Israel Concerned about Iran's Latin America Ties

The expansion of Iran's diplomatic and consular presence in Central and South America is causing serious concern to Israel.

Iranian embassies or consulates have been opened recently in Nicaragua, Ecuador and Chile and the staffs of the existing missions to Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico have been enlarged, according to the foreign ministry here.

Venezuela and its robust leader, Hugo Chavez, are being singled out by Israeli officials as Iran's staunchest ally in the Western Hemisphere.

They are worried about reports in the international news media that Venezuela intends to sell uranium to Iran and has been concocting false documents to conceal its shipments of equipment intended for the Iranian nuclear development program.

The Israelis suspect that the Iranians again will engage in terrorism under the cover of diplomacy.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today welcomed an offer by Brazil to resettle an estimated 100 Palestinians formerly living in Iraq starting in mid-September.

Apart from Canada and New Zealand, in recent years Brazil has been the only country to offer resettlement to Palestinian refugees from Iraq, according to UNHCR, which has been spotlighting their plight.

A Brazilian engineer who was kidnapped in Iraq in 2005 while working on a reconstruction project has been confirmed dead, the government said on Thursday.

The remains of Joao Jose Vasconcellos were identified and the body has been sent home, a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Born in Tehran during the turmoil of the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Nazanin's family was forced to leave all their worldly possessions behind and flee to freedom, when her father had been jailed and tortured by the Revolutionary Guard under the new regime. Awaiting execution, it was the family's escape to Europe that saved them from political persecution. Faced with adversity so early in life, the revolution impacted her core.

Today Nazanin sings about a New Revolution for Iran- her homeland.
The visuals are extraordinary and include scenes from the the mullah's revolution starting in 1978 and pictures from other historic freedom revolutions since that time.

US forces on Friday detained four members of a gang suspected of smuggling armour-piercing bombs from Iran to Iraq and sending back militants for "terrorist training", the military said.

American commanders say the design is exclusively Iranian and in January alleged that at least 170 US troops had been killed by EFPs since May 2004.

The statement also said that the gang had sent "militants from Iraq to Iran for terrorist training."

"Intelligence reports also indicate the secret cell has ties to a kidnapping network that conducts attacks within Iraq," it added.

A Pentagon spokesman said Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi had links to militant leaders in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and had now been taken to Guantanamo Bay.

He is described as one of Osama Bin Laden's "top global deputies", personally chosen by the al-Qaeda leader to monitor operations in Iraq.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the suspect was "one of al-Qaeda's highest-ranking and senior operatives at the time of his detention.

"He is associated with leaders of extremist groups allied with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and including the Taleban," he added.

An elite group of Native American trackers is joining the hunt for terrorists crossing Afghanistan's borders. The unit, the Shadow Wolves, was recruited from several tribes, including the Navajo, Sioux, Lakota and Apache. It is being sent to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to pass on ancestral sign-reading skills to local border units.

Brazil Implements UN Sanctions

AP reports that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has signed a decree in line with the Security Council’s resolution to impose sanctions on Iran.

The law effectively bans the sale and transfer of nuclear equipment and technology to Iran, though according to a spokesman for the foreign ministry, he was uncertain whether or not Brazil had sold or transferred any nuclear equipment or technology to Iran in the past.
