Poisoned ex-Russian spy dies

Mr Litvinenko, 43, had been critically ill in intensive care at University College Hospital after suffering a heart attack on Wednesday night.

Friends of Mr Litvinenko have claimed he was poisoned because of his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin - Russia has denied this.

Scotland Yard said they were now investigating "an unexplained death".

Mr Litvinenko, a defector to Britain who was granted asylum and citizenship, was apparently poisoned on November 1.

He had been investigating the murder of Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

Cases of torture are said to be much more frequent in Chechnya

Russian security officials are regularly subjecting detainees to beatings, rape and torture, a report by Amnesty International says.

In some cases convicted prisoners were employed by officials to torture suspects, the report says.

Suspects were also regularly denied access to lawyers, it adds.

The human rights organisation accused state investigators of transferring suspects to inaccessible parts of the justice system such as prison colonies, blocking access for independent monitors and preventing publication of expert reports.

"We are hearing horrendous reports of prisoners being tortured in police detention in Russia - beatings with fists, plastic bottles full of water, books, truncheons and poles, of suffocation, the use of electroshocks and of organised rape," said UK campaign director Tim Hancock.

Convicted prisoners were allowed 24-hour access to suspects' cells, it added, saying that some victims mentioned a special room where suspects were raped.

But it did not include Chechnya, where human rights groups have accused Russian and pro-Moscow Chechen security forces of widespread abuses, or other regions of the North Caucasus.

The US space agency (Nasa) says the veteran Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft is probably lost and unrecoverable.

Nasa will use the Rover Opportunity on the surface of the Red Planet to try to speak to the 10-year-old spacecraft in the next couple of days.

However, mission officials concede they are not expecting success.

"We're still holding out some hope but we are fully prepared in our hearts that we may never be able to talk to the spacecraft again."

The rover will use a low-power UHF antenna to try to contact MGS in the next couple of days. If it gets a reply, it will relay that response to Earth.

The problem for Nasa is that its knowledge of MGS's precise orbital position has deteriorated because tracking has not been possible. As the period of silence continues, the uncertainty will grow and make detection or communication ever more difficult.

"It's anybody's guess as to where that stuck panel is pointed, but we feel there's a good chance that we're getting enough power to maintain operations," said Tom Thorpe, project manager for Mars Global Surveyor at JPL.

Mars Global Surveyor was originally launched as a $247m mission to study the planet's surface for one Martian year, roughly two Earth years. It was recently granted another two-year extension.

Mr Berlusconi is to stand trial on charges of false accounting, embezzlement and tax fraud in relation to transactions carried out by the Berlusconi family's media company Mediaset in the 1990s.

Prosecutors suspect two offshore firms controlled by a Berlusconi family holding, Fininvest, bought television and cinema rights from a US firm.

The companies, it is alleged, then sold the rights on at inflated prices to Mediaset, also controlled by Fininvest, to avoid Italian taxes and create a slush fund.

Mr Berlusconi denies any wrongdoing.

Yes. Mr Berlusconi has been tried in Italian courts in at least six cases. In all of them he was either acquitted by a court of first instance or on appeal, or, crucially, when proceedings came to a halt because too much time had elapsed between the alleged offence and the trial.

Mr Berlusconi says he is the victim of a campaign by politically biased left-wing judges.

He claims that for years they have been carrying out a systematic vendetta against him and the media empire that he and his family control, accusing him of corruption, tax cheating and fraud.

Mr Berlusconi's government passed reforms shortening the statute of limitations for fraud and downgrading most forms of false accounting from criminal offences to civil ones.

Robin Hoods in action

Three Britons dressed as Robin Hood and his Merry Men caused a small stampede in a park in New York after throwing $4,000 (£2,110) into the air.

The pranksters - from Sheffield in England - said they hoped their stunt would encourage New Yorkers to be more polite and "give something back".

However, the plan reportedly back-fired after passers-by pushed and pulled at each other to grab the free cash.

The three men, who called themselves the Modern Day Robin Hoods, entered Manhattan's Washington Square Park with a megaphone shouting: "What you are about to see will amaze you. We are mad Englishmen."

The men then threw the $4,000, made up of $1, $5,$10 and $20 notes, into the air, sparking the frenzy. Even children were reportedly stepped on, although no-one was seriously hurt.

"I got a nasty little scrape and my butt hurts from getting pushed down. I had to fight for my free money. But I got it in the end," said the 38-year-old.
