Olympic torch lit in Olympia

The Olympic torch has been lit today in front of the Temple of Hera on the historic grounds of Olympia, in the birthplace of Olympism, where the Ancient Olympic Games took place. The flame was lit successfully by a Holy Priestess, according to the traditional ritual, using the sun's rays and a parabolic mirror.

Following the mythical lightning, the priestess entered the Ancient Olympic Stadium with the torch and handed it over to the first runner of the Beijing 2008 Torch Relay. The young man passed by the tomb where Pierre de Coubertin's heart is buried, to launch the long journey of harmony of this Relay. The torch will be crossing five continents and stopping in 21 cities around the world before reaching China, where it will stop in over 100 places. On 8 August, it will enter the Olympic Stadium in Beijing during the Opening Ceremony to light the Olympic cauldron.

Protest as Olympic torch is lit

(CNN) -- A lone protester managed to breach the tight security during the Olympic torch lighting ceremony in Greece Monday.

The camera cut away from the scene until the protester had been removed.

The torch was lit moments later as it began its epic began its 130-day, 137,00 km (85,000 miles) journey.

The Olympic torch It will go from the site of ancient Olympia in Greece to Beijing, China, where the 2008 summer games will begin in August.

The mammoth trip is the longest ever in Olympic history.

The flame was lit by focusing the sun's rays on a concave steel mirror at the ruins of the Temple of Hera in Olympia.

Greek actress Maria Nafpliotou, portraying the High Priestess, lit the first torch. Alexandros Nikolaidis, a Greek athlete who won a silver medal in taekwondo at the 2004 Olympics, then carried the flame for the first mile.

This Rays' 'sailboat' stadium looks pretty cool

Don't adjust your monitors, people. Pictured above is a rendering of the Rays' proposed $450 million waterfront stadium in St. Petersburg. The photos of this plan have been available for some time, but the team just released this image yesterday, which features the park with the roof in the "closed" position. As you can tell from the photo, translucence is king. And after seeing those Lindsay Lohan photos in New York magazine, I have to ask: Who doesn't love translucence?

The roof is supposed to resemble a sail and I suppose it does. But it also kinda looks like a kids' pillow fort. Not to mention that the long post in the outfield originally reminded me of Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

This design would make the Florida swing worth it, though.

Now if only they could figure out how to equip it with A/C.

UPDATE: Getting plenty of e-mails and comments about how it looks like a spaceship or jet taking off. Can't say I disagree.
