NEW YORK - Girlfriend getaways are growing in popularity, according to a survey released Thursday.

The study conducted by the AAA auto and travel association found that 24 percent of American women have taken a girlfriend getaway in the past three years and nearly 40 percent plan one in the next three years.

The survey of 1,500 women found that the most common destination was the beach (66 percent) followed by a spa (63 percent) or a shopping site (55 percent) or a cruise (51 percent).

Most indicated, however, that the destination was incidental to the purpose of the trip —spending quality time with female friends and family members, the study found.

It also found that while about 7 percent of the girls-only trips were related to a planned wedding, and 9 percent to a birthday, most didn't have a specific peg. In more than a third of cases, respondents said they wanted to reconnect with friends or get together for no special reason.

Tom Knapp finally retired his old Benelli M1 Super 90 last year when he donated it to the Buffalo Bill Historic Center in Cody, Wyoming, where it will be put on permanent display next to the guns of other great exhibition shooters like Herb Parsons and Annie Oakley. Tom's old Benelli wasn't worn out, in fact it had never let Tom down, but it was after Tom sent his faithful Super 90 to the museum that he sat down and figured out how many rounds the gun had fired. With over 140 live shows per year, the total number of rounds put through the Benelli was over half a million. Well, it's a good thing Tom retired that gun, because at that pace he would have worn it out... in another hundred years or so.

EVERY year, 15 million licensed hunters head into America’s forests and fields in search of wild game. In New York State alone, roughly half a million hunters harvest around 190,000 deer in the fall deer hunting season — that’s close to eight million pounds of venison. In the traditional vernacular, we’d call that “game meat.” But, in keeping with the times, it might be better to relabel it as free-range, grass-fed, organic, locally produced, locally harvested, sustainable, native, low-stress, low-impact, humanely slaughtered meat.

Hunters need to push a new public image based on deeper traditions: we are stewards of the land, hunting on ground that we know and love, collecting indigenous, environmentally sustainable food for ourselves and our families.

Stopping Sex At The Beach

It may be Martin County officials trying to scare off people looking for sex on the beach.

The county is exploring the idea of installing "talking" cameras at several of the public beaches to ward off or catch people engaged in public sex.

"I'm all for it," said Commission Chairman Michael DiTerlizzi, who first proposed putting Web cams at beaches after several recent arrests of men soliciting men for sex at county beaches. "Anything that deters that kind of activity is going to be good."

FlashCAM devices sense motion and then flash a bright light, said David Graham, assistant to County Administrator Duncan Ballantyne.

After being activated, the cameras issue a pre-recorded verbal warning to let people know they are under surveillance, Graham said. Sixty seconds later, they start recording.

The commissioner said he wants cameras watching everywhere on the beaches and parking lots but not in the public bathrooms because it would be an invasion of privacy.

Sometimes I wonder where they took my country when I wasn’t looking. It's been dragged off, sealed in a box and hidden in the basement under a pile of recyclables.

Officials with the city's Department on Aging went to Lillian Fletcher's home Oct. 29 to make a welfare check, and called police when they saw Fletcher in a window swinging a hammer back and forth . . . officers arrived and in an attempt to subdue Fletcher one of them used their Taser. The department is trying to determine if the officer violated department policy regarding the use of stun guns.

Strange times. The dollar is worth half of what it was when Bush took over from that rogue Clinton, Richie Daley in Chicago actually thinks having the Olympics there would be a good idea, 45 million Americans have no health insurance and 35 million need a handout just to get food.

Pat Robertson, the television evangelist and Christian Coalition founder, endorsed Republican White House hopeful Rudy Giuliani for president when the two men appeared together at the National Press Club in Washington on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, former White House hopeful Sen. Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican who is the leading voice for Christian conservatives in the Senate, will endorse Sen. John McCain for president, McCain's campaign announced Wednesday.
