FIFA inspectors recommended Brazil's bid to host the 2014 World Cup on Thursday.

Brazil is the only candidate to host the 2014 competition, an event it has won a record five times but hosted only once – in 1950, when it lost to Uruguay in the last match of the tournament before a Maracana crowd estimated at about 200,000.

Zurich, Switzerland (AHN) - The executive commitee of FIFA, soccer's world governing body, will decide where the World Cup will be held in 2014, at a meeting in Zurich on October 30.

One day earlier, on Monday, October 29, associations will have the opportunity to present their bids to the committee - but to date Brazil is the sole candidate.

World Cup Brazil 1950, ended in disappointment when Uruguay beat their hosts 2-1 in the final at Rio de Janeiro.

A great article down here in Brazil yesterday brought up the nascent growth of baseball in Brazil. As everybody, in and outside of Brazil knows, this country is famous for one sport: soccer (futebol). Everything revolves around soccer, and what little attention is given to other sports here tends to be given to volleyball (which is also rather big) and very mild attention to basketball. In all of this, of course, baseball is totally absent, and I can't tell you the number of times I've had Brazilians ask me what the hell baseball is and what it's about, only to glaze over and be confused within the first five seconds of my explaining it.

However, it appears that baseball is making a tenuous start in some of the favelas.

In some ways, MLB should recognize the opportunity this nascent phase of baseball in Brazil is as quickly as possible, and try to increase interest in baseball via the baseball clinincs that it has set up in other parts of Latin America with huge success.

Brazilian soccer star Romario finally scored his 1,000th goal after a two-month drought that had the nation wondering if he'd ever reach the milestone.

Brazil's all-time leading scorer is the famed Pele, who had 1,281 goals in his career.

Goal by ball boy leaves Brazilians laughing, sobbing

Rio de Janeiro- A ball boy who made the scoreboard when a ball he casually kicked into the net was mistakenly recognized as a goal by a referee has left Brazilians incensed, laughing and shaking their heads. The scandal over the irregular goal broke out Monday night when the programme Sporttv broadcast footage that clearly showed the ball boy was the one who put the ball into the net during a Third Division game between Santacruzense and Atletico Sorocabana.

Referee Silvia Regina de Oliveira, a well-known official who was the first woman to referee a Brazilian National Championship match, saw the ball in the net and recognized it as a goal, bringing the score to a final 1-1 despite long protests from Atletico Sorocabana.

De Oliveira had her back to the goal at the time the ball boy placed his shot and relied on a linesman who saw no irregularities with the goal.

Samuel apparently had no qualms with the goal.

"I simply shot the ball," he said. "If the referee recognized the goal, then it's her problem, not ours."

Atletico Sorocabana, however, naturally saw the situation in an entirely different light.

"We were defrauded," the team's vice president, Valdir Cipriani, said. "... The television footage speaks for itself."

The football association in Sao Paulo state said, however, that regardless of the television images, it sees no possibility of annulling the results.

Brazil's change over after World Cup fiasco

Brazilian football's rebuilding effort has begun in earnest, as the country's new manager announced a drastically altered squad for Brazil's first friendly since exiting this year's World Cup in the quarter-finals.

Manager Dunga left out superstars Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Kaka from his new 22-man squad. Only eight members of Brazil's World Cup squad were included.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil Jul 19, 2006 (AP)— Carlos Alberto Parreira quit as coach of Brazil on Wednesday, three weeks after his team was eliminated by France in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

Parreira guided Brazil to its fourth Cup title in 1994. His team was laden with all-stars this year, making it a favorite to win the World Cup.

The Brazil confederation did not immediately name a replacement for Parreira. The club will play Norway in a friendly game on Aug. 16 in Oslo.

World-Nanjing pensioners react badly to Brazil exit

BEIJING, July 6 (Reuters) - An elderly Chinese man went on a rampage in Nanjing after Brazil's defeat to France in the World Cup quarter-finals last weekend.

The man ran amok in a city square hitting people with a stick and shouting" "The Brazilians lost! There is nothing worth watching! I don't want to watch any more games!"

Another pensioner in China's former capital was similarly distraught and was arrested for running around the streets naked carrying a banner reading "Brazil Must Win".

Radical Islamic militia fighters in Somalia shot and killed two people who were watching a banned World Cup soccer broadcast, a radio station reported Wednesday.
The hard-line Muslim fighters, who have banned watching television, opened fire after a crowd of teenagers defied their orders to leave a hall where a businessman was showing Tuesday's Germany-Italy match on satellite television, according to Shabelle Radio, an independent local station.
