Man Claims Skin Treatment Turned Face Permanent Blue

A man claims he was left looking and feeling blue after using silver extract to treat a skin condition.

Paul Karason was fair skinned and freckled 14 years ago — before he developed a bad case of dermatitis caused by stress.

When it got so bad that the skin on his face began to peel and crack he started using a substance called colloidal silver.

The product is reportedly made by extracting silver from metal into water with an electrical current and it is then taken as a drink.

But the 57-year-old said drinking the potion did not cause his skin to discolor — the change in hue happened when he rubbed he potion directly onto his face.

"The change was so gradual that I didn't perceive it and other people around me likewise," he said. "It wasn't until a friend I hadn't seen in several months came by my parents' place to see me and he asked me 'What did you do?'"

A Picture is Really Worth a Thousand Words

It is a photo of war. There is no combat in the picture. Look at the picture taken in a studio before the wedding of former Marine Sgt. Ty Ziegel and his fiancée Renee Kline that took place Oct. 7, 2006. In many ways it is a typical wedding day photo, except the image is less than what one might expect on a wedding day. The young bride is perfect in her beautiful wedding gown. She holds a lovely bouquet of flowers. The groom is, well, nearly perfect in his Marine dress blues, replete with war ribbons from his service in Iraq. But look closely at the photo. There is something wrong. Sgt. Ty Ziegel is horribly mutilated, a victim of a suicide car bomber in 2004 in Iraq. He was in recovery for 19 months at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. Despite his wounds, he and his childhood sweetheart married in the face of what could be major problems in the future.

Doctors are dripping the chemical that gives chili peppers their fire directly into open wounds during knee replacement and a few other highly painful operations.

Don't try this at home: These experiments use an ultra-purified version of capsaicin to avoid infection _ and the volunteers are under anesthesia so they don't scream at the initial burn.

How could something searing possibly soothe? Bite a hot pepper, and after the burn your tongue goes numb. The hope is that bathing surgically exposed nerves in a high enough dose will numb them for weeks, so that patients suffer less pain and require fewer narcotic painkillers as they heal.

MIT Researchers Improve `tractor Beam'

Taking up the sci-fi staple of "tractor beams," scientists have developed a way to use light to grab and move minuscule particles on a microchip. The research could lead to fine-grained biological sensors and other precisely built nanoscale devices.

The work by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers could extend the possibilities for "optical tweezers" _ super-focused beams of light that have been used for years to study and manipulate tiny biological structures or even individual atoms.

Optical tweezers have been used on transparent media _ like a microscope slide _ that let the light shine through and hold objects in a tractor beam-like embrace. This is possible because light's individual photons transfer minuscule amounts of force to particles they hit.

Concert at Serbia Death Camp Stirs Anger

Stray dogs wander forlornly around the rundown gray brick barracks that used to house of one of the most notorious World War II Nazi death camps in the Balkans.

Soon, the site where some 48,000 Jews, Serbs and Gypsies perished in the 1940s will be throbbing to the rhythms of rock music.

For Serbia's small Jewish community, the weekend concert at the Sajmiste camp near the center of Belgrade is the latest indignity to befall a site they say needs to be saved from decades of neglect and deterioration.

"It's like holding a wedding at a graveyard," said Aleksandar Mosic, a Jewish chairman of the camp's memorial center, ahead of Saturday's concert by British band Kosheen.

Nearly all of Belgrade's 8,000 Jews were killed at Sajmiste soon after it was set up in 1941 at the site of the Belgrade Fair exhibition ground, Mosic said. Thousands of leftists and Serb nationalists also were killed at the camp.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Wedgie-proof underwear earned 8-year-old twin boys a spot Friday on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

Using rigged boxers and fabric fasteners to hold together some seams, Jared and Justin Serovich came up with the "Rip Away 1000."

"When the person tries to grab you — like the bully or the person tries to give you a wedgie — they just rip away," Justin explained Thursday by phone from Los Angeles, where the TV segment was taped Wednesday.

