Services 2, costs $20,000 per processor.

Updating your computer is almost complete - Restart Now?

I just saw the following tip from Daniel Turini on CodeProject:

I found this after a lot of Googling, so I'd like to share the solution. Yep, this may not be new or even advanced but it surely helped me...

Anyone who is running Windows XP SP2 know what I'm talking about. That stupid, annoying, most ill-designed dialog box ever invented in the history of the computer science that asks "Updating your computer is almost complete. You must restart your computer for the updates to take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?"
And there are only two options: Restart Now/Restart Later. "Restart Later" means that this stupid thing will ask you again in 10 minutes. Yes, if you're willing to work for the next 4 hours until lunch before rebooting, this means you'll need to answer this question 24 times. Did I mention that the dialog steals the focus?

Now, to get rid of it:
Start / Run / gpedit.msc / Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update / Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations

You can configure how often it will nag you (I re-configured it for 720 minutes, which means I'll be asked twice on a work day), or completely disable it.

Oh, I almost forgot: this setting is only loaded when Windows starts, so a reboot is needed. If that stupid dialog is on your screen now, just stop the "Automatic Updates" service (but keep it as Automatic, so it gets reloaded on the next start) and you won't see it again.
