A lot of people hate the American "winner take all" system. They hate the two party system. These are the people who think we should use things like "instant runoff voting", because it gives people holding fringe opinions more of an opportunity to make a difference.

And that's why this nominating process has been so much fun: The nominally-fascist-awful-elitist Republicans (if you listen to radical Democrats) have unambiguously selected a candidate via the primary process. But the most likely result of the Democratic primary/caucus process is that no candidate will have a majority going into the convention.

winner-take-all systems can tolerate a much broader range of political speech. Proportional representation systems tend to be much more nervous and tend to implement content-based restrictions on political speech.

William Wilberforce (1759 - 1833)

Wilberforce was persuaded to lobby for the abolition of the slave trade and for 18 years he regularly introduced anti-slavery motions in parliament. The campaign was supported by many members of the Clapham Sect and other abolitionists who raised public awareness of their cause with pamphlets, books, rallies and petitions. In 1807, the slave trade was finally abolished, but this did not free those who were already slaves. It was not until 1833 that an act was passed giving freedom to all slaves in the British empire.

Wilberforce also believed in reforming greater society as well. His good works included lending his assistance to hospitals and prisons, preventing cruelty to animals and promoting positive reform in India and other colonies. He also founded what we know today as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Americans have begun to ask why the farm bill is subsidizing high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils at a time when rates of diabetes and obesity among children are soaring, or why the farm bill is underwriting factory farming (with subsidized grain) when feedlot wastes are polluting the countryside and, all too often, the meat supply. For the first time, the public health community has raised its voice in support of overturning farm policies that subsidize precisely the wrong kind of calories (added fat and added sugar), helping to make Twinkies cheaper than carrots and Coca-Cola competitive with water.

Olmert to make surprise visit to Russia

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will leave Thursday for a one-day visit to Moscow, where he is set to meet with Russian President Valdimir Putin, who returned from a visit to Tehran on Wednesday.

The surprise visit was announced Wednesday afternoon, and reporters will not be allowed to join the trip.

Putin met Wednesday with Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to senior officials in Tehran, the Russian president suggested that the Iranian halt all uranium enrichment activities in return for a removal of the sanctions imposed on the Islamic republic.

Olmert spoke to Putin last week, and apart from the Iranian issue, he and the Russian president may also discuss issues in dispute between Israel and the Palestinians ahead of the Annapolis peace conference.

On Sunday, Olmert is scheduled to travel to Paris for a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy. On Tuesday he will travel to London for a meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Iran has promised a devastating “final response” to supporters of the Jewish State on October 12, the Islamic Republic’s Quds (Jerusalem) Day.

“Supporters of the Zionist regime will receive their response during the world Quds Day's rallies,” Iranian government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said at a weekly press conference Wednesday.

"The US loses all opportunities to cooperate with regional and other world states by trying to support a regime (the Zionist regime) which is now at its weakest political and social position," Elham said. "Supporters of the Zionist regime will definitely receive the final response for their support on Quds day."

On Quds Day in 2000, Khomeini’s successor Khamenei called for Israel’s destruction, saying it is “the only way to solve the problems of the Middle East.”

AHMADINEJAD: "On a daily basis, we have tens — many, many newspapers or dozens of newspapers in our country, and the number of those newspapers that are against the government in place right now are perhaps 10 times larger than the newspapers that are pro- government."

REALITY CHECK: There are more newspapers, usually smaller in circulation, that are opposed to Ahmadinejad than those that are in favor of his administration. However, the government has closed liberal papers and Washington-based Freedom House said "the Iranian government has forcibly closed or banned more than 100 publications since 2000." Iran has also limited the access of the foreign press.

So if you're talking about immoral — like access perhaps to immoral sites, well, you would agree with me that those sites are harmful for society. Nobody can really allow access to those. But our people are the freest people in the world, the most aware people in the world, the most enlightened, so to say."

REALITY CHECK: Iranians generally have access to mainstream Web sites, including U.S. media and government sites. But according to Reporters Without Borders, Iran today filters 10 million "immoral" sites. In addition to pornographic sites, some dealing with religion and politics are targeted and since the summer of 2006, the censors have concentrated on online publications dealing with womens' rights, the group says.

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iran's foreign ministry criticized France on Monday for a blunt warning over the weekend that Europe must prepare for war if Tehran continues to flout international demands to stop producing nuclear fuel.

"We hope that such statements are superficial and do not reflect France's realistic and strategic points of view," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said Monday, according to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency.

Asked what "the worst" meant, Kouchner -- co-founder of the the Nobel Prize-winning relief agency Doctors Without Borders -- replied, "That is war, sir."

Kouchner quickly added that he does not believe war to be imminent, but that further sanctions are. He said major French companies including those in the energy sector are being told to stop any further investments in Iran.

In August, the conservative Sarkozy said a nuclear-armed Iran was "not acceptable."
