Participants in the project are helping to embroider the names of female Coalition members who have lost their lives in Iraq. A swatch of muslin fabric with the woman’s name heat-stamped on it, is sent to volunteer stitchers who then embroider over the letters of her name with embroidery floss or thread. The completed names are then returned to become part of a fabric collage and embroidered tote bag.

The tote bag is then circulated among the stitchers who contributed names and they are asked to use the bag in the course of their daily lives for a week or so before sending it on to another stitcher.

Since the larger point of the project is to make the war personal, stitchers are encouraged to record their experiences throughout their involvement. If they have a blog, they may choose to write about what it was like to make a personal connection with a soldier who lost her life.

The Mother’s Day Project will continue until the Iraq War has ended and our troops have returned home.

Two weeks after Olga Reyes danced at her wedding, her bloated and disfigured body was laid to rest in an open coffin — the victim, her husband and some experts say, of Nicaragua’s new no-exceptions ban on abortion.

Reyes, a 22-year-old law student, suffered an ectopic pregnancy. The fetus develops outside the uterus, cannot survive and causes bleeding that endangers the mother. But doctors seemed afraid to treat her because of the anti-abortion law

By the time they took action, it was too late

Nicaragua last year became one of 35 countries that ban all abortions, even to save the life of the mother, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights in New York. The ban has been strictly followed, leaving the country torn between a strong tradition of women’s rights and a growing religious conservatism.

She added that she sees hysterectomies and severe infections that leave women sterile or dead because obstetricians can’t take any action that might harm a living fetus.

AHMADINEJAD: "The freest women in the world are the women in Iran."

REALITY CHECK: Women enjoy more rights in Iran than in some other Middle Eastern countries, but far fewer than those enjoyed in the West. Women can drive, vote, own property and run for any public office except the presidency. However, they have to by law cover their hair, avoid body-hugging clothing on pain of arrest and fine by a court. The court testimony of two women is equal to that of one man and women can't get a passport for foreign travel without the permission of their father. A woman cannot divorce easily, while a man can divorce his wife whenever he wants.

Girls are considered adults at the age of 9 while boys become adults at 15. If a man and a woman are injured in an accident, the man gets double the punitive damages.

Ahmadi is one of several hundred Texans of Iranian descent who plan to hoist signs and join marches outside the United Nations as the man they call a cruel dictator, murderer and terrorist enabler attends the General Assembly.

Many Iranians and Americans alike wonder why a university would hand a megaphone to a madman who walks around proclaiming the Holocaust was myth and Israel should be wiped off the map, then requests admission to Ground Zero.

In response to questions, the Washington Post reported, Ahmadinejad told reporters after his arrival in the United States that "freedom is flowing at the highest level" in his country.

"Our people are the freest people in the world, the most aware people in the world, the most enlightened." He added when asked about Iranian women, "The freest women in the world are women in Iran."

After such statements, who would believe anything else he has to say?

Study: Women don't talk more than guys

Another stereotype — chatty gals and taciturn guys — bites the dust. Turns out, when you actually count the words, there isn't much difference between the sexes when it comes to talking.

The researchers placed microphones on 396 college students for periods ranging from two to 10 days, sampled their conversations and calculated how many words they used in the course of a day.

The score: Women, 16,215. Men, 15,669.

The difference: 546 words: "Not statistically significant," say the researchers.

They were surprised when a magazine article asserted that women use an average of 20,000 words per day compared with 7,000 for men. If there had been that big a difference, he thought, they should have noticed it.

They found that the 20,000-7,000 figures have been used in popular books and magazines for years. But they couldn't find any research supporting them.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Some women who make a habit of venting their anger may be more likely to develop blockages in the heart arteries, new research suggests.

Researchers found that women who tended to outwardly express their anger had a higher risk of artery blockages if they also had one of several other heart risk factors: older age, diabetes or high cholesterol. Other measures of hostility, like suppressed anger and hostile temperament in general, were unrelated to the risk of coronary artery disease.

It's possible that expressed anger was the most "toxic" aspect of a hostile temperament, according to the study authors, led by Dr. David S. Krantz of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Science in Bethesda, Maryland.

Only expressed anger was linked to the risk of showing objective artery blockages on an angiogram, but women who had more symptoms scored higher on all measures of anger and hostility than women with fewer symptoms.

Now, doctors are planning the first womb transplant in the United States.

