Welcome Salute & Public Visitation For USS NEW YORK

The future USS NEW YORK (LPD 21), built with 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center in her bow, will be commissioned in New York City on Nov. 7, 2009. The ship arrived on Nov. 2. The public can welcome her by visiting the ship before she leaves on Nov. 12, 2009.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., on November 2, the future USS NEW YORK will come to a standstill across from the World Trade Center site, dip her flag, and deliver a 21-gun salute. Members of the Fire Department of New York, the New York Police Department, Port Authority Police, members of the families of 9/11 victims and veterans will gather on the shore at the North Cove in the World Financial Center to return the salute. Members of the general public are encouraged to attend

NM calf fitted with prosthetic legs

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Meadow the yearling Black Angus calf spends her days frolicking in northeastern New Mexico's cattle country, all with her prosthetic hind legs.

The bucolic scene seemed impossible just a few months ago, when rancher Nancy Dickenson and her stepdaughter, Martha, found Meadow on a neighbor's property. The 11-month-old calf had lost her back hooves and half of her ears to severe frostbite.

The Dickensons have rescued dozens of animals and wanted to give Meadow a chance to walk normally again. They located the calf's owner and bought Meadow, and convinced veterinarians and students at Colorado State University to help her.

Doctors amputated a portion of Meadow's hind legs in August and fitted her with the prosthetics, a rare procedure done on livestock typically destined for the food supply. Meadow is believed to be the first bovine calf fitted with double prosthetics

Hungry dog leads Glenwood hunters to her puppies

Ed Cray and two friends were camping in the White River National Forest near Glenwood Springs when they heard a dog barking.

Later, the dog wandered into their campsite. Seeing that she was very thin, the hunters fed her some of their leftover dinner. While she wandered off back into the woods, the hunters worried about her and assumed she might have been abandoned.

Later in their trip, the dog, whom the hunters named Remy, came back and led the hunters to her den in the woods. Under a fallen tree were five, plump, squirming puppies.

Even though they didn't shoot any elk, Cray said this was a perfect hunting trip.

I am participating in the Wag ‘n Trail on September 19 in an effort to help the homeless pets at the Dumb Friends League shelter in Castle Rock, the Buddy Center.

The Buddy Center needs our support in caring for the more than 5,000 animals that come through its doors every year. Animals are brought to the shelter every day because their families can no longer care for them, they are lost or need medical attention that their families cannot afford. The Buddy Center welcomes all animals regardless of the situation and provides them with food, shelter, vaccinations and medical care. Every pet that goes to a new home is spayed or neutered, has a microchip ID implant, a collar and tag, and a free post-adoption veterinary vsit.

Police beanbag bounces off bear, hits Aspen newspaper office

ASPEN — The Aspen Police Department insists it does not have a problem with the local media, even though it shot out a front window at The Aspen Times offices some time late Thursday or early Friday.

While pursuing a black bruin and trying to spook it out of town, officer Jeff Fain used a non-lethal weapon to fire a beanbag at the critter. Fain hit his target, but the beanbag deflected off the bear, and through a window at the Main Street newspaper.

It was the first time that a beanbag intended for a bear caused property damage, said Police Chief Richard Pryor, adding the police department will pay to replace the broken window.

"When we rewrite our bear policy, we'll make sure to include to not fire near a news building," Pryor jested.

Sheriff: Kidnap victim, children kept in backyard shed

(CNN) -- An 11-year-old California girl snatched from the street in front of her house in 1991 had two children with the man accused of taking her and lived in a secret backyard shed, authorities said Thursday.

The 18-year mystery of what happened to Jaycee Dugard ended this week when a sex offender admitted to corrections authorities that he abducted her.

Jaycee was abducted from South Lake Tahoe in June 1991, said Fred Kollar, undersheriff of El Dorado County. The case began to unfold when the sex offender, Phillip Garrido, 58, was stopped and questioned by campus police at the University of California at Berkeley.

With him were two children and a woman identified only as Alissa, who DNA tests later revealed was Dugard, now 29. The children were later determined to be Garrido's and Dugard's, Kollar said.

One dead after Disney World monorail accident

ORLANDO, FL (NBC) - A worker at Disney World in Orlando was killed after the fireworks show there in an accident on the monorail.

The monorail system inside the Magic Kingdom is closed Sunday night as investigators look into what caused that fatal accident Sunday morning.

Officials said two of the monorails collided, killing the operator of one of the trains.

The operator of the other train was not injured, but was taken to a local hospital.

Five guests were also treated at the scene for minor injuries.

It's not so much snatching victory from the jaws of defeat as dinner from the jaws of danger.

But even the imposing presence of an adult leopard at feeding time is not enough to get between plucky young Rattus Norvegicus (better known as the brown rat) and a free meal.

This extraordinary series of images were captured by photography student Casey Gutteridge, as he trained his camera on the leopard for a course project.

Sheena, bemused by the interloper coming between her and the remains of dinner, padded over on paws big enough to wreak vengeance with a single swipe.

But rather than giving the thief at very least the hearty set down it deserved, she gingerly lowered her nose for an exploratory sniff.

'But the leopard was pretty surprised - she bent down and sniffed at it and flinched a bit like she was scared.

Sara Baysinger and her 2-year-old son, Lane, sit at home in La Salle on Thursday with their dog, Cash. The German shepherd stayed with the body of Jake Baysinger, who committed suicide in the Pawnee National Grassland after he went missing in June.
