Finnish court rules CSS protection used in DVDs “ineffective”

In an unanimous decision released today, Helsinki District Court ruled that Content Scrambling System (CSS) used in DVD movies is “ineffective”. The decision is the first in Europe to interpret new copyright law amendments that ban the circumvention of “effective technological measures”. The legislation is based on EU Copyright Directive from 2001. According to both Finnish copyright law and the underlying directive, only such protection measure is effective, “which achieves the protection objective.”

China cracking down on college campus porn sites

BEIJING--A Chinese campaign to clean up online pornography has reached college campuses with the Education Ministry lashing out at some school Web sites for making money from porn.

"We strongly condemn Web site hosts for making 'unlawful' money by distributing pornographic information," Vice-Minister of Education Li Weihong was quoted as saying. "Students are easily influenced and perverted by such information as they are still in their formative years and do not have a solid hold on their values."

Xinhua did not elaborate on how the college Web sites were run or what they contained.

The Ministry of Public Security and nine other government departments launched a six-month campaign in April to crack down on illegal online activities such as distributing pornographic materials and organizing cyber strip shows.

"The campaign hopes to purge the web of sexually explicit images, stories and audio and video clips," Xinhua said.

Illegal P2P network raided

In the course of a search that took in locations dotted throughout almost the whole of Germany authorities last week were able to obtain evidence relating to an illegal BitTorrent P2P network. The investigations have concentrated on a 38-year-old suspect from Oberboihingen (in the district of Esslingen in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg), who in the past had already come to the attention of the authorities. He is now strongly suspected of having illegally distributed copyright protected movies and computer games via the Internet. The investigation was launched as early as March 2007, after the German Federation against Copyright Theft (GVU) had informed the authorities of the fact that a certain computer game had been made available on the Internet prior to its official market launch

Windows Live Messenger 8.5 Leaked

Today an internal build of Windows Live Messenger 8.5 was leaked by Messenger Addictos, a Spanish site about Windows Live Messenger and related products.

The new build includes a completely new installer system (though it appears it might need some more work). Messenger itself also got a complete visual overhaul, featuring a new UI that combines the best of Windows Live and Vista. It also includes several minor new features, some of which are still undisclosed. Unfortunately support for Plug-Ins (or “Add-Ins”) has been dropped (the plugins feature never seemed to make progress in any releases).

What makes a great logo?

When it comes to seeing a logo that makes you think, “Why didn’t I think of that?”, what exactly in the design gives you that impression?

There are four critical elements that can be seen in every great logo design:

1/ It must be describable

2/ It must be memorable

3/ It must be effective without the use of colour

4/ It must be scalable i.e. effective when scaled down to an inch in size

Points 1 and 2 go hand in hand, because if you can’t describe what a logo looks like then how will you be able to remember it? Point 3 is vital because we’re a long way away from the paperless office. Think of your company letterhead arriving in an office via fax, or having been photocopied. It MUST work in black and white because the chances are that’s exactly how it will be viewed. Point number 4 is important for things such as office stationery (pens, pin badges etc.). All those little things that too often people forget about.

19 Things NOT To Do When Building a Website

I’ve compiled a small list (or rant) of some very basic and fundamental rules that all webmasters must learn and respect when developing a website that needs to make actual money. This list can also be used by companies looking to hire a web development firm or to evaluate an already deployed website project.

I’ll start off slow and easy…

1. DO NOT resize the user’s browser window, EVER. I know you can, I know you feel really cool when you put that little Javacrap on your page and like a little miracle the browser window resizes to your wishes, but NO. You see this atrocious web technique mostly with spam sites and when “designers” design websites. That is, someone in the photo/video/art industry who “also makes websites” (see #6 for more on that), but in reality has no idea how to make a successful ecommerce website.

Malaria in Russia in the 20th century

In 1946-1948 there were 1500-2000 cases of malaria per 10,000 of the population in the territories of the former USSR, including the Moscow region. Following the introduction of DDT for malaria control in 1945 the number of cases in the USSR was markedly reduced. In 1960 the Ministry of Public Health of the USSR announced the start of a campaign to eradicate malaria from the country. This was achieved mainly by administration of curative treatment to all malaria patients in order to eliminate the parasite reservoir. However, since 1966 the number of imported cases of malaria has increased and has led to renewed local transmission. Cases of local malaria now outnumber imported cases in the European Russia. During the year 2000 a total of 763 cases of malaria were registered in the Russian Federation, 47 of which were autochthonous (WHO, 2001).

A raven-haired Miss Japan, Riyo Mori, was crowned Miss Universe 2007 on Monday in a contest marked by protests, a banned dress and the withdrawal of one beauty queen on the ground the pageant degrades women.

Mori, 20, the 56th winner of the title, was given her $250,000 diamond-and-pearl crown by last year's winner, Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico, watched by a live audience of 10,000 and some 600 million television viewers worldwide.

A lifelong ballet dancer from a village near Mount Fuji, Mori wore a striking black gown with colored lapels for the final. Winning surpassed the ambition of her grandmother, who told her as a child she wanted her to be Miss Japan one day.
