Residents of the Greek island of Lesbos have lost their legal bid to ban the use of the word lesbian to describe gay women.

The group had argued that the word insulted their identity.

Lesbos was the birthplace in 7BC of Sappho, whose love poems inspired the term lesbian.

An Athens court said the word did not define the identity of the residents of the island, and so it could be used validly by gay groups in Greece and abroad.

The Aegean island of Lesbos lies just off the Turkish coast. It has become a gathering spot for gay women, especially at the village of Eressos, which is regarded as the birthplace of Sappho.

Several residents testified during the trial that the use of the word lesbian had boosted the island's tourist trade.

A DARWIN theme park offering a close encounter with a croc in a "Cage of Death" has hit out at cruelty allegations, saying they are the ones saving the creatures from cruelty.

Crocosaurus Cove came under fire from NEWS.com.au readers after the new theme park offered the chance to encounter a 5.5m saltwater underwater, by submerging visitors in a clear box and into the crocodile's lair.

"What you have to put into perspective is that these crocodiles have come from a crocodile farm in Darwin," said Crocosaurus Cove general manager Mike Scott.

Just 4cm of acrylic will separate brave punters from the jaws of Choppa – the feisty saltwater croc.

Tourists will then spend 15 minutes inside the 2.8m high cage and watch Choppa, who lost both front feet while fighting other crocodiles, trying to take a bite out of them.

A man from Al Ain is 135-years old according to the details on his identity card, and he says daily prayers and a healthy lifestyle have helped him reach the ripe old age.

Nasir Al-Hajry says he remembers historical events that occurred more than a century ago such as the Tribes War in the Arab Island, UAE daily Khaleej Times reported on Thursday.

His family plan to contact the Guinness Book of World Records after seeing his identity card.

The man claims to have attended the Arabian Revolution against Turkish imperialism in 1916 and the Arab Island’s wars during the First World War (1914-1918).

Al Hajry said that visiting the mosque five times daily was his only social activity now.

Ship breakers in Bangladesh toil in conditions that resemble hell on earth, breaking rusting hulks by hand for little more than a dollar a day. But should we allow a former French aircraft carrier considered too dangerous for even these workers to be sent to the UK - complete with 700 tons of asbestos?

These men are willing to work in some of the worst conditions on earth for a meagre wage, yet now a ship too toxic for even them is being sent to breakers on Teeside in the UK.

The 32, 700 ton Clemenceau - once the pride of the French navy - has spent the past five years being moved around as officials tried to find a final resting place for the vessel which contains 700 tonnes of asbestos

The ship will be broken up instead by Able UK, which caused an outcry when it brought four rusting US ghost ships to its dock in Hartlepool in 2003. Campaigners against the arrival of the ships claim the firm is making the country a dumping ground for foreign waste
