The news came suddenly. One morning I got word, and by the end of the day I was gone from the premises.

Within hours of getting home, I reached out to people I knew -- friends, associates, recruiters, former colleagues and clients. Almost everyone lent some support: a lead, a reference, an offer of office space or a freelance gig, a kind word. Along the line, I reconnected with Peter. I'd known him for 15 years; we'd once worked closely together and over the years had stayed in touch, though mostly by phone.

But Peter would hear none of it. Day in and day out, he doled out pep talks laced with hard-won wisdom. Talent always rises, he said. Hold yourself accountable to your goals. After you've done all you can, do more.

Now, none of this might be all that unusual, except for this: Peter had cancer.

Tags: inspiring, attitude, gratitude, recession

<clipSource>http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122783270019463061.html</clipSource>

Glaciers in Norway Growing Again

clipped by: amgumen

Clip Source: www.dailytech.com

After years of decline, glaciers in Norway are again growing, reports the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate

The flow rate of many glaciers has also declined. Glacier flow ultimately acts to reduce accumulation, as the ice moves to lower, warmer elevations.

The original trend had been fairly rapid decline since the year 2000.

DailyTech has previously reported on the growth in Alaskan glaciers, reversing a 250-year trend of loss. Some glaciers in Canada, California, and New Zealand are also growing, as the result of both colder temperatures and increased snowfall.

Despite the recent growth, most glaciers in the nation are still smaller than they were in 1982. However, Elvehøy says that the glaciers were even smaller during the 'Medieval Warm Period' of the Viking Era, prior to around the year 1350.

<clipSource>http://www.dailytech.com/Glaciers+in+Norway+Growing+Again/article13540.htm</clipSource>

The Most Mysterious Manuscript: The Voynich or Cipher Manuscript

clipped by: JohnWaterman

Clip Source: beinecke.library.yale.edu

TITLE:

Voynich bought a number of
mediaeval manuscripts from an undisclosed location in Europe.
Among these was an illustrated manuscript codex of 234 pages,
written in an unknown script.

Voynich took the MS to the United States and started a campaign to have it
deciphered.
Now, almost 100 years later, the Voynich manuscript still stands as
probably the most elusive puzzle in the world of cryptography.
Not a single word of this 'Most Mysterious Manuscript',
written probably in the second half of the 15th Century, can be understood.

Because of the exchange of saliva that takes place, it is also believed to boost the immune system, in that it naturally encourages one’s organism to find the proper ways of fighting the bacteria one is being exposed to. In this regard, kissing is basically like a sort of “vaccine,” only much pleasanter, experts say.

On a final note, kissing is also known for reducing stress, preventing the formation of dental plaque and cavities, curing hiccups and, of course, for proving that, sometimes, two heads are, indeed, better than one. Furthermore, statistics show an average person spends an estimated 20,160 minutes of their lives locking lips – if you reckon you’re a bit behind on that, and you truly want to experience all the positive effects kissing has on the body, it might be a good idea if you started acting on it already.

Clip Source: news.softpedia.com

Clip Source: news.softpedia.com

One of these positive effects is that it tones up facial muscles, and helps in fighting wrinkles and visible signs of exhaustion by stimulating the circulation of blood to the face. Acting in a way similar to that of the facial exercises we were telling you about yesterday, it has been scientifically proven that, while a simple peck only engages two muscles, a more intense kiss requires almost all face muscles. This, combined with the rush of adrenaline and the release of neurotransmitters, helps burn calories faster than you might think.

As a matter of fact, recent kissing experiments seem to indicate that an average-sized person can lose up to a pound over a short period of time, by simply taking an active part in three kisses a day, each at least five seconds long. Aside from burning calories in a fun way, it has been shown that kissing also stimulates cardiovascular activity, lowers cholesterol and decreases high blood pressure.

Tags: science

<clipSource>http://news.softpedia.com/newsImage/Kissing-Burns-Calories-Helps-You-Stay-in-Top-Shape-2.jpg</clipSource>

World's Oldest Marijuana Stash Found

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clipper's remarks: The region of China where the tomb is located, Xinjiang, is considered an original source of many cannabis strains worldwide.

How cool is that?

Clip Source: www.torontosun.com

2,700-year-old marijuana stash found

OTTAWA – Researchers say they have located the
world's oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China.

The
cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly "cultivated for
psychoactive purposes," rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a
research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

The 789 grams of dried
cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man,
likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

The
extremely dry conditions and alkaline soil acted as preservatives, allowing
a team of scientists to carefully analyze the stash, which still looked
green though it had lost its distinctive odour.

"To our knowledge, these
investigations provide the oldest documentation of cannabis as a
pharmacologically active agent,"

The tomb also
contained bridles, archery equipment and a harp, confirming the man's high
social standing.

<clipSource>http://www.torontosun.com/news/weird/2008/11/27/7557641.html</clipSource>

They have a hero

clipped by: JohnWaterman
clipper's remarks: They love their Prez!

Clip Source: www.dailykos.com

Nothing however, can prepare you for what abstract masterpieces icy nights may bring. Flourishes of Jack Frost’s brushstrokes envelop windscreens in fractal crystal and transform into icy autumn leaves, crystal ferns and mathematical shapes. Jack Frost is an abstract artist.

Perhaps the beauty of frost lies precisely in the fact that it is ephemeral, melting into oblivion only several hours after it is created. Frost deposits form when water vapor turns directly into ice, which happens when the air temperature is at or below freezing. When the first frost crystals form a layer, new crystals will align themselves with those already there, which gives us the amazing natural patterns we see.

<clipSource>http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/featured/abstract-masterpieces-frost/4336</clipSource>

you can view the toolbag in space through binoculars

clipped by: jimbo1000
clipper's remarks: I don't know whether I'll have time to do this, I've got a lot of clipping to do.

Clip Source: www.popastro.com

Viewing the ISS toolbag

It should be possible to view the toolbag lost overboard from the International Space Station (ISS) using binoculars from the UK, and to photograph the object as a trail in the sky.