A team based in Manhattan has begun screening women left barren by cancer, injuries or other problems who want a chance to bear their own children.

But the planned operation, which Del Priore and his colleagues could attempt later this year, is stirring objections among some transplant experts, fertility specialists and medical ethicists.

"I think patients deserve autonomy," said Alan DeCherney, a fertility expert.

After performing the complex surgery, doctors would wait, probably about three months, to make sure the organ is functioning. Then, an embryo created through in-vitro fertilization would be placed in the womb. If all goes well, the baby would be delivered by Caesarean section.

Carrying her two children in her arms, she fled to a nearby church where she thought she and her family would be safe. Instead of finding sanctuary, Violette and her family walked into a nightmare. "There was shooting going on, and people were falling on others and dying everywhere," Violette said. The church was under attack by a machete-wielding militia. To survive, Violette was forced to lie down in the aisle and smear blood on herself and her children. Pretending to be dead, they hid among the corpses. Afraid to move, to cry, to even breathe, they lay there for an entire week until the Rwandan army came to liberate the area. Violette estimated that there were 700 people in that church - only 20 survived.

In the chaos and violence, Violette’s husband was brutally murdered. She was left to raise their five year old son, Eric, and four year old girl, Angelique. As so many other women in Rwanda did, Violette took in an orphan who lost his family during the war.

In 2004, Violette learned about Women for Women International’s programs. She enrolled and was matched with a sponsor in the United States - a woman named Liz Hammer, a Boston mother of two. Liz pledged to provide $27 month for one year to support Violette’s trainings and education as well as give a cash allowance to help her pay for food, school fees and clothing.

Sponsor Liz Hammer, who exchanged letters with Violette during the year-long sponsorship program at Women for Women International, recently said:

Just to know a woman with kind of the strength that Violette has given me a perspective that I would not otherwise gain.

Domestic and Sexual Violence Threaten Reproductive Health

At least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or abused in some other way, usually by an intimate partner or family member, according to a new report by the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, which says domestic and sexual violence threaten family planning efforts and women’s reproductive health worldwide.

Documenting the extent of the problem, The State of World Population 2000 report says that gender-based violence constitutes a life-long threat for hundreds of millions of girls and women around the world. In South Asia, where boys are preferred by parents, the problem begins in the womb. It is estimated that over 60 million girls are missing, the result of sex-selective abortion, infanticide and neglect. So-called "honour-killings", domestic abuse, dowry-related violence, genital mutilation, rape and trafficking in women and girls are other forms of the problem.

One of the cases cited is that of a 12-year-old Jordanian girl beaten to death by her father with sticks and iron chains because she went for walks without his permission and had thus "dishonoured" the family. Every year between 25 and 50 women in Jordan are the victims of "honour" killings; in Pakistan such killings claim some 1,000 women a year.

32 % of the sexually assaults had been reported to the police; 16 % of the reports reported led to an arrest.

Proposal would allow Plan B sale to women over 18 without prescription

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government revived efforts Monday to widen access to the morning-after pill, but only to women 18 and older, issuing a surprise announcement that it was reconsidering over-the-counter sale of the emergency contraceptive almost a year after it was thought doomed.

The Food and Drug Administration notified manufacturer Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. early Monday that it wanted to meet within seven days to iron out new steps the company must take in its three-year battle to sell the pill, called Plan B, without a prescription to at least some women.

The morning-after pill is a high dose of regular birth control that, taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, can lower the risk of pregnancy by up to 89 percent.

FEATURE-Britain tackles "crime of love"-female circumcision

Ali is one of an estimated 3 million women and girls who suffer female genital mutilation (FGM) each year.

The practice, also known as female circumcision, involves removing part or all of a girl's clitoris or labia. It is often carried out by an older woman with no medical training, using anything from scissors to tin can lids and pieces of glass.

The victims have no idea what is going to happen to them and anaesthetic or antiseptic treatment is often not used.

"When they cut me, they mixed some herbs and eggs ... and poured it where they had cut and stitched me with thorns," Ali recounted.

The centuries-old practice, prevalent mostly in Africa, is now also being brought by immigrants to Western countries, like Britain.

"FGM is a huge problem in the UK," said Ensharah Ahmed, community development officer at the UK-based Foundation for Women's Health, Research and Development (Forward).

Forward estimates there are around 279,500 women living in Britain who have undergone FGM, with another 22,000 girls under 16 in danger of joining them.
