clipper's remarks: This is the current cover of GQ magazine on the racks now. Yesterday at Target, I was looking at DVDs with my 5-year-old daughter. The magazine racks were by the movies and I heard my daughter say "Mommy, look at this naked man!"

I turn around and see this cover. Is this an appropriate cover in a store where children are often shopping?

If it was a picture of the statue David, I wouldn't have cared, but his bothered me. Is it art? Should this issue have had a wrapper or should Target have put it behind other magazines to reduce the amount of exposed cover?

Would it have mattered if it was a woman? I think it might have bothered me more.

Apart from the extreme violence, is the zombie genre fundamentally liberal or conservative? Does its increasing popularity serve anyone's political ends?

While one can certainly use zombies to express all kinds of ideas, I would argue that at heart, the genre is a progressive one. It's true that fighting off the zombie horde requires plentiful firearms, no doubt pleasing Second Amendment advocates. And in a zombie movie, government tends to be either ineffectual or completely absent. On the other hand, when the zombie apocalypse comes, capitalism breaks down, too -- people aren't going to be exchanging money for goods and services; they're just going to break into the hardware store and grab what they need

But most important, what ensures survival in a zombie story are the progressive ideals of common cause and collective action.

Because of their catatonic state, zombies have been unable to offer any personal testimony to augment scientific research. Therefore, all we know about zombies is based upon empirical evidence. A person infected with the zombie virus is transformed into a single-minded hunting machine, with all changes to bodily functions serving the zombie imperative: locate prey, capture prey and feed. Overall, the changes that take place in zombies are more limited than in vampires, and primarily affect the nervous system and the muscular/skeletal system.

A zombie's powerful sense of smell compensates for the weakness of their other senses.

Sight: due to degradation of their corneas, zombies suffer from severe myopia. In addition, they are colorblind.

Hearing: zombies go deaf within a few weeks of transformation.

Smell: zombies have even more receptor cells than vampires. If the wind is right, zombies can smell humans from as far as several miles away.

In Night of the Living Dead, zombies are brought back from the dead by a "mysterious force" that allows their brains to continue functioning. But how exactly does a zombie brain function? Finally, a Harvard psychiatrist has the answers.

Schlozman concludes that zombies possess just enough frontal lobe activity to "listen" to the thalamus, through which sensory input is processed.

Absent a properly functioning frontal lobe, a zombie is driven entirely by base emotions - such as rage - that are housed in the primitive parts of our brain, notably the amygdala.

A zombie would have a dysfunctional anterior cingulate cortex, rendering it unable to modulate feelings of anger. The result? Hyper-aggression.

Clearly, zombies suffer from cerebellar and basal ganglia dysfunction (duh!). Those are the parts of the brain that make fluidity of motion possible.

It's not too complicated. You don't need military training, and you don't have to know martial arts (though those would help). All you need is a quick wit, an uncompromising will to survive and a few essential accessories. Consider this to be your checklist.

A CAR

Yes, that's right. Don't stick around and fight. Find a car, start the engine and burn rubber.

SHOTGUN

This is probably your most effective weapon.

TWO HANDGUNS

Yes, two. One for each hand,

CHAINSAW

This is a good back-up weapon if you lose your firearms. It calls for close contact, but the damage inflicted on your target can be pretty extreme.

SWORD

DYNAMITE

t toss it as far from you as possible and hope for the best.

PAINT

This is essential for creating large signs on rooftops for the rescue helicopters that will probably never come.

MESSAGE BOARD/BINOCULARS

Suppose that in 2010 there is a major zombie apocalypse. Inexplicably, corpses all over the world reanimate and hunt the human race in search of fresh brains. Now, assume that after years of struggle, the human race prevails and the zombies have been contained on the island formerly known as New Zealand. What now? What happens after the great zombie wars?

Despite all the carnage, death and economic declines that would follow from a zombie apocalypse, the nations of the world could still benefit by integrating the remaining zombies into their economic and social infrastructures.

Zombies represent a source of cheap labor and a particularly lucrative source being that they are infinitely undead. They don’t require any upkeep—no food to survive assuming the government has found a way to curb their hunger, no wages, no health care, no benefits, etc.

How do you spread the love?

So, then, how do you spread love, then?

When you see an opportunity, pay a stranger a compliment. It’s tiny, but effective.

Reward someone for their own good deeds. If someone you know spends alot of time giving to others, tell them that you recognize their generosity. Even better, take them for dinner or buy them a card.

On the flipside, if someone is nasty and selfish, point out that these aren’t great attitudes. Approach them with compassion, though. Nastiness and selfishness are often products of not getting enough love. You may have to show this person the way.

Tell the people who you care about that you love them. It sounds basic, but many people forget.

Practice empathy. Everyone has a different point of view. Even if that P.O.V. is something you think is totally backwards and idiotic, put yourselves in their shoes to try and understand where s/he is coming from. You’ll also do better in debates.

The Spread Love Project is firmly rooted in the first, Be Nice, because in the world of community, nice guys (and gals) DO finish first.

Being Nice just means that you act positively towards others. Some ways you can be nice are:

Help someone out when they need it
Make someone feel good about themselves
Use some of your social capital (wisely) to help someone else raise their own
Donate your time, money and/or expertise to a community project
Listen to others
Let others lead

Being nice doesn’t mean that you have to be a patsy, though. You can be strong and opinionated and nice all at once.
