Given Translation: The walls have hearsay.

Actual Meaning: The walls have ears.

Portuguese Phrase: Bem sei o que devo fazer ou me compete.

Given Translation: I know well who I have to make.

Actual Meaning: I know very well what I have to do and what my responsibilities are.

Upon reading English As She Is Spoke, none other than Mark Twain commented, "Nobody can add to the absurdity of this book, nobody can imitate it successfully, nobody can hope to produce its fellow; it is perfect."

Adjective Clauses

Here is a brief review of adjective clauses and relative pronouns.

	An adjective clause is used to describe a noun:
The car, which was red, belonged to Young-Hee.

	A relative pronoun is usually used to introduce an adjective clause:
Young-Hee, who is a Korean student, lives in Victoria.

The main relative pronouns are:
	Who: used for humans in subject position::
Hans, who is an architect, lives in Berlin.

	Whom: used for humans in object position::
Marike, whom Hans knows well, is an interior decorator.

	Which: used for things and animals in subject or object position::
Marike has a dog which follows her everywhere.

	That: used for humans, animals and things, in subject or object position (but see below)::
Marike is decorating a house that Hans designed.

There are two main kinds of adjective clause:
	Non-defining clauses: give extra information about the noun, but they are not essential:
The desk in the corner, which is covered in books, is mine.
(We don't need this information in order to understand the sentence. "The desk in the corner is mine" is a good sentence on its own -- we still know which desk is referred to. Note that non-defining clauses are usually separated by commas, and *that* is not usually used in this kind of context.)

	Defining clauses: give essential information about the noun:
The package that arrived this morning is on the desk.
(We need this information in order to understand the sentence. Without the relative clause, we don't know which package is being referred to. Note that *that* is often used in non-defining relative clauses, and they are not separated by commas.)

Forming the plural in English is very easy. Add '-s' to any singular word Example: apple - apples and you have made the plural! Some words are formed differently:

Words ending in '-y'. Add '-ies' if '-y' is follows a consonant

Example: candy - candies, jelly - jellies

Words ending in '-ch'. Add '-es'

Example: watch - watches, peach - peaches

Words ending in '-s'. Add '-es'

Example: grass - grasses, glass - glasses

Some important exceptions to the plural rule include:

man - men

woman - women

person - people

child - children

THE COFFEEPOT GAME

This is a traditional but fun game to play: one student is sent out of the class and the remaining students choose a simple verb (e.g. "walk". "eat", "dance" , etc) . The student that is outside then returns and has to find out which is the "mystery" verb by asking yes-no questions to the other students. The word "coffeepot "is provided to substitite the verb. The student then asks:"Do you coffeepot every day?" ; "Do you coffeepot with your legs? " until he / she finds out which is the mystery verb.

If-clauses (Conditional)

A conjunção If introduz as orações subordinadas condicionais e é usada basicamente em três tipos de estruturas.

Oração condicional, oração principal

Tipo 1: If I study hard, I will pass the test.

Tipo 2: If I studied hard, I would pass the test.

Tipo 3: If I had studied hard, I would have passed the test.

Formação:

Tipo 1: Na oração condicional, o verbo está no present simple. Na oração principal, o verbo está no future simple.

Este primeiro tipo indica urn futuro possível.

Example:

If I have time, I will visit you.

Tipo 2: Na oração condicional, o verbo está no past simple. Na oração principal o verbo está no conditional. Este segundo tipo indica um futuro pouco improvável.

Example:

If I had money, I would buy that house.

Tipo 3: Na oração condicional, o verbo está no past perfect. Na oração principal, o verbo está no conditional perfect. Este terceiro tipo indica uma condição impossível.

Example:

If I had seen Mary, I would talked to her.

Importante: Nas orações condicionais o verbo to be apresenta-se geralmente sob a forma were para todas as pessoas.

Examples:

If I were you, I would call her immediately.

If he were here, he would give you the money.

A ordem das orações pode ser invertida.

Examples:

If I study hard, I will pass the test.

I will pass the test if I study hard.

Observe que no segundo caso geralmente não se usa a vírgula.

As if-clauses podem também apresentar-se com outras formações. Veja alguns casos abaixo:

a) Present simple na oração condicional + imperative na principal.

Example:

If you go to the club, don't forget to call me.

b) Present simple na condicional + present simple na principal.

Example:

If we heat ice, it becomes water.

Online ESL Activities

Alphabet Tic-Tac-Toe
Draw a 3x3 grid on the board. In each square of the grid, write a letter. Put the students into 2-4 teams. Each team selects a square, and must think of ten words beginning with the letter in the sqaure. Give them a time limit, for example 1 minute. If they get 10 correct words, that team gets the square. The first with 3 in a row wins the game. With more teams use a 4x4 grid, teams have to get 3 or 4-in-a-row. Good for younger learners.

Also, instead of letters you can write topics. Students have to name 10 words from a topic, such as food and drink, pop music singers, sports, etc... Great for older learners.

Changing Chairs
Put the students in a semicircle, and take away one chair from the students' chairs. Have one student come to the front and ask a question to the other students, eg. "Are you wearing a shirt?". All students who can answer "yes" to the question must change chairs with each other. The person who asked the question also tries to sit down. The person left standing asks the next question.
Often used with the question "Do you have a ... ?", it can also be used for many different situations. A very fun way for kids especially to practice questions.
