Obama Steals Bush’s Speechwriters

If you closed your eyes during much of the President’s speech on Afghanistan Tuesday night and just listened to the words, you easily could have concluded that George W. Bush was still in the Oval Office.

Or, at the very least, that Obama had stolen his speechwriters.

Because, like Bush, Obama had barely cleared his throat when out came the first mention of September 11, along with the Bushian line: “We did not ask for this fight.”

US General: Afghan Violence to Rise

The military situation in Afghanistan is "likely to get harder before it gets easier", a top-ranking US general has warned, saying violence in the country will rise in the short-term.

General David Petraeus, who executed the US-led Iraq surge in 2007, told Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday that he expected increased Afghan fighting in the spring and the summer.

The US general told the Committee that Afghanistan is no worse condition now than Iraq was when he arrived there two years ago.

"Indeed, the level of violence and number of violent civilian deaths in Iraq were vastly higher than we have seen in Afghanistan," Petraeus said.

The Secret Service is scrambling for answers after a pair of apparent party crashers is said to have breached security at Tuesday night's state dinner at the White House -- though the couple at the center of the controversy claims they were invited.

The History of the Presidential Pardon for a Thanksgiving Turkey

The pardoning of the turkey given to the President of the United States of America is a fairly modern tradition. In fact, it isn’t even 20 years old yet. Contrary to popular myth, it wasn’t Harry Truman or Abe Lincoln who pardoned the first turkey. It was George H.W. Bush in 1989.

The most popular misconception is that President Harry Truman started the tradition in 1947. However, according to the Truman Museum and Presidential Library, “The Library's staff has found no documents, speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs, or other contemporary records in our holdings which refer to Truman pardoning a turkey that he received as a gift in 1947, or at any other time during his Presidency. Truman sometimes indicated to reporters that the turkeys he received were destined for the family dinner table. Man pays teen to spit in his face

A California man faces misdemeanor charges after allegedly paid a teenager $31 to spit in his face.

The 39-year-old man, who was not identified, was arrested on suspicion of annoying a child Wednesday night at the Promenade at Westlake, the Ventura County Star reports.

The Thousand Oaks man initially contacted male students from Westlake High School on MySpace to get them to yell profanities at him and slap him, and spit in his face for money.

Burglary suspect killed, Arlington homeowner arrested

ARLINGTON – An Arlington area man who called police to report a burglary Monday was jailed early today suspected of killing the suspected intruder.

“This case is unusual in that the original burglary victim has become our shooting suspect and the alleged burglary suspect has become our shooting victim,” Snohomish County sheriff's spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said this morning.

“Detectives do not have any information indicating the shooting suspect was acting in self defense,” she said.

The victim, a Snohomish County man, 25, has not been identified. He died of apparent gunshot wounds. The suspect, 38, is expected to go before a judge later today.
