British men on the other hand, it would seem, are on the run from female liberation in the UK. All the men I speak to about their other halves said they found the quiet strength and femininity of the Russian women preferable to their pint-downing, man-eating British counterparts.

"Russian women are stronger," says Glaswegian David. His Russian wife tells me this stems from perestroika times, when women went out to win the bread leaving their men at home, where they hit the booze. Whether the new economic stability will break them from such a spell is as yet uncertain. But in the meantime, foreign bachelors will have to cater for domestic demand, and it’s the British who seem to be plugging the gap.

While in the realm of political rhetoric Britain and Russia seem to be renewing old rivalries, relations on the ground have never been better. The global market is finally coming to Moscow, and when it comes to husbands, Russian women have started buying British.

Sitting with Yorkshireman Jonathan and his newly-wedded Muscovite wife, Alexandra, I begin to understand why. Over borscht and fish and chips, she explains: "In Britain, all the blokes are gorgeous and the girls are ugly. Here all the women are beautiful and the men are useless." Though I’m not sure it is quite that straightforward, there may be an element of truth in it.

NASA has revealed that some of its satellites are being used to trace lost cats in urban neighbourhoods.

The news was broken following weeks of increased satellite activity, which has been logged by amateur astronomy bloggers.

NASA has chosen to break the news now rather than risk a national scandal. “It’s important to note that we are using redundant satellites for this purpose, but at no point is the safety of the globe at risk”, a spokesperson stated.

Local veterinary groups are hiring the technology to track special chips that are routinely put into new pet cats to prevent theft. The satellites can pinpoint the animal to the nearest metre, allowing them to be located and reunited with their owners.

“It means a hell of a lot to the owners and helps save lives”, said Malcolm Fisher, head veterinarian at the Mount Simba Animal Hospital. “There are so many satellites up there; it’s just a question of which one we log into at the time.”

The designer of this snooze-machine was a banker who came up with the idea after finding his colleagues asleep in bathrooms and store cupboards. He knew that there must be a better way of cat-napping on work time and he came up with the Energy Pod. The Japanese originally paved the way for power-napping through the invention of the capsule hotel; however, it simply took too much time to get to the hotel and back, and it eventually found its market in those who had partied too hard and had missed their last train home.

City workers regularly couple this daily slog with a ‘work hard, play even harder’ attitude, so it comes as no surprise that sleep gets left on the backburner. Well, droopy-eyed bankers need miss their shut-eye no more, because power-napping on the Energy Pod has been given the green light by several UK companies.

The Energy Pod is essentially a souped-up dentist’s chair with a huge dome at the head end. It is designed to isolate you from your stressful environment by enveloping you with lights and music while you sleep.
