The news of John McCain’s vice presidential pick buzzed through the office this morning and brought all productivity to a halt. Conservative and liberal alike huddled in a single cubicle to watch the announcement live on CNN.com. Not a single word of criticism was uttered, as nearly every Alaskan has a unified love for our humble, no-nonsense, genuine-Alaskan Governor. Sarah Palin has a nearly 90% approval rating in this state for good reason. She has brought honesty and integrity to a state government notorious for corruption, forsaken many of the ritzy trappings of the governorship to set an example for fiscal restraint and taken on both Republicans and Democrats in Alaska politics only for their own benefit.

It is pretty audacious for the Obama campaign to say that Governor Palin is not qualified to be Vice President. She has a record of accomplishment that Senator Obama simply cannot match. Governor Palin has spent her time in office shaking up government in Alaska and actually achieving results -- whether it’s taking on corruption, passing ethics reform or stopping wasteful spending and the ‘bridge to nowhere.’ Senator Obama has spent his time in office running for President.

There seems to me no question that the Batman film "The Dark Knight," currently breaking every box office record in history, is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war.

Like W, Batman is vilified and despised for confronting terrorists in the only terms they understand. Like W, Batman sometimes has to push the boundaries of civil rights to deal with an emergency, certain that he will re-establish those boundaries when the emergency is past.

And like W, Batman understands that there is no moral equivalence between a free society -- in which people sometimes make the wrong choices -- and a criminal sect bent on destruction. The former must be cherished even in its moments of folly; the latter must be hounded to the gates of Hell.

"The Dark Knight," then, is a conservative movie about the war on terror.

Online ESL Activities

Alphabet Tic-Tac-Toe
Draw a 3x3 grid on the board. In each square of the grid, write a letter. Put the students into 2-4 teams. Each team selects a square, and must think of ten words beginning with the letter in the sqaure. Give them a time limit, for example 1 minute. If they get 10 correct words, that team gets the square. The first with 3 in a row wins the game. With more teams use a 4x4 grid, teams have to get 3 or 4-in-a-row. Good for younger learners.

Also, instead of letters you can write topics. Students have to name 10 words from a topic, such as food and drink, pop music singers, sports, etc... Great for older learners.

THE COFFEEPOT GAME

This is a traditional but fun game to play: one student is sent out of the class and the remaining students choose a simple verb (e.g. "walk". "eat", "dance" , etc) . The student that is outside then returns and has to find out which is the "mystery" verb by asking yes-no questions to the other students. The word "coffeepot "is provided to substitite the verb. The student then asks:"Do you coffeepot every day?" ; "Do you coffeepot with your legs? " until he / she finds out which is the mystery verb.

Being an adult has come on difficult times in recent years.

being an adult seems to be becoming something to avoid, like a terminal disease.

In recent years just about the only good that people see in being an "adult" seems to be the ability to "legally" access pornography and alcohol.

Could it be that somewhere along the line we have forgotten that adulthood is an adventure that carries with it responsibility which will have a bearing on our destiny?

Perhaps a lesson could be learned from the ancient kings of Judah.

In their youth they were men of faith. As they grew older they seemed more interested in safety. The change moved them from a daring trust in God to a groveling search for ungodly alliances which could give them the protection they craved.

If we are to return adulthood to imaginative desirability, we must stop bemoaning the loss of "youth" and present an enthusiasm for being an adult which can be expressed with robust authenticity of spirit
