A swirling 'soup' of plastic has been found in the Atlantic, and something similar may be present in other ocean areas.

When Sylvia Earle began diving in 1952, the ocean was pristine. These days, things are different. "For the past 30 years I have never been on a dive anytime, anywhere, from the surface to 2-1/2 miles deep, without seeing a piece of trash," says the renowned oceanographer and former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "There's life from the surface to the greatest depths -- and there's also trash from the surface to the greatest depths."

After Sarah Palin's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week she has announced she will be stepping down in a few weeks. In a press conference call this morning, Alaska's Governor Sarah Palin has announced she will not run for re-election and is stepping down as governor.

She had a brief statement. She took no questions.

Her commissioners and Lt. Governor were with her at her home. Palin did not relinquished the reigns of the state to the Lt. Governor while running for vice president.

Rumors of an "iceberg scandal" have been circulating.

Resignation is certainly out of character for Sarah Palin. Senator Mark Begich had a meeting with Sarah Palin two days ago with no mention of her leaving office. Palin's press secretary, David Murrow had posted on his facebook page Wednesday, "David Murrow is considering life's ironies." He was hired less than a month ago. Yesterday he wrote, "There's gonna be some fireworks this weekend!"

Even at that early date, the message from Bush was "find a way to do this," according to O'Neill, a critic of the Iraq invasion who was forced out of his job in December 2002.

The New Yorker's Jane Mayer later made another discovery: a secret NSC document dated February 3, 2001 - only two weeks after Bush took office - instructing NSC officials to cooperate with Cheney's task force, which was "melding" two previously unrelated areas of policy: "the review of operational policies towards rogue states" and "actions regarding the capture of new and existing oil and gas fields." Two years before the invasion of Iraq, oil executives and foreign policy advisers told the Bush administration that the United States would remain "a prisoner of its energy dilemma" as long as Saddam Hussein was in power.

That April 2001 report, "Strategic Policy Challenges for the 21st Century," was prepared by the James A. Baker Institute for Public Policy and the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations at the request of then-Vice President Dick Cheney.

In retrospect, it appears that the report helped focus administration thinking on why it made geopolitical sense to oust Hussein, whose country sat on the world's second largest oil reserves.

A Focus on Oil

But Bush's first treasury secretary, Paul O'Neill, later described a White House interest in invading Iraq and controlling its vast oil reserves, dating back to the first days of the Bush presidency.

Japan Officially Labels Paul Watson a "Terrorst" for Saving Whales

When will this silly "terrorism" rhetoric end? I thought that once Bush left office he would take the with-us-or-with-the-terrorists mentality with him. Maybe that was naive. Apparently the Japanese government has taken yet another step towards labeling the conservationist Paul Watson a terrorist.

While being held, Watson discovered from the US agents that the Japanese government has sent an official communication to the American government that they suspect the anti-whaling activist of being a terrorist. The homeland security officer eventually let him go, but only after asking for an autograph for his son. Apparently the boy is a big fan of Whale Wars. Awesome.

U.S. Ranked Seven of Eight on Climate Change

The U.S. is ranked seven in the G8 Climate Scorecard, in a recently released study by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and global insurance company Allianz SE. The U.S. was ranked behind Canada, and ahead of Russia, a slight improvement from previous years when it ranked last.

The study rated the climate performance of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. The countries were rated for the reduction/growth of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 1990, the percentage of their energy portfolio from renewables, and investment in clean energy technology.

The U.S., according to the study, has a “strong dependence on coal and oil.” However, the Obama administration was praised by the study for having a “very positive and encouraging attitude towards climate policies.”

Rather than focusing its efforts on good animal husbandry and long-term humane solutions like bare-breech breeding, the Australian wool industry wastes time and effort on cheap, cruel flystrike-control methods, like painful plastic mulesing "clips". These so-called "alternatives" are ineffective, inhumane and unacceptable to retailers and consumers around the world. And each year, millions of sheep discarded by the Australian wool industry are crammed onto export ships to be sent to the Middle East. Sheep who survive the terrifying voyage are often dragged off trucks by their ears and legs, tied up and beaten and have their throats slit while they are still conscious.

Please write to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd right now and ask him to ban mulesing mutilations. Demand that only effective, humane alternatives be used instead, and urge him to put an end to the cruel live-export industry.

THE arrogance of Israel is nothing short of breath-taking.

On the eve of one of the most damning reports ever to be published on human rights abuses and suspected war crimes, Israel committed an act of piracy.

While western naval fleets are patrolling the waters off the coast of Africa, acts of piracy are being carried out routinely in the Mediterranean.

But the international community leaders couldn’t care less because most of those who are kidnapped, shot at and hijacked at sea are Palestinian fishermen from Gaza.

However yesterday Israel crossed a line after firing on and boarding a boat carrying aid and peace activists to Gaza.

This is piracy. Nothing more. Nothing less.

It’s anyone’s guess what will happen to the Humanity’s cargo of medical supplies, cement, olive trees, and children's toys.

Exactly what the hell is Israel up to by banning or trying to prevent boats from entering waters not in its territory?

Arraf, a law lecturer, was born in the U.S. to a Palestinian family from within Israel's Green Line, or internationally recognised borders. She is also a U.S. citizen.

Deporting her could be problematic, and she may face court for attempting to enter Gaza. Israeli law bans Israeli citizens from entering the coastal territory.

Several attempts by IPS to contact Arraf in detention were unsuccessful. FGM reported that it had also been unable to contact activists on their cell phones in detention.

Meanwhile, Berlin vows to continue trying to break Israel's siege on Gaza.

"It isn't over till the fat lady sings. They took our boat, so we'll get a freighter. Israel has no right to keep 1.5 million residents under siege, to occupy Gaza, and to turn it into one big refugee camp."

Nobel Laureate 'Abducted' by Israeli Navy

RAMALLAH - Twenty-one international peace activists were seized by Israeli naval frigates in international waters Tuesday as their boat 'The Spirit of Humanity' tried to carry humanitarian aid to Gaza.

"This is an outrageous violation of international law against us. Our boat was not in Israeli waters, and we were on a human rights mission to the Gaza Strip," said former presidential candidate McKinney.

"President Obama just told Israel to let in humanitarian and reconstruction supplies, and that's exactly what we tried to do," she added.

"Our mission is a gesture to the people of Gaza that we stand by them and that they are not alone," she added.

According to an International Committee of the Red Cross report released Monday, Palestinians living in Gaza are "trapped in despair".

The report says hospitals are struggling to meet the needs of their patients due to Israel's disruption of medical supplies.

The Obama administration has yet to hold accountable those who authorized torture -- torture that killed at least 100 people.

Today, several prominent bloggers are writing about detainees who died in U.S. custody, using documents released through the ACLU’s Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. We’re not talking suicide, or death by "natural causes." No, this is death as a result of torture and abuse while in custody. This effort comes on the eve of the release -- we hope -- of the CIA Inspector General’s report on waterboarding. (You might’ve heard last Friday that the release was delayed.)

The House just passed a Defense Authorization bill that includes billions in extra spending for unnecessary F-22 fighter jets. President Obama has announced that he might veto the bill if the planes aren’t taken out, but we don't want things to come to that: The Senate is taking up their version of the Defense Authorization bill next week, and if enough of us demand that they take these wasteful warplanes out of the bill, then the President won’t have to.
