Nader's desire to see more than two major presidential candidates would make more sense if the United States had a parliamentary system, in which parties are represented in government roughly according to their percentage of the vote. But the president and the 535 members of Congress are chosen in winner-take-all races. This process leads almost inexorably to the emergence of two well-organized parties. In such races, third-party candidates are far more likely to play the spoiler - that is, to sink the candidate closest to them ideologically - than to be elected themselves.

White House defenders claim Congress had no constitutional right to interfere in the detailed conduct of war. They claim being in a war gives the president the right to ignore or violate the Constitution, America’s laws, and citizen’s civil rights.

This is not true. The essence of America’s political system that has been a beacon to the world for two centuries is the remarkable system of checks and balances conceived by its founding fathers to prevent the emergence of an autocrat, despot, or monarch. A president run amok, or one with monarchist ambitions, was the greatest fear of the founding fathers who had just waged a bitter national struggle to free themselves from the rule of King George III.

Congress must cease its timidity and stop entreating the president as if he were king. He is only chief executive of the republic, one man among many. Congress is the board of directors. The president, in spite of his supporter’s efforts, is not the sacrosanct embodiment of America; that role belongs to Congress.

Power to Make War?

Should a single person possess the awesome power to make war? Well, a single person does not possess this power, despite Bush's claims to the contrary.

Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution gives Congress the powers "to declare war"; "to raise and support armies"; "to provide and maintain a navy"; and "to make rules for the government and regulation of the land and naval forces."

The congressional power to "declare war" is tantamount to the power to "make war." In fact, the Constitutional Convention originally proposed giving Congress the power to "make war," but changed the phrase to "declare war" so the president would be able to repel a sudden attack without violating the Constitution. We know this from the copious notes James Madison, the Father of the Constitution, kept at the Convention. It was very clear from the discussion that the intent was to give the war power to Congress, not the president.

She's Back! Laura Mallory, OFF/beat's 2006 Idiot of the Year, appears undeterred in her quest to banish Harry Potter books from school libraries. The suburban-Atlanta mother announced, Wednesday, that she plans to appeal a Georgia court's dismissal of her contention that the best-selling novels are "evil" propaganda aimed at indoctrinating youngsters into witchcraft. Despite having never read the books herself, Ms. Mallory persistently maintains that she is "tak[ing] a stand for truth."

Now, without going so far as calling her an idiot (oh wait), it certainly shows a high level of ignorance to believe that a book you haven't even read is capable of converting people to a religion you know little about. Beyond the flawed logic though, Ms. Mallory's dogmatic persistence may actually end up driving more children to read Harry Potter. In a time when faith is mired by extremism, and reading is at an all time low, perhaps she feels the only way to teach the concepts of poetic justice and the dangers of close-minded fanaticism is through a polemic gesture. If not, she is demonstrating a line of thinking that makes the Salem Witch Trials seem almost rational.
