Long ago, there was apparently a "sign rivalry" between Mannion's in Clifden, Hamilton's in Leenane, and Paddy Coyne's in Tullycross, all of which were not only pubs but general merchants and undertakers. Mannion's traded under the slogan "For All Your Needs, from Maternity to Eternity". So, Hamilton's went one better: "For All Your Needs, from Womb to Tomb". Paddy Coyne and Sons thought hard, and eventually settled on their own slogan. "Paddy Coyne's - For All You Wish For, from Erection to Resurrection."

Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that there's storytelling going on here.

AROUND EIGHT O'CLOCK, it starts to get crowded. I've been sitting here, with my bottle of Miller and my Newsweek, for quite a while. In this Connemara pub, I couldn't look more like a blow-in if I had orange ears and five eyes.

But that doesn't matter. I know, because I've been coming to Paddy Coyne's in Tullycross for years, sitting by the fire in the cosy front room. I still smile when I see the sign over the bar: "No Credit Given to Women" (beside it there is one that reads simply, "No Credit"). Wednesday is the best night here.

Outside, there is a small blackboard with "Smoking Area" chalked on to it, and a sign pointing towards the "Beer Garden". Tonight, however, there is no beer garden. Under the hanging baskets and the old beer ads, there is a stage.

Other legends regarding the origin of "King Puck" relates to the time of Daniel O'Connell, who in 1808 was an unknown barrister. It seems that before that year, the August fair held in Killorglin had been a toll fair, but an Act of the British Parliament empowered the Viceroy or Lord Lieutenant in Dublin to make an order, at his own discretion, making it unlawful to levy tolls at cattle, horse or sheep fairs. Tolls in Killorglin at this time were collected by the local landlord - Mr Harman Blennerhassett - who had fallen into bad graces with the authorities in Dublin Castle and as a result the Viceroy robbed him of his right to levy tolls. It is related that while the "Roundheads" were pillaging the countryside around Shanara and Kilgobnet at the foot of the McGillycuddy Reeks, they routed a herd of goats grazing on the upland. The animals took flight before the raiders, and the he-goat or "Puck" broke away on his own and lost contact with the herd. While the others headed for the mountains he went towards Cill Orglain (Killorglin) on the banks of the Laune. His arrival there in a state of semi exhaustion alerted the inhabitants of the approaching danger and they immediately set about protecting themselves and their stock.

The gnome population of Britain is in crisis according to a new report published exclusively in the Null. If nothing is done, the report's authors warn, gnomes could vanish from the British countryside all together.

"Having enjoyed relative protection and prosperity for the last two hundred years, the UK gnome population is in freefall," says Holly Larchlike, one of the scientists involved. "We are calling for urgent action to protect these helpless, rosy-cheeked denizens of Middle England."

Aboriginal Rock Art at Risk

July 25, 2008 -- Australia's greatest ancient Aboriginal rock art is at risk of being damaged or destroyed because it sits at the epicenter of the country's resources boom, experts say.

The etchings of men and animals on the rocks of the Burrup Peninsula, some of which are believed to be up to 30,000 years old, lie in Western Australia's remote and mineral-laden Pilbara region.

Images carved onto the red rocks scattering the landscape include kangaroos, lizards and emu tracks as well as the extinct native Tasmanian tiger which died out on the mainland 6,000 years ago.

Among the most significant panels are those showing human faces and activities and what experts believe are mythical figures.

"One of the pictures is depicting movement, is showing a man climbing a tree; probably to go hunting a possum or something like that," says archaeologist and anthropologist Sue Smalldon.

"The depiction of movement is quite rare in historic art around the world."

Latin American beats had been joined with flamenco by gitanos since at least the 1950s, mixing complex strumming with rhythmic, percussive tapping on their guitars' tops. The new Reyes generation — soon to meet and join up with three guitar-playing brothers from the Baliardo family — began creating more pop-oriented songs. They played at roma parties and at street corners until they got their chance to record under the group's new name, Gipsy Kings.

Sharp-eyed individuals might have noted that all the left-handed members of the group play guitars strung upside-down; this is usually as a result of the individuals' not having their own guitars when growing-up. Borrowing and playing a right-hander's the wrong way up was the only way to learn.

Gipsy Kings

Gipsy Kings are a group from Arles and Montpellier (specifically from a cité outside of Montpellier called Phobos) in France. Their parents fled from Spain during the Spanish Civil War. They are Roma musicians, best known for bringing Rumba Catalana, a pop-oriented version of traditional flamenco music to worldwide audiences. Their music has a particular Rumba Flamenca style, with pop influences; many songs of the Gipsy Kings fit social dances, such as Salsa and Rumba. Their music has been described as a place where "Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk".^[1]

They explained the evolution of their sound in the 1996 PBS documentary of their lives and music "Tierra Gitana (Gipsy Ground)". Young brothers Nicholas, Canut and Paul Reyes accompanied their father, famed flamenco singer Jose Reyes, who started out singing "cante jondo (deep song)", traditional flamenco with long-running themes of passion, love, death, etc.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms.......

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out very many eyes.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants &children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we we re back when the streetlights came on.

Chocolate Cake In 5 Minutes!

Ingredients:

4 Tablespoons cake flour
4 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoons cocoa
1 Egg
3 Tablespoons milk
3 Tablespoons oil
1 Mug

Instructions:

Mix flour, sugar and cocoa:

Spoon in 1 egg

Pour in milk and oil, and mix well

Put in microwave for 3 minutes on maximum power (1000watt)

Wait until it stops rising and sets in the mug

Tip contents out of mug onto saucer and enjoy!
