The vehemently anti-US leader says Nicaragua, Bolivia, Cuba and Dominica should create one united force.

Mr Chavez has urged them to draw up a joint defence policy and create a united military force against US imperialism.

Venezuela's controversial President Hugo Chávez has revealed that he regularly consumes coca -- the source of cocaine -- raising questions about the legality of his actions.

''I chew coca every day in the morning . . . and look how I am,'' he is seen saying on a video of the speech, as he shows his biceps to the audience.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez are seeing each other, claim newspaper reports in the South American country.

According to respected El Universal journalist Nelson Bocaranda, the 53-year-old president fell ‘head-over-heels’ in love with the catwalk queen after their interview.

Campbell is quoted in El Universal, calling Chavez as ‘not a gorilla, he is more a bull’.

After 50 years of democracy, what led Venezuela to opt, by means of the ballot, election after election, for a government with autocratic characteristics? The answer is simple: Chávez is the product of the insensibility of the elite and the demoralization of politics.

The Brazil of today is acting like the Venezuela of years past. Lula's election was the result of the elite's historic insensitivity and of the demoralization of politics. He represented the new; he said that the Congress was composed of 300 con artists; he led a party that symbolized the struggle against corruption and the hope for new national politics that would transform the society to benefit the emancipation of the poor.

Instead of changing society, he took steps to accommodate the people and the political parties. He adopted a form of conducting politics identical to that which he had previously criticized.

Venezuela's Hugo Chavez is a very real threat, and I believe the Brazilian military knows that. An oil-rich Brazil could be a hindrance to Chavez' planned domination of the region.

This month's discovery of a monster offshore oil reserve justifies Brazil's plan to build a nuclear submarine because it would be used to protect the find, the defense minister said.

Jobim said Brazil must safeguard the Tupi field and its 5 billion to 8 billion barrels of oil reserves from other nations and from "actions that could come from the area of terror," the government's Agencia Brasil news service reported.

Brazil has no South American enemies and has not experienced terrorist attacks, although U.S. government reports have sporadically raised suspicions that the nation's Triple Border region near Argentina and Paraguay is a fundraising source for radical Islamic groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

Venezuela and Brazil are not competing in a regional arms race, despite suspicions to the contrary voiced in Brasilia, an influential Venezuelan general said in an interview published Monday.

He denied a claim by Brazilian senator Jose Sarney, a former president who is now a key ally to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, that Venezuela posed a "threat" to Brazil and Latin America.

Brazil last month said it was boosting its military spending by more than 50 percent, to 9.1 billion reais (US$5.2 billion), in what it termed a purely defensive move.

Brazil sees itself sharing borders with several countries that are either sympathetic to Chavez or allied to the United States.

It considers itself unallied, though the Folha de Sao Paulo said that Brazil's military leaders "have an expectation" that Washington will now make overtures to bring the country into the US orbit to counter Venezuela's rising might.

Brazilian bishops expressed support for Venezuela's clergy on Thursday and said recent insults by President Hugo Chavez were "extremely offensive."

"The terms used were extremely offensive and in this context we declare our eternal solidarity with the (Venezuelan) conference," said Archbishop Geraldo Lyrio Rocha, president of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops.

Chavez replied on Sunday that the statement was "a disgrace" and that the Venezuelan clergy "are the ones that now are morally unacceptable for our people, for our Church."

Chavez has proposed doing away with presidential term limits as part of the constitutional reform, which would allow him to run for re-election again in 2012 and beyond.

Like so many other Americans, I cheered Hugo Chavez' early work to restore dignity to the people of Venezuela. I chuckled when I listened to Chavez express many of the same opinions of president Bush as many Americans have.

Today, to see the end of criticism, the end of the legislative progress, in fact the entire process of democratic give and take makes me feel like a fool for believing Hugo Chavez would be any different than any other leader.

Hugo Chavez may have been a socialist democrat at one time ... but he has become a nothing more than the egocentric dictator Aleksander Boyd warned me about.

Shame on me for believing in Chavez and supporting his work

President Hugo Chavez said Sunday that foreigners who publicly criticize him or his government while visiting Venezuela will be expelled from the country.

"How long are we going to allow a person — from any country in the world — to come to our own house to say there's a dictatorship here, that the president is a tyrant, and nobody does anything about it?" Chavez asked during his weekly television and radio program.

The expansion of Iran's diplomatic and consular presence in Central and South America is causing serious concern to Israel.

Iranian embassies or consulates have been opened recently in Nicaragua, Ecuador and Chile and the staffs of the existing missions to Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico have been enlarged, according to the foreign ministry here.

Venezuela and its robust leader, Hugo Chavez, are being singled out by Israeli officials as Iran's staunchest ally in the Western Hemisphere.

They are worried about reports in the international news media that Venezuela intends to sell uranium to Iran and has been concocting false documents to conceal its shipments of equipment intended for the Iranian nuclear development program.

The Israelis suspect that the Iranians again will engage in terrorism under the cover of diplomacy.

When the state oil company recently took over the last privately run oil fields in Venezuela, President Hugo Chávez declared it a victory against Washington and a giant leap toward a new energy policy that would diversify the market for Venezuelan crude to include rising powers like China.

Bolivian authorities announced Friday a drastic rationing of natural gas supplies to Argentina, and smaller cuts in exports to Brazil after protesters seized control of three gas installations.

Supplies to the Brazilian cities of Sao Paulo and Santos will be reduced from 24.6 million cubic meters (869 million cubic feet) a day to 24 million cubic meters (847 million cubic feet,) while exports to the the eastern Brazilian region of Cuiaba, which received 1.2 million cubic meters (42 million cubic feet) a day, will be cut off entirely, the minister said.

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Not long ago, President Hugo Chavez was embarking on ambitious plans to produce ethanol as the eco-fuel of choice. But within the past two months, the biofuel has suddenly become a villain for him and a major point of friction with Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Chavez said last week that Venezuela was working on an alternative proposal to "overthrow" the U.S.-Brazil agreement, which he characterizes as an ethanol "cartel" that will monopolize arable lands and starve the poor _ criticisms shared by his Cuban ally, Fidel Castro.