The third graders from Gables Elementary School began brainstorming one day after they were horsing around, giving each other the treatment. Their mother's partner sarcastically said someone ought to invent wedgie-proof underwear, the family said.

The project got the boys to the finals of a central Ohio invention competition earlier this year, followed by the television appearance.

New York 'Dancing' Dentist Allegedly Punctures Patient's Sinus Cavity

SYRACUSE, N.Y — A dentist was dancing to the song "Car Wash" when the inch-long drill bit he was using during an extraction punctured a woman's sinus cavity and lodged near her eye socket, according to a lawsuit.

Brandy Fanning, 31, of Syracuse said she had to undergo emergency surgery and spent three days in the hospital because of the mishap. Fanning said she still suffers facial swelling, nerve damage and chronic infections from the bacteria that seeped into her sinus cavity.

Trusty gave her some Novocain and while he was drilling to break the molar into quadrants before the extraction, Fanning heard a snap, she said.

Trusty tried to use a metal hook to pull the bit out, but that only pushed it farther up, driving it through the sinus and bone, the lawsuit alleged. When Fanning asked what was happening, Trusty told her it wasn't a big deal and that she'd likely sneeze the drill bit out, the lawsuit said.

Television bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman's son taped a private phone conversation in which the reality star used a racial slur repeatedly, then sold it to a tabloid for "a lot of money," Chapman's lawyer said Thursday.

"I guess because of whatever level of anger he had of his father, he felt the need to express it in that manner," attorney Brook Hart told The Associated Press.

Tucker Chapman could not be reached for comment; no one answered the telephone at a Honolulu number listed under his name.

The National Enquirer on Wednesday posted on its Web site a clip of a conversation in which Duane Chapman, star of the hit A&E series "Dog the Bounty Hunter," repeatedly used the N-word in reference to Tucker's girlfriend.

Spider bite no excuse for rape, court says

SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian man who kidnapped and raped a woman blamed his actions on a spider, local media reported on Thursday.

Philip Spiers pleaded guilty to the kidnap and rape, but told a court that the poison from a funnel-web spider bite had left him with a viral illness which led to his actions.

But a toxicologist told the New South Wales state District Court there was no medical evidence to suggest a spider bite could be responsible for anger and hatred.

Spiers, who kidnapped and raped the woman in 1997, was sentenced on Wednesday to eight years in jail.

Mother Plans $25M Lawsuit After Son Dies From Staph Infection

NEW YORK — The mother of a 12-year-old Brooklyn boy who died earlier this month from antibiotic resistant staph infection put the city on notice Tuesday that she planned a $25 million lawsuit.

Aileen Rivera said Kings County Hospital improperly diagnosed the illness of her son, Omar, and sent him home after treatment with allergy medicine. He died of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus two days later, on Oct. 14.

When she took him to another emergency room, at Brookdale Hospital, staff said they would do their best. Then, she said, "They tell me 'he don't make it."'

Kings County said this week that it was closely examining whether it could have done anything more to detect the infection.

"What my son go through, I don't want any kid, no mother, to go through," said Rivera.

Cardboard Cutout of Ohio Marine Keeps Family Company While He is Away

CUMBERLAND, Ohio — Now that he's back home from Iraq, an Ohio Marine is learning all about the busy social life his two-dimensional twin led during his absence.

"Flat Brett" is a small, cardboard cutout doll of Lance Cpl. Brett Davis, made by one of his mother's co-workers at Basic Systems Inc., an engineering and automation firm.

Carman Friday said she got the idea after learning that local schools were participating in the "Flat Stanley" project in which students mail around a paper doll and keep a journal of its travels. The project was sparked by a children's book with the same name.

His mother, Connie Davis, said Monday that Flat Brett is resting now, inside a photo album of his adventures that's now complete with a final picture of both Bretts together.
