When Sarah Lavely gets angry, she likes to break things. Not all the time, but on days when everything seems to be going wrong, she has been known to throw some plates against a wall. Fortunately, she has an easy outlet: Lavely is the founder of Sarah's Smash Shack, a San Diego shop where customers pay to smash tableware like dinner plates, wine glasses, intricately lined sashimi plates, brightly colored vases and goblets.

The store's pristine white shelves are filled with china just waiting to be broken.

The smashing is done in special soundproofed "break rooms" where customers - outfitted in coveralls, boots, gloves and a helmet - stand behind a chest-high barrier and hurl breakables at a stainless steel-covered wall. All the broken glass is donated to schools and art programs throughout the region.

"During my divorce," she says, "I broke a lot of stuff on my driveway."

That was when the idea for the Smash Shack came to her.

Computers Should Scan Palms, Eyes, Chertoff Suggests

In the near future computers should make users scan their palms and retinas before letting them in, Homeland Security Department chief Michael Chertoff suggested Wednesday.

Passwords and Social Security numbers are already antiquated, so easily stolen or cracked that they're virtually useless as security measures, Chertoff said during a roundtable discussion with bloggers in downtown Washington, D.C.

Internet users need a "paradigm shift" in the way they think about personal and corporate security, said Chertoff, who as a Justice Department lawyer in 2001 helped design the bundle of counterterrorism measures that became known as the Patriot Act.

"It's another initiative we've talked about," he said.

"I'm suggesting we paradigm-shift," he said.

A young fellow was about to be married and was asking his grandfather about sex. He asked how often you should have it.

His grandfather told him that when you first get married, you want it all the time ...and maybe do it several times a day.

Later on, sex tapers off and you have it once a week or so.

Then as you get older, you have sex maybe once a month. When you get really old, you are lucky to have it once a year..... maybe on your anniversary.

Things like approving torture, holding prisoners in jail for years and years -- indefinite detention -- deprived of all legal rights, not allowed to communicate with their families who might not even know where they went, deprived of visits even from the Red Cross.

It's one step at a time. It's doing things like this we've never done before -- war crimes. First to foreigners, then it seeps into doing it to your own.

Easily done, next, one candidate for Congress arranges to get another candidate for Congress put on the list. Someone in office doesn't like someone: Put him on the list, etc.

Spy on nun's because they're against the death penality. Spy on other political views you don't like - even though the people involved Have Absolutely Nothing To Do With Violence or Terrorism.

LOS ANGELES - A homeless man died after being doused with gasoline and set on fire on a street where he had lived for many years and was a familiar face to residents of Koreatown, police and local merchants said Friday.

Police were called to Third Street west of downtown Thursday evening and found the man, who was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A man in his 20s was seen throwing gasoline on the man, chasing him, throwing more on him and running from the scene, said Deputy Chief Sergio Diaz. Scorch marks stained a wall Friday where the man was burned.

"To murder somebody who's probably suffering from mental illness issues and not bothering anyone — just a poor wretch on the street — you've got to be a soulless nitwit to do something like this," he said.

A German farmer who received the world's first complete double arm transplant said Wednesday that incredulity gave way to joy when he woke from surgery to discover he had arms again.

Merk is recovering well and can perform simple tasks such as opening doors and turning lights on and off. His ultimate goals are to eat and dress himself—and ride a motorcycle.

A total of 40 surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other support staff carried out the 15-hour operation on July 25-26 to graft the donor's arms on to the body of Merk, who lost his own just below the shoulder in a combine harvester accident.

There is also still a risk that Merk's immune system will react, though doctors said so far there was no sign of them being rejected.

The trio of massive earthen mounds rising from the banks of north Georgia's winding Etowah River are monuments of a great prehistoric North American culture. The tallest, which stands higher than a six-story building above the surrounding grassy plain, is one of the largest structures ever built by the Mississippian societies that dominated much of the land from eastern Oklahoma to northern Florida from about A.D. 1000 to 1500. At Etowah, as at other Mississippian sites, the mounds were used for a variety of purposes: platforms for buildings, stages for ceremonial events, and cemeteries for the communities' elite.

In the shade of the trees where they have been picking olives all morning, in this wadi, south-east of Nablus, a Palestinian farmer, Jamal Otman Koarik, and two of his daughters share a lunch of home-baked bread, zatar, oil, courgettes and salad with three visitors. It's a bucolic scene that could have happened any time in the past century. But what makes it notable in 2008 is that the guests who have been helping Mr Koarik pick the olives are Israeli Jews: a rabbi, an anthropologist and a youth worker, Hellela Siew.

Asked why he and his volunteers make this often risky mission each year, the US-born rabbi says "if we really believe" the Biblical text that all human beings are made in God's image, "we have got to put our money where our mouth is and be here in an active way to defend human rights". And he also cites the "dialogue of the olive groves" in which Israelis and Palestinians who "have to live and die here together" have "no choice but to communicate"
