About 11,000 years ago a star in the constellation of Vela exploded. This bright supernova may have been visible to the first human farmers. Today the Vela supernova remnant marks the position of a relatively close and recent explosion in our Milky Way Galaxy. A roughly spherical, expanding shock wave is visible in X-rays. In the optical photograph shown here, the 100+ light-years span spherical blast wave is shown in detail. As gas flies away from the detonated star, it reacts with the interstellar medium, knocking away closely held electrons from even heavy elements. When the electrons recombine with these atoms, light in many different colors and energy bands is produced.

U-M researchers warn Gulf of Mexico 'dead zone' could grow

The New Jersey-size Gulf of Mexico "dead zone" will likely grow in coming years unless federal policies to control it change, in part because the demand for corn-based ethanol fuel will worsen the problem, University of Michigan scientists say.

The dead zone forms each spring off the Louisiana and Texas coast when oxygen levels drop too low to support most life in bottom and near-bottom waters. This summer the oxygen-starved zone swelled to 7,900 square miles, the third-largest Gulf of Mexico dead zone recorded since measurements began in 1985.

Fertilizer runoff from as far away as the Corn Belt is largely blamed for the annual low-oxygen, or hypoxic, event, which threatens the half-billion-dollar Gulf Coast fishery, says U-M researcher Donald Scavia.

"We understand what needs to be done, and the technology needed to do it is available," Scavia said. "All we really need is the political will and the funding."

Ten minutes of talking has a mental payoff

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Spending just 10 minutes talking to another person can help improve your memory and your performance on tests, according to a University of Michigan study to be published in the February 2008 issue of the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

"We found that short-term social interaction lasting for just 10 minutes boosted participants' intellectual performance as much as engaging in so-called 'intellectual' activities for the same amount of time," Ybarra said.

According to Ybarra, the findings suggest that visiting with a friend or neighbor may be just as helpful in staying sharp as doing a daily crossword puzzle.

The findings also suggest that social isolation may have a negative effect on intellectual abilities as well as emotional well-being. And for a society characterized by increasing levels of social isolation—a trend sociologist Robert Putnam calls "Bowling Alone"—the effects could be far-reaching.

Every morning Liz Bullard packs her son into the car and takes him on the school run.

Then after waving goodbye to him she sets off on the cat run.

Sgt Podge, a Norwegian Forest cat, is always waiting for her at exactly the same rendezvous point after a mysterious night on the tiles.

The 12-year-old cat has baffled his owner by wandering off every night from their home in Bournemouth, Dorset.

The next morning, he is always in the same place, on a pavement about two miles away.

the routine began five months ago, when Sgt Podge disappeared for four nights.

Mrs Bullard said: “He is always waiting in the same place at the same time. If it is raining I clap my hands and he appears from under a hedge.”

“He loves his ride home,” said Mrs Bullard.

Mrs Bullard also makes the trip at weekends and during school holidays.

On his return home, Sgt Podge has breakfast and spends much of the day asleep by a warm radiator, before setting out again.

“He is just a bit off the planet,” said Mrs Bullard.

Mr. Kline's statement bears review in light of the U.S. Senate's work on renewing Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). There is talk of granting immunity to the telecom companies involved in warrantless wiretapping. Why should AT&T, Verizon, and the like get away with trampling our constitutional rights? Furthermore, one would hope that Congress will stand-up to President Bush this time around. Let's put a stop to President Bush overstepping his executive powers.

Former AT&T technician Mark Klein has come forward to support the EFF's lawsuit against AT&T for its alleged complicity in the NSA's electronic surveillance.

Based on my understanding of the connections and equipment at issue, it appears the NSA is capable of conducting what amounts to vacuum-cleaner surveillance of all the data crossing the internet -- whether that be peoples' e-mail, web surfing or any other data.

Given the public debate about the constitutionality of the Bush administration's spying on U.S. citizens without obtaining a FISA warrant, I think it is critical that this information be brought out into the open, and that the American people be told the truth about the extent of the administration's warrantless surveillance practices, particularly as it relates to the internet.

unlike the controversy over targeted wiretaps of individuals' phone calls, this potential spying appears to be applied wholesale to all sorts of internet communications of countless citizens.

Former AT&T technician and wiretapping whistle-blower Mark Klein traveled to the nation's marble halls of power Wednesday, hoping to persuade lawmakers not to crush the lawsuit against AT&T that is largely based on his allegations that his former employer wiretapped the internet on behalf of the government.

Those documents detail how AT&T diverted portions of fiber optic internet cables, -included powerful snooping hardware and a fat fiber connection out of the room.

Even prior to the Senate Intelligence committee's assent to the president's push for immunity for the telecoms, Klein believed that Congress was helping the administration cover up the spying, according to an interview with Wired News in May.

Klein's stated intent for the visit is to stop Congress from giving immunity to well-connected telecom firms that the administration and its platoon of consent manufacturers say are being treated unfairly.
