Scientists are reporting evidence that intact, double-stranded DNA has the “amazing” ability to recognize similarities in other DNA strands from a distance. And then like friends with similar interests, the bits of genetic material hangout or congregate together. The recognition — of similar sequences in DNA’s chemical subunits — occurs in a way once regarded as impossible, the researchers suggest in a study scheduled for the Jan. 31 issue of ACS’ Journal of Physical Chemistry B.

This recognition may help increase the accuracy and efficiency of the homologous recombination of genes — a process responsible for DNA repair, evolution, and genetic diversity. The new findings thus may shed light on ways to avoid recombination errors, which underpin cancer, aging, and other health problems.

“Amazingly, the forces responsible for the sequence recognition can reach across more than one nanometer of water separating the surfaces of the nearest neighbor DNA,” said the authors.

Sinaloa

Seafood is wrapped into tamales all along Mexico's Pacific coast.

Nayarit

South of Sinaloa, in the state of Nayarit, shrimp tamales may be filled with fresh or dried shrimp, often accompanied by roasted tomatillos, onions, garlic, chiles, cilantro and pineapples; ground chilacate or guajillo peppers and shrimp powder is traditionally added to the dough.

Michoacán

Instead of being wrapped around fillings, the masa itself is made with the traditional doblecrema (a creamy, salty cheese), and roasted poblano pepper strips; a variety of other ingredients may be mixed in. Most of the spice comes from the simple green sauce of tomatillos and hot chile peron.

Oaxaca

Tree lover brings out the chopper

A NEIGHBOURHOOD battle reached new heights yesterday when a Hawthorn resident paid $8000 to have a tree flown into his back yard by helicopter.

And Graeme Alderman plans to send the bill to the bloke over the back fence.

He says his neighbour cut down his old tree.

Mr Alderman said that the neighbour took the liberty of pruning the original 10.5m lilly pilly he planted 25 years ago down to a leafless 2.5m stump.

"He couldn't possibly have thought it was his. It was about 1.8m-2m into my block.

Not wanting to wait 25 years to regain his privacy, Mr Alderman called in Speciality Trees to deliver an established tree.

"It was pretty special. We hadn't organised a helicopter tree drop before," said project co-ordinator Ben Scoble, of Speciality Trees.

The 4.5m weeping lilly pilly cost $3000 to buy, $4000 to fly and $1000 to plant.

It will fill a gaping hole left by an allegedly overzealous new man on the block.

FRENCH scientist Joseph Browning revealed today that a team of experts would arrive in the city to take samples from the spider.

They will get close to the creature by abseiling 50m down the side of the Concourse Tower.

He said the spider would be lit up because it is hibernating, and said scientists were concerned that the creature could start laying eggs which is why they want to keep it under constant surveillance.

He told the ECHO: "Imagine 200 eggs, 1,000 times bigger than normal and you can just imagine the catastrophe"

I have been asking a series of questions about self-sabotaging behaviors. The vast majority of the replies have been constructive and incredibly helpful. But there is one type of reply that is truly self-sabotaging and gives me pause – it involves a gratuitous insult of some kind. When I try to point out that the insult is counter to their interests the person tends to respond with more insults. In a recent exchange, when I asked for clarification of a response I received “If you don’t understand what I mean, then that is probably your problem.” When I pointed out that I found his reply mildly insulting I received “you think you know me enough to think that I am insulting you, which I am not” – as if to say “you don’t get to decide when you feel insulted, I do”.

The importance of that discovery grows when we realize that it took the West a thousand years to develop the cathedral bell, and we didn't have it until the middle ages. Bells are very hard to make, yet China had these remarkably sophisticated Zhong bells during the Golden Age of Athens. The bells produce a rich tone, they take far less bronze to get it than a cathedral bell, and then they deliver two sounds for the cost of one.

It's easy to look right at something that's very sophisticated without seeing the sophistication. It took us eighty years to catch on to these remarkable, but unassuming, bells. The best inventions are like that. In the best inventions, elegance masquerades as simplicity.

Just after the turn of this century, archaeologists started finding curious sets of bronze bells in tombs throughout China. They range from 2000 to 3600 years old, and they have an odd shape.

They're called Zhong bells. Thousands of these bells had been unearthed by the late 1970s, and their strange secret still hadn't yet come to light.

The secret was actually seen and missed in 1957 when the National Music Research Institute in China played a set of these bells in concert.

The E-bell was missing in one octave. But then a player found he could get that sound by striking the C-bell on its side.

But twenty years later, Chinese musicologists, examining a set of these bells, discovered that every bell in the set had the same property -- it had two tones, either a third or a minor third apart. Then they found that many of these bells even had marks on the side to show players where to strike the bells to get the two tones. Each bell was, in fact, meant to be two bells in one.
