Birthday crowns

There are many people making and/or selling their own versions of felt birthday crowns; I imitated an illustration of a child wearing a crown on the cover of The Birthday Book for my design. I used plant-dyed 100% wool felt for the front, and plant-dyed wool-rayon blend felt for the lining (because the plant-dyed 100% wool pieces are not large enough for the entire lining). Using plant-dyed felt seemed very important to me for this project. Not only is it just lovely, special, earthy, and so appropriate for the spiritual significance of a birthday (a reminder of our connection to the earth, which is especially tangible in the moment of birth), but it is also thicker and stands up a bit better than a standard felt (even 100% wool) would.

Bwahaha, medical ethics and bodily integrity implications aside, this is awesome. See-Through Predator is a wolf whose teeth were removed so he wouldn't bite his prey, and whose stomach was replaced with a see-through membrane so they could be rescued again. As seen in this Discovery Plush Channel-worthy video posted by Roberto Greco.

Plush maker Lizette Greco works with Grecolaborativo [aka, her husband and their two kids] to create their plush designs. The kids do the drawings and the stories, the parents do the fabricating from reused materials

You can download the pdf's to make your own Photo Advent Calendar on 1000 Words and more detailed instructions for making it.

Do-it-yourself Harry Potter wands

One of the first shops that Harry Potter visited when Hagrid took him to Diagon Alley was Ollivanders, the wand shop to buy his most important possession, his wand. Wands can be made from a variety of materials, after all Hagrid used an old umbrella as a wand! Yours will be made from paper. But do not be deceived it will be every bit as magical as the real wands used in the film, and if you make it carefully will look just as good.

The picture below shows the basic steps of the wand making, which are:

1. Roll the paper into a thin slightly tapered tube, gluing the last third with PVA

2. Trim the thin tube to give straight ends

3. Fill each end with glue gun glue and make a glue gun pattern on the surface, carefully turning the wand as you gently squeeze the glue out of the glue gun

4. Spray the wand with spray paint or paint with decorating emulsion or acrylic base coat to seal the paper

5. Paint and distress the wand and colour features with gold or silver.
