Second, Polanski was "demonized by the press" because he raped a child, and was convicted because he pled guilty. He "feared heavy sentencing" because drugging and raping a child is generally frowned upon by the legal system.

Roman Polanski raped a child. Let's just start right there, because that's the detail that tends to get neglected when we start discussing whether it was fair for the bail-jumping director to be arrested at age 76, after 32 years in "exile" (which in this case means owning multiple homes in Europe, continuing to work as a director, marrying and fathering two children, even winning an Oscar, but never -- poor baby -- being able to return to the U.S.). Let's keep in mind that Roman Polanski gave a 13-year-old girl a Quaalude and champagne, then raped her, before we start discussing whether the victim looked older than her 13 years, or that she now says she'd rather not see him prosecuted because she can't stand the media attention

Can we take a moment to think about all that, and about the fact that Polanski pled guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, before we start talking about what a victim he is? Because that would be great, and not nearly enough people seem to be doing it.

Polanski fled to Europe to avoid a jail sentence more than three decades ago, and his celebrity supporters are jostling for a place on the airwaves to explain that what he did wasn't "really" rape.

According to this line of thinking, it doesn't count if any of the following circumstances apply: the victim knew her attacker, had been drinking or taking drugs, was wearing nice clothes or agreed to go into a house or flat with him.

Polanski was arrested on suspicion of rape, sodomy, child molestation and furnishing dangerous drugs to a minor. The charges were dropped only when the child "expressed in no uncertain terms that she wished to maintain her anonymity and avoid the further trauma" of a rape trial. Polanski agreed to plead guilty to the lesser offence of unlawful sex with a minor – statutory rape – but fled to France rather than risk facing a judge for sentencing.

Polanski is facing extradition and the prison sentence he deserves.

Polanski's friend, Swiss filmmaker Otto Weisser, was among the first to publicly run to his defense.

"He's a brilliant guy, and he made a little mistake 32 years ago.

"We stand by and await his release and his next masterwork," said Zurich Film Festival Jury President Debra Winger

The celebrated director fled the United States and settled in France to escape jail, but by the standards of those in Hollywood, the case is ancient history.

"We hope today that this latest order will be dropped," Winger said. "It is based on a three decade old case that is all but dead, except for a minor technicality."

"It is a criminal conviction of a terrible crime, but it is something that the industry is willing to look the other way on," Belloni said. "If Hollywood really gets to look at itself and judge the personal character of a lot of the artists in the community, there would be a lot of empty seats at the Oscars because a lot of people have personal problems.

I was babysitting for my mom's friend Kathleen's daughter the night I wrote that first fan letter to John Hughes.

I sent the letter and a month or so later I received a package in the mail with a form letter

I was irate.

He wrote back.

"This is not a form letter. The other one was. Sorry. Lots of requests. You know what I mean. I did sign it."

I asked him if he would be my pen pal.

He said yes.

For two years (1985-1987), John Hughes and I wrote letters back and forth.

He made me feel like what I said mattered.

He also told me he was glad I had gotten in touch and that he was proud of me for what I was doing with my life. He told me, again, how important my letters had been to him all those years ago, how he often used the argument "I'm doing this for Alison" to justify decisions in meetings.

Thank you, John Hughes. I love you for what you did to make me who I am.

How much do you want to surrender America to the corporations?

Think about this carefully. This writers strike affects you. Wherever you are, whatever you do, this is going to affect you.

In fact, the corporations are pretty much counting on you not realizing this is about you.

12 thousand+ people are on strike.

This strike is going to cost hundreds of millions of dollars, it's going to affect the economy. If thousands of people are out of work in one of the major US cities, the domino effect is going to start: the mortgage woes that are already bad? Going to get worse. More bankruptcies, more lenders losing money, more ripple effects outward. This will hit Wall Street, which will in turn touch the rest of the economy. And yet, this is not being discussed on your nightly news.

Your country is changing, right in front of your eyes. This is a chance to do something about it.

The take-home lesson, in case you need to explain to a friend who blames “greedy writers” for why The Daily Show is in repeats:

Writers get royalties: for books, for songs, for literary works.
For legal reasons, studios want to be considered the “author” of a movie. So screenwriters transfer “authorship” to the studios, in exchange for a bunch of rights, and residuals.
The studios and the WGA disagree about what rate is fair for work distributed over the internet.
Since internet distribution will eventually replace DVDs, a bad rate would result in a pay cut for writers.
That’s why there’s a strike.

I'm a strike captain.
I'm a gate coordinator for CBS Radford.

CBS Radford has news writers who are currently working without a contract. They are working inside the lot, and are not protected under our strike until the 15th, but they are allowed to come out and walk with us whenever they can. Until:

The security guard pulled me aside. "You've got guys in your line trying to break the strike and go back to work."

"No, those are news writers," I said. "They're supposed to be at work. They're supporting us."

He said, "I'm sorry, but once someone walks the line, I've been told I'm not allowed to let them back into the lot."

I said he must be mistaken, but I'd resolve it at the main gate

"They're only coming out here to support us," Don said. "He's not on strike. I'm on strike. And if you're telling me I can't go in there, then you're saying that CBS has issued a lockout. And that's very different.
