1. In Case of Emergency - The worldwide Emergency Number for mobiles is 112. Even if you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and you dial 112, the mobile will search any existing networks to establish the emergency number for you. Lock Your Keys in the Car? - If your car has a remote lock/unlock device (and you have a second one, say at home - aside from the one on your keychain that's locked inside the car) you can call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone, hold your phone about a foot from your car door, and have the person at home press the unlock button on the device, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other remote for your car, you can unlock the doors.

3. Secret Battery Power - Imagine your cell battery is very low, you are expecting an important call, and you don't have a charger. Nokia phones come with a reserve battery. To activate it, press the keys *3370#. Your cell will restart with this reserve, and show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

4. Disabling a Stolen Phone - To check your mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #. A 15-digit serial code will appear on the screen. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. If your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.

A survey comparing the childhood experiences of mothers and fathers with their own children has prompted fears that this generation is growing up faster than any other in history.

It found that children today stop believing in such things as elves, goblins and fairies around the age of six, whereas their parents mostly held on to such beliefs until the age of 10.

More than 60% of parents try to get their children to read literature above their reading rates, according to the survey of 4,000 parents of pre-teen children.

A separate report released from the Institute for Public Policy Research supported the notion that pushing children too hard at a young age can backfire.

Academic results themselves do not ensure a higher income, and too much focus on them can inhibit social development and confidence, it said.

The survey of comparative childhood experiences was conducted for the Cartoon Network children's channel. It found that academic pressures were cutting into leisure time, with 85% of parents saying they arranged extra-curricular educational activities for their children.

There were 35% of parents who said their children spent at least half an hour a night on homework and revision.

"Although sustaining a fantasy world of fairies, goblins, elves and cartoon heroes may not seem worthwhile to some more serious-minded parents, it has a surprisingly significant impact on a child's development."

The IPPR study released today was based on surveys from people born in 1958 and 1970 and found that personal and social skills - like communication, self-esteem, planning and self-control - became 33 times more important in determining earnings between the two generations.

The report also recommended a ban on advertising through television, newspapers and mobile phones aimed at primary schoolchildren.

It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail.

They are putting forward the theory that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to one of the more bizarre mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the abrupt disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last week, some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which started in the US, then spread to continental Europe - was beginning to hit Britain as well.

The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving species from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back this up.

The West Coast is thought to have lost 60 per cent of its commercial bee population, with 70 per cent missing on the East Coast.

Two Spanish youths treated for mobile phone addiction

Two students aged 12 and 13 are being treated for an addiction to mobile phones at a psychiatric centre in northeastern Spain, the Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported on Saturday.

"They came for their addiction to 'Messenger' (the Internet messaging system) but we saw that they also had a mobile phone addiction," Maite Utges, the director of the Lleida's child and adolescent mental health centre, was quoted as saying in the online edition of El Mundo.

The two youths had owned mobile phones for a year and a half and spent an average of five to six hours a day on them.

The parents of the two said their children used their phones with a total lack of control, which contributed to their failure in school studies, said Utges.

It is "not easy" to undo this habit and treatment for the two will take at least two years, Utges added.

The Spanish government anti-drug agency estimates 10 percent of adolescents in Madrid suffer from an addiction to their mobile phone or to the Internet,

Personally, i have no issue with sex before marriage as long as both are consenting and mature enough to understand the ramifications physically, psychologically & socially.

In William Shakespeare's play, "Romeo and Juliet," the titular star cross'd lovers fatefully decide to pursue their love, despite the chaos and war unfolding around them. Their decision ends up being a fatal one. I suppose the ironic question that some people might want to ask the protagonists is: Out of all the wo/men in the world, couldn't you have picked another one?

When I was a freshman in college, I remember reading in my Intro Psych textbook about "The Romeo and Juliet Effect." Essentially, it's an example of Psychological Reactance, whereby rules and restrictions actually make you more prone to resist them. In the case of "The Romeo and Juliet Effect," the theory goes that your parents' disapproval can actually spur your affections towards that person. I'm guessing many of us have experienced this ourselves; certainly the image of the attractive and sexy rebellious male teen is one that has been ingrained into our popular culture.

Say goodbye to one of the last remaining phone-free havens.

Emirates Airlines is outfitting its planes with technology that will allow passengers to use their mobile phones in flight. The system went into effect for the first time this week on an Airbus A340 flight between Dubai and Casablanca. Emirates is partnering on the project with AeroMobile, which has developed technology that allows cellular phones to work at a low-enough level that they don't risk interfering with a plane's other systems. Emirates is shelling out $27 million to roll the system out fleetwide.

The airlines have been threatening to do this for years. American Airlines has tested technology developed by Qualcomm, and Air France and bmi have also experimented with the in-flight calls.

Depending on your point of view, this is either a great step forward, or just another reason to dread boarding an airplane.

Polish man wakes up to new world after 19 years in coma

A Pole who spent 19 years in a coma has woken up and will now have to adapt to a country where the communists are no longer in power, a television station announced Friday.

Railwayman Jan Grzebski fell into a coma after he was hit by a train in 1988, the private channel Polsat said.

In an interview, Grzebski said that he owed his survival to his wife, Gertruda.

"She's the one who always took care of me. She saved my life," he said.

Grzebski was a father of four at the time of the accident. He is now making the acquaintance of 11 grandchildren.

Doctors had not expected Grzebski to survive, let alone emerge from the coma.

"I cried a lot, and I prayed a lot. Those who came to see us kept asking: 'When is he going to die?' But he's not dead," said Getruda.

Poland's communist regime was still clinging onto power when Grzebski had his accident

A group at the UW has developed software that for the first time enables deaf and hard-of-hearing Americans to use sign language over a mobile phone.

Computer science doctoral student Anna Cavender, who learned sign language after joining the MobileASL group, demonstrates the device. Users can hold the phone in front of them and sign with one hand, but most people prefer to set the phone on a table and sign with both hands.

This is the first time two-way real-time video communication has been demonstrated over cell phones in the United States
