Mac OS X only: Dead simple screenshot and image-sharing service Skitch, formerly in private beta, is now open to anyone to download and try out. Skitch is a Mac desktop application that talks to a webapp: sign up for a free account at Skitch.com, install the app, and publish, share, screengrab, and annotate images from your Mac instantly. Great for sharing and discussing images with friends and co-workers online, it's hard to explain just how easy Skitch is to use, so hit the play button above to see it in action. I just started playing with Skitch, and in about 15 seconds I took a screenshot of my desktop, annotated it, and uploaded it to my public Skitch page. Neat. Skitch is a free download for Mac only.

Why blog? And particularly for foreign Christian workers, is there any particular reason to blog? Over the last two or three weeks I’ve been working on a 10-minute presentation on that topic. It’s mainly to be shared with our colleagues here, but since I’ve prepared it, I may as well share it here on my blog, too. If you have a modem connection, you may need to put the video on pause after you start it, then wait until it finishes loading before viewing it. If you have a faster connection, you should probably view the higher resolution version instead. If you have any trouble viewing the video, please let me know what kind of problems.

1 MR. POPULARITY
On the map, white dots represent individual blogs, sized according to number of links. Nearly 500,000 people visit the DailyKos every day, making it one of the world’s most popular blogs. A link from DailyKos is a guaranteed way of attracting Web traffic (and therefore advertising revenue), and as a result DailyKos has a strict link policy. Green links represent one-way links (that is, blog A links to blog B), and blue links indicate reciprocal links (blog B returns the favor).

4 I’LL SHOW YOU MINE. . .
This blue blob represents a balanced sociopolitical discourse. The prevalence of blue in this area shows that most of these links are reciprocal, suggesting a sort of metadialogue between bloggers who hurl headlines at one another. The brightest light belongs to syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin.

I feel I should let readers of this blog know about a web tool I have been using for some time now. Clipmarks is one of many bookmarking sites available today (others include del.icio.us and blinklist). Two features make Clipmarks stand out: 1) the fact that you can (and are in fact encouraged to) "clip" small portions of interesting articles, instead of saving the whole article, and 2) the dynamic community that debates, reffers, and "pops" each entry.

Clipmarks has been perfect for me as I endeavor to keep up with several news articles at once, with the busy schedule that I keep here. It also helps me to refine my opinions and hone my arguments before I post on a given topic, as communicating with the Clipmarks crowd is definitely NOT "preaching to the choir".

If you are a news junkie, a researcher, a blogger, or a missionary looking to keep up on events without reading article after article (ahem), Clipmarks is for you. One of my favorite features is the My Topics section, where any clip posted on selected subjects (in my case Brazil, Theology, Missions, Latin America, and Puppetry) shows up.

If you join, and want to look for my posts, do a search for "brazilnut72". Oh, and don't forget to install the browser extension. It makes things a lot easier.

"When I say 'three' Daddy, we are going to race to the car."

This familiar challenge came from my five-year-old son. His eyes danced with the anticipation that once again he would "beat" Daddy in this little tradition we have.

No doubt the day will come--and sooner than I would like to think--when he will actually be able to beat me in a race. For now, however, I hold the speed advantage. I usually let him win, however. He gets a kick out of the big show I put on of being too exhausted to make it to the end as his short little legs carry him past me on his way to "victory".

"Go!"

As we took off, I decided that I should probably let the little guy know that his old Dad still has it in him. I'm sure ego had something to do with it as well. I mean, a man's pride can only take being beaten by first-grader for so long.

As we sped toward the car, I stretched out my legs and easily covered the distance, leaving Mikey in the dust. Having won a crushing victory, I immediately felt guilt pangs. Had I damaged his ego? Had I disappointed my son?

I turned around just as he came chugging up. His eyes still danced with glee, a big smile on his face.

"You win! Now you are happy! Good job, Daddy!" A giggle rippled out of him like a bubbling brook, and he opened the door of the car to get in. I stood for a moment to collect my emotions.

My son was just as happy that I had won as he would have been if he had been the victor. There was no regret, no pouting--just unadulterated joy and happiness for my victory. The fact that he had lost made absolutely no difference to him.

Bloggers Stop Military Aircraft Sale to Chavez

After Spain brokered the deal with Chavez last year, bloggers targeted the state-owned aircraft company, EADS-CASA, for violating the U.S. arms embargo against Venezuela. This week, online activists generated hundreds of letters and calls into key congressional offices to demand that EADS-CASA be disqualified from U.S. contracts. The effort followed questions that were raised about the deal by U.S. Senators in a letter to President Bush. Today, Spain announced that the sale was off.

"Nobody in Washington wants to do business with Chavez," Waller said. "Now there's little sentiment for doing business with those who are modernizing his military. Lawmakers didn't have to say a thing to the company. The fact that they were alerted was enough," he said. "The guys who did the website that sent letters into Congress really made the difference."

Locales and a question..

Andrew started stolengear.org as a mechanism for reporting and hopefully finding stolen equipment. While it primarily focuses on musical equipment, reports of stolen photo gear are welcome.
